A six year-old male Maltese dog was presented to the Konkuk University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (KUVTH) with mass in right scapula region. Physical examination, radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), complete blood count (CBC), serum biochemistry, cytological analysis of fine needle aspiration and histopathological examination were performed. There was no remarkable finding in CBC. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was found to be increased in serum chemistry profile. Osteolysis was seen on radiographs of the scapula. MRI revealed mixed signal intensity in scapula. Cytological examination of fine-needle aspirate (FNA) was suggestive of sarcoma. We confirmed that the neoplastic cells were fibrosarcoma by immunohistochemical and Masson's trichrome staining.
A 5-years-old female pointer dog was submittedto the hospital with the disease history of gradual distension of abdomen and emaciation for two months. An applesized hard mass was palpated on the right costal arch on physical examination. On blood chemical analysis, the marked elevation of SALT and decrease in serum albumin were detected. On paracentesis, a large volume of blood tinged fluid was detected. The peritoneal fluid contained tumor cells and the numerous blood cells. At autopsy the tumor mass located in the left medial lobe of liver was whitish and firm, and was consisted of many cysts. Histologically the tumor was identified as typical cholangiocellular carcinoma. Metastatic lesions of the tumor were detected in the lung, stomach, spleen, diaphragm, and lymph glands. This observation indicates that the cytological examination of the abdominal fluid have a diagnostic significance in the clinical examination of patients with abdominal tumors.

The diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer is generally based on the findings of intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions and nuclear grooves. Although anisokaryosis and poikilokaryosis, in papillary thyroid cancer, are not distinct when compared to other cancers, cytological examination can provide useful preoperative information. Our study evaluated the diagnostic role of computer-assisted image analysis for the pre-surgical assessment of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Thyroid aspirates from twenty female patients who were histologically confirmed to have both papillary carcinoma and benign nodules were studied. Different populations of 50 benign cells and 50 malignant cells were analyzed. Five morphometric parameters were selected for analysis: nuclear area, perimeter, maximum length, maximum width and intensity standard variation. The values obtained for papillary carcinomas were higher than the surrounding benign nodules as follows: nuclear area 63.5 vs. 36.1 (p=0.000), nuclear perimeter were 29.4 vs. 22.0 (p=0.000), maximum length 9.6 vs. 7.1 (p=0.000), maximum width 8.2 vs. 6.3 (p=0.000), the ratio between maximal length and maximal width 1.16 vs. 1.13 (p=0.000), the standard variation of intensity 14.9 vs. 15.9 (p=0.101) respectively. Therefore, morphometric information can be helpful for the differential cytological diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma.

An 8-year-old, castrated male Shih-tzu was referred due to relapsing pododermatitis and generalized pruritus. On physical examination, right forepaw showed swelling and serosanguinous exudates from sinus tract on dorsal paw. There were no remarkable findings on complete blood count (CBC), serum chemistry, and radiologic examination. On cytological examination of exudates from sinus tract, phagocyted bacteria and numerous degenerative neutrophils were noted. Results of deep skin scraping and plucking hair examination were unremarkable. Skin biopsy was performed and ruled out other skin diseases. Histopathology showed epidermal hyperplasia and diffuse mononuclear cell inflammation in dermal layer. Moreover, pyogranulomatous inflammation was demonstrated in subcutaneous layer. This case was clinically diagnosed as pododermatitis secondary to atopic dermatitis (AD). Clinical signs of pododermatitis were gradually improved following topical application of tacrolimus 0.1% ointment. This case report describes that tacrolimus ointment can be applicable for the treatment of refractory pododermatitis.
This study aimed to screen for anal cancer and to determine its cytomorphology using liquid-based cytology (LBC) with specimens preserved in 95% ethyl alcohol. Anal swabs were collected for cytological examination from 177 adult, HIV-infected patients. After collection, sample slides were reviewed and classified according to their cytomorphology using the modified Bethesda 2001 system. An abnormal anal Pap smear was found in 26.0% of the patients. The diagnoses were: 66.7% negative for intraepithelial lesions (NIL), 14.1% with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US), 10.7% (19) with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), and 1.13% with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). The cytological evaluation was an unsatisfactory result only with 6.67%. The present modified LBC using 95% ethyl alcohol as the preservative could thus be used for anal cancer screening. The number of SILs in Thai HIV-infected patients is lower than that in Western countries. We found anal cytology a satisfactory tool for early screening and detection of anal dysplasia commonly found in high-risk, HIV-infected patients.
A nine-year-old female Yorkshire terrier dog showing mammary secretion mixed with blood and pus for 5 month duration was presented. Cytologically mammary secretion consisted of many pleomorphic tumor cells, RBC, and neutrophil. Tumor cells were characterized by polyhedral pleomorphic nuclei with smudged chromatin and basophilic cytoplasm with many secretory vacuoles. N/C ratio was very high. Therefore it was diagnosed as mammary gland adenocarcinoma. Histological examination confirmed cytological diagnosis. From these results cytology isfor the diagnosis of secreting mammary gland adenocarcinoma is very simple and accurate for the diagnosis of secreting mammary gland adenocarcinoma.
Cytologic diagnosis of the metastatic tumors to the thyroid is important in the management of the patients. There have been rare reports analyzing fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of metastatic tumors to the thyroid. This study examines comprehensive cytologic findings of metastatic tumors to the thyroid with radiologic findings. The FNA cytology slides obtained from 12 cases with metastatic tumors of the thyroid; lung cancer (n=5), tongue and tonsil cancer (n=3), esophageal cancer (n=2), and breast cancer (n=2) were reviewed. Radiological study showed single mass with heterogeneous texture or multiple masses without calcification. Metastatic tumor was easily considered in a differential diagnosis of FNA cytology because they had peculiar cytological features which were not seen in primary thyroid tumor. The smear background varied from predominantly necrotic, bloody, and inflammatory to colloid. The aspirates exhibited a mixture of benign follicular cells and malignant cells in 6 cases. The characteristic cytoplasmic features of the tumor cells, such as keratin, mucin and melanin, were found in 9 cases. Although some cases mimic primary thyroid neoplasm, a careful examination of the cytological characteristics may help cytopathologists to recognize a metastatic tumor in the thyroid by FNA, and may help the clinicians to establish a proper treatment plan.
Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytological examination is an appropriate method for the evaluation of pulmonary nodules. In major types of lung cancer, Its diagnostic accuracy is quite high. However, it is sometimes difficult, using this technique, to differentiate between some unusual phenotypes including adenosquamous carcinoma, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC), neuroendocrine tumor, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and sclerosing hemangioma. Here, we present a case involving extremely well differentiated adenosquamous carcinoma, mimicking benign lesions, such as pulmonary scar and adenomatoid malformation with squamous metaplasia. The patient was a 68-year-old man presenting with a solitary pulmonary nodule$(1.6\times1.6cm)$, which was incidentally found at the periphery of the right lower lobe. FNA revealed some clusters of glandular cells with minimal atypia, in addition to squamous cells at a nearly full maturational state. Histological examination verified the cytological diagnosis on a lobectomy specimen. The tumor exhibited a well differentiated adenocarcinoma component, mimicking the bronchioles in scarred lung tissue. and a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma component, mimucking the squamous cell nests of adenoacanthoma, in the other organs. In the present case, the possibility of adenosquamous carcinoma should have been considered if squamous cells were seen in the FNA from the peripheral pulmonary nodule, even though they appeared to be benign.
To determine the pattern of disease in patients presenting with breast lumps and to determine the sensitivity and specificity of fine needle aspiration cytology of benign and malignant diseases as a diagnostic tool by correlating with histopathology findings. This retrospective study was carried out in the Department of Pathology, Maharaja Agrasen Medical College, Agroha, from Jan 2008 to April 2012. Fine needle aspiration cytology was performed on 370 cases and out of these 52 cases were received in the Department for histopathological examination. Fibroadenoma was the most common disease encountered, in 88 (24%), with a peak incidence in second and third decade of life. Fibrocystic disease was second, being common in the third and fourth decades of life. Peak incidences of duct ectasia, granulomatous and tubercular mastitis were seen in the third decade. Gynaecomastia showed two peak incidences in second and sixth decades of life. Out of total 370 cases undergoing fine needle aspiration, benign cases were 316 (85.4%), malignant and suspicious were 54 (14.6%) and 10 (2.70%) respectively. Out of total 22 histological confirmed malignant lesions 19 were interpreted as malignant cytologically while two as suspicious and one as benign. All thirty histologically confirmed benign cases were diagnosed as benign cytologically. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were 98%, 100%, 100% and 96.4% respectively. FNA cytology is highly accurate for diagnosis of breast masses. However, the clinician should correlate FNA cytological results with physical examination and imaging findings to prevent false negative and false positive events and to obtain optimal management of their patients.
Background: To estimate the pre-vaccination distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) types among women from urban Tunis. Materials and Methods: A total of 611 women aged 18-69 years were enrolled in three local gynaecological outpatient departments. All underwent a gynaecological examination with Pap test and dry swab for HPV detection and typing performed by linear array genotyping test (Roche). Cytological examination was conducted on conventional Pap smears. Results: HPV DNA was found in 6.5% of the women; the most frequent HPV types were HPV 16 and HPV 11 at 3.27% and 1.96%, respectively. The second most frequent high risk (HR) HPV type was HPV 58 (0.82%) followed by HPV 18, HPV 31 and HPV 33 found in only 0.33% of women. Single infections with HPV types, targeted by the quadrivalent vaccine (6, 11, 16, and 18), were detected in 3.6 % of the study patients (55% of positive women). HPV infection was found in 3.83% of women with normal cytology and in 47.4% of women with cytological abnormalities. No statistically significant trend in prevalence by age group emerged for any HPV type or for high or low risk types. Conclusions: These data show a relatively low prevalence of HPV infection in women from urban Tunis with a high proportion of HPV16 and HPV58. This should be considered in the upcoming screening programs and vaccination strategy.
