This paper describes analysis of long-term experiments on a monitoring system to assess the daily activities of the elderly who live alone. The developed system is composed of an in-house sensing system and a server system. The in-house sensing system installed in their own houses is a typical wireless sensor network system including three kinds of wireless sensors. The server system has a database server and an assessment server. We have installed the system into an elderly house, collected data during over two years continuously, then analyze the data. From the analysis, we could measure the energy consumption profile of three kinds of sensor nodes. The experiment shows all kinds of nodes can operate over one year with two AA-size alkaline batteries. Using a measure of reliability of the monitoring system called 'deadzone', the system has showed the failure operation for 842 hours (4.66 %) during over 18,000 hours total operation period.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the validity of a depth camera-based system for monitoring physical function, assessing its feasibility for accurately monitoring activities of daily living. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-three participants were enlisted to perform fifteen activities of daily living within a living laboratory designed to simulate a home environment. Activities were monitored using a depth camera system capable of classifying actions into standing, sitting, and lying down, with a conventional video camera employed for activity recording. The duration of each activity, as measured by the system, was compared to direct observations made by a physical therapist which were analyzed using a motion analysis software. The association between these two measurement approaches was assessed through correlation analysis, coefficient of determination, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots. Results: Our findings indicated that standing activities exhibited the highest correlation (r=0.847) between the system measurements and physical therapist observations, followed by sitting (r=0.817) and lying down (r=0.734), which demonstrated lower correlations. However, the ICC and Bland-Altman plots revealed notable variances between the two measurement methods, particularly for activities involving lying down. Conclusions: In this study, the depth camera-based physical monitoring system showed promise feasibility in distinguishing standing, sitting, and lying down activities at home environments. However, the current study also underlined some necessities of enhancements in capturing lying down activities.

In this study, a method for estimating the amount of urination for men, was suggested and its performance was evaluated. This study is a preliminary one for the development of a health monitoring system that needs un-constraining, non-intrusive and long-term measurements in daily life. To estimate the amount of urination, a wide weighing plate with load cell was built and the difference in a man's weights between before and after urination was measured while he was standing on the plate. The results showed that the amount of urination can be estimated with the measured weight difference under the condition of mild movements. The largest measurement error of the suggested method was 40g, which means that this method can be applied to health monitoring in daily life. It is expected that the results of this study will be the basis for developing practical un-constraining and non-intrusive health monitoring system for daily use at home.
In addition to structural stabilization measures such as the construction of Sand Dam, non-structural management measures such as reasonable water demand and supply volume management are needed to prevent limited water supply damage due to drought. In this study, water supply-demand monitoring system was established for drought response in Seosang-ri basin in Chuncheon, the main source of domestic water for small water facilities. The flow rate of the stream was measured for monitoring the supply volume, and the daily flow rate was calculated by using it to calibrate the parameters of the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool). To monitor demand, the daily usage was calculated by measuring the change in the water level of the water tank. The relationship between the finally calculated daily supply and demand amount was analyzed to identify the shortage of water.

In our daily life, quality of sleeping is closely related to happiness index. Whether or not people perceive sleep disturbance as a chronic disease, people complain of many difficulties, and in their daily life, they often experience difficulty breathing during sleep. It is very important to automatically recognize breathing-related disorders during a sleep, but it is very difficult in reality. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a mobile-based non-contact sleeping monitoring for health management at home. Respiratory signals during the sleep are collected by using the sound sensor of the smartphone, the characteristics of the signals are extracted, and the frequency, amplitude, respiration rate, and pattern of respiration are analyzed. Although mobile health does not solve all problems, it aims at early detection and continuous management of individual health conditions, and shows the possibility of monitoring physiological data such as respiration during the sleep without additional sensors with a smartphone in the bedroom of an ordinary home.

One-hour average concentrations of ground-level ozone from around 80 monitoring stations in Korea during 1991 to 1993 were analyzed to examine characteristics of the ozone concentration variations. Two types of variations were observed: one was for the Capital area typified by Kwanghwmun, and the other was for the south and east seashore region typified by Tongkwangyang. In the Capital area including Seoul, Inchon, Kyonggi-do and Chunchon, mean daily 1-hout maximum was the highest in June following high monthly averages in spring. But frequent precipitation prevented further rise of daily maximum in July and August even though there were frequent episodes of high concentration exceeding 100ppb. In the south and east seashore region, average concentration was the highest throughout the year, and daily maximum and minimum simultaneously changed owing to small contributions from photochemical reactions. The typical annual variation was spring peak, summer down, and fall rise. Spring peak accompanied an usual observations of background variations at remote sites in the Northern Hemisphere. Riess of average and daily maximum with lower daily minimum in fall were attributable to photochemical reactions.

In this study, we implemented an unconstraint ECG monitoring system on a chair. Nowadays, modern people spend most of their time sitting on the chair. Therefore, it is necessary to have an unconstraint ECG monitoring system that can be used for a long time. The implemented system can perform measurement even with clothes on and it has great advantage on motion artifacts. A pair of unconstraint electrodes are placed on the back of the chair. Amplifier and filters are designed to remove motion artifacts, The baseline noise and power line noise are filtered and very low level of bio-signal is amplified to give a final measurement. Control unit and wireless transmission unit are implemented. Analog signal is converted into digital signal and transmits biological signal to the PC and the smart phone. Therefore continuous ECG monitoring in daily life is made possible. A comparison experiment between Ag / AgCl electrode and unconstraint electrode is conducted to evaluate the performance of the implemented system. As a result, we confirm our unconstraint system can be used for daily life ECG monitoring.
Rapid strides are being made to bring to reality the technology of wearable sensors for monitoring patients' physiological data.We study the problem of automatically detecting anomalies in themeasured blood glucose levels. The normal daily measurements of the patient are used to train a hidden Markov model (HMM). The structure of the HMM-its states and output symbols-are selected to accurately model the typical transitions in blood glucose levels throughout a 24-hour period. The learning of the HMM is done using historic data of normal measurements. The HMM can then be used to detect anomalies in blood glucose levels being measured, if the inferred likelihood of the observed data is low in the world described by the HMM. Our simulation results show that our technique is accurate in detecting anomalies in glucose levels and is robust (i.e., no false positives) in the presence of reasonable changes in the patient's daily routine.
This study was intended to help children to cultivate and develop a sound attitude toward food consumption and eating habits through the analysis of food and nutritional information in news articles and advertisements in three major daily children's newspapers in Korea: The Chosen Children's Daily Newspaper, The Hankook Children's Daily Newspaper, and The Donga Children's Daily Newspaper. The monitoring period was for twelve months, January to December 2003. Two hundred seventy-nine articles and three hundred thirty-five advertisements were analyzed. The results were as follows. 'Cooking and health' were the most frequent subject in food and nutrition articles. The articles' contents are evaluated positively in morality and explanation; but negatively in fairness, specialization, and objectiveness. The articles were insufficient in the explanation of professional terms, scientific bases, and practical measures for real life. It therefore seems that they were difficult for children to understand well. The most frequent themes in the advertisements were 'processed fats and sugars' such as chocolate, candies, and cookies. Frequently, they were exaggerated and accompanied by phrases promoting consumption. They did not provide sufficient well-grounded information, and focused too much on events or gifts to instigate consumer sentiment. In conclusion, the most serious problem was that most food and nutrition information in these children's newspapers was lacking in specialization. More specialized and objective information should be provided in order to enhance the educational value of children's newspapers and their utilization in school education programs. Continuous monitoring should be carried out to discover those news articles and advertisements that contain correct food and nutrition information.
Recently, according to change of lifestyle and increase of concerning in health, needs of the smart clothing based on the vital sign monitoring have increased. Along with this trend, smart clothing for ECG monitoring has been studied various way as textile electrode, clothing design and so on. Smart clothing for ECG monitoring can become a comfortable system which enables continuous vital sign monitoring in daily use. But, smart clothing for ECG monitoring has a weakness on artifact during motion. One of the motion artifact caused by shifting of the electrode position was affected skin change by motion. The aim of this study was to suggest electrode locations for clothing of ECG monitoring to reduce of motion artifacts. Therefore, change of skin surface during the movement were measured and analyzed in order to find location to minimize motion artifacts in ECG monitoring clothing by 3D motion capture. For the experiment, the subjects consisted of 5 males and 5 females in their 20' with average physique. As a result, the optimal location for ECG monitoring was deducted under the bust line and scapula which have least motion artifact. These locations were abstracted to be least affected by movement in this research.
