  • The content analysis of fatty acids in Perilla cultivars and commercial oils is conducted through gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. Results show that Perilla cultivars, such as Deulsaem and Daesil, contain high amounts of ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid (262.22 and 261.97 mg/g, respectively). Among commercial oils, Perilla oil contains a higher amount of ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid (515.20 mg/g). Accordingly, ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid is a major fatty acid of Perilla cultivars and oil. Therefore, Perilla cultivars could be used as a food supplement for nutritional and pharmaceutical purposes.

  • This study was conducted to obtain basal information for the development of perilla cultivars with improved quality. The F7 population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross between the parents of Daesil for seeds and Ipdeulkkae1 for vegetables was used as the material. We evaluated several agricultural characteristics and seed quality. Variations were observed in most of the measurements; for example, stem length (ranging from 66.0 to 150.0 cm), number of branches (from 5 to 23), flower cluster length (ranging from 5.1 to 10.5 cm), number of flower clusters (from 17 to 131), a-linolenic acid content (from 54.2 to 64.1%), and functional compound content (rosmarinic acid 869.5~3,508.1 ㎍/g; luteolin 47.4~864.3 ㎍/g; apigenin 57.1~296.7 ㎍/g) all showed variation. Significant correlations between stem length and the number of branches (0.561) and number of branches versus number of flower clusters (0.638) were detected in the RIL F7 population. Most agricultural characteristics and seed qualities showed a normal distribution with large variation, and transgressive segregation was observed in many descendants with characteristics to those of their parents. Daesil/Ipdeulkkae1 RIL F7 populations could be useful for future QTL analysis as well as for intermediate breeding lines for high-quality perilla cultivars.

  • Perilla seed oil is considered to be a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and phenolic compounds, which have various health benefits. To improve its oil content and nutritional quality, 29 varieties of perilla have been bred, but their nutritional qualities, including the fatty acid and phenolic compound contents, have not been investigated. Therefore, in this study, the seed metabolite profiles, including the fatty acids, of these 29 perilla varieties were analyzed. Palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, rosmarinyl glucoside, and rosmarinic acid were identified as the major metabolites of perilla. The fatty acid contents were higher in the Okdong, Deulsaem, Daesil, Joim, Yeupsil, Danjo, and Joongmo5103 varieties (in order). However, the total phenolic compounds and antioxidative activities of Okdong and Deulsaem were relatively low, whereas the fatty acid and total phenol contents of Joim, Yeupsil, and Danjo were relatively high. These results may be useful for comparing the nutritional quality of the 29 perilla varieties.

  • Contact-type Linear Encoder-like Capacitive Displacement Sensor (CLECDiS) is a novel displacement sensor which has wide measurable range with high resolution. The sensor, however, is very sensitive to relative rotational alignment between stator and mover of the sensor as well as its displacement. In addition to, there can be some disturbances in the relative rotational alignment, so some noises occur in the sensor's output signal by the disturbances. This negative effect of the high sensitivity may become larger as increasing sensitivity. Therefore, this negative effect of the high sensitivity has to be compensated and reduced to achieve nanometer resolution of the sensor. In this study, a new type capacitive linear encoder with a mechanical guide is presented to reduce the relative rotational alignment problem. The presented method is not only to reduce the alignment problem, but also to assemble the sensor to the stage conveniently. The method is based on a new type CLECDiS that has mechanical guide autonomously. In the presented sensor, when the device is fabricated by micro-machining, the guide-rail is also fabricated on the surface of the sensor. By the direct fabrication of the guide-rail with high precision micro-machining, errors of the guide-rail can be reduced significantly. In addition, a manual yaw alignment is not required to obtain large magnitude of the output signal after the assembly of the sensor and the stage. The sensor movement is going to follow the guide-rail automatically. The prototype sensor was fabricated using the presented method, and we verify the feasibility experimentally.
