Three Feather Mites (Acari: Sarcoptiformes) Isolated from Black-Tailed Godwit, Limosa limosa in Korea

  • Feather mites comprise two superfamilies(Analgoidea and Pterolichoidea) and are highly specialized ectosymbionts of birds. To date, this group contains more than 2,500 species worldwide. Fifty-five feather mite species have been reported in Korea, and only one species of genus Alloptes has been recorded from black-tailed godwit Limosa limosa. Three new records of feather mites from the L. limosa in Korea are added in this study: Avenzoaria punctata Gaud, 1972, Bregetovia limosae (Buchholz, 1869), and Montchadskiana buchholzi (Canestrini, 1878). The genus Bregetovia Dubinin, 1951 is also new report for this country. In this paper, we provide the morphological descriptions and illustrations based on the present specimens. Additionally, we determined partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) from three feather mites as DNA barcodes.

First Record of the Brackish Water Amphipod Jesogammarus (Jesogammarus) hinumensis (Amphipoda: Anisogammaridae) from Korea with DNA Barcode Analysis among Jesogammarus Species

  • Jesogammarus (Jesogammarus) hinumensis Morino, 1993 was discovered firstly from a brackish water region in Jeju Island, Korea. To identification of the specimens we conducted both of morphological and molecular analyses. This species is characterized by having large eyes and a robust seta on the mandibular palp article 1. The morphology of this Korean specimens was well matched with the original description without variation. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) sequences of the present specimens were also completely identical to the sequences of J. (J.) hinumensis collected from the type locality of the species. Thus, we concluded that the Jesogammarus species from Jeju Island is J.(J.) hinumensis, based on both morphological and molecular data.

DNA Barcoding of Nereiphylla hera (Annelida: Polychaeta: Phyllodocidae) from South Korea

  • The phyllodicd polychaete species, Nereiphylla hera Kato and Mawatari, 1999 is reported from the intertidal habitats of the eastern coast of South Korea. We determined the DNA barcoding region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of N. hera and compared nucleotide variation with its congeners. The intra-specific genetic distance between the three COI sequences of N. hera was ranged from 0 to 0.4%. The inter-specific distances between N. hera and other Nereiphylla species ranged from 18.8 to 22.3%. In this study, we reported the first COI barcodes of N. hera with the morphologcial diagnosis and the photographs. These results would be helpful to understand taxonomy of Nereiphylla.

Four Unrecorded Species of Genus Alloptes (Acari: Sarcoptiformes: Alloptidae) from Charadriiform Birds in South Korea

  • Four feather mites, Alloptes(Apodalloptes) orthogramme Gaud and Mouchet, 1957, Alloptes(Conuralloptes) limosae Dubinin, 1951, Alloptes (C.) procerus Gaud, 1972 and Alloptes (Sternalloptes) fauri Gaud, 1957 are reported for the first time in South Korea. These specimens were collected from four charadriiform bird species: Actitis hypoleucos, Larus crassirostris, Limosa limosa, and Numenius phaeopus. The family Alloptidae Gaud, 1957 and a genus Alloptes Canestrini, 1879 are newly added to the invertebrate fauna of South Korea as well. Here, we provide the morphological description and illustrations based on the present specimens. Additionally, partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) were newly-generated for using as DNA barcodes.

A New Record of the Brittle Star, Amphistigma minuta (Ophiuroidea: Amphilepidida: Amphiuridae), from Jeju Island, Korea

  • The brittle star, Amphistigma minuta H.L. Clark, 1938, was collected from Munseom Island, Jeju-do, Korea, by SCUBA diving. This species has distinct morphological features, as follows: a small disk with large papillae on the disk margin; slender arms and four arm spines at proximal; and oral parts the same as those of the genus Amphipholis. Additionally, we obtained partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) (513 bp) and compared them with sequences from Australian A. minuta and 13 other species of Amphiuridae. As a result, intraspecific pairwise distance was 0.4% between two Korean individuals and intraspecific distance between the Australian and the Korean populations was 2.6-2.8%, which indicates they should be considered as the same species. Ultimately, 15 species of the family Amphiuridae have currently been recorded in Korea, including A. minuta.

Philodina wonkimi n. sp. and Five New Records of Bdelloids from Korea

  • A taxonomic study on bdelloid rotifers collected from mosses and/or leaf litter at four different locations in Korea resulted in five new Korean records and a new species, Philodina wonkimi n. sp. Philodina wonkimi n. sp. is easily distinguished from its congeners by the very long antenna which is much longer than the height of the pseudosegment carrying a dorsal antenna in creeping. Among the five new Korean records, two species- and two subspecies-level taxa are new to Asia as well. Adineta rhomboidea Bērzinš, 1950 has been reported from only three European countries including the type locality, and is recorded outside Europe for the first time. Present study is the fourth record for Philodina eurystephana Schulte, 1954. In addition, a partial sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (mtCOX1) for P. wonkimi n. sp. is provided here.

  • The Antarctic freshwater copepod, Boeckella poppei (Mrazek, 1901), has the widest range of distribution extending from southern South America to Antarctic continent, among all Boeckella species. Boeckella poppei is the only freshwater copepod known to be inhabiting the Antarctic continent. In present study, we analyzed the DNA barcodes of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of B. poppei from King George Island, Antarctica. The intraspecific genetic distances varied from 0% to 13% and interspecific genetic distances ranged from 11% to 14%. The overlap of DNA barcode gap suggests careful threshold-based delimitation of species boundaries.

The First Record of the Marphysa victori (Polychaeta, Eunicida, Eunicidae) from Korea, with DNA Barcode Data

  • A eunicid polychaete, Marphysa victori Lavesque, Daffe, Bonifácio & Hutchings, 2017 is described for the first time from the intertidal zones of the Korean coasts. It is characterized by having three types of pectinate chaetae (INS, isodont-narrow-slender; AWS, anodont-wide-slender; and AWT, anodont-wide-thick), appearance of pectinate chaetae from chaetiger 2, the chaetae consisted of pectinate and compound spinigers, and pygidium with one pair of pygidial cirri. In genetic analysis based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), intra-specific genetic distance between the specimens of M. victori from its type locality, France and Korea are in the range of 0.000-0.013. This paper includes the morphological description and photographs of M. victori new to Korean fauna, with partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI as DNA barcode data on this species.

DNA Barcoding of Rocinela niponia (Isopoda, Cymothooidea, Aegidae) from South Korea

  • An aegid species, Rocinela niponia Richardson, 1909, is a Far Eastern species known from Korean and Japanese waters. In this study, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of R. niponia were determined based on four specimens collected from the subtidal zone of Chujado Island, South Korea. We compared DNA barcoding data of this species with its congeners. As a result, there was no intra-specific genetic distance between the four COI sequences of R. niponia. Inter-specific distances between R. niponia and other five aegid species ranged from 23.8% to 35.6%. Morphological diagnosis and images of R. niponia are also provided as a valuable contribution toward the identification of Rocinela species in further taxonomic and ecological studies.

DNA Barcoding of Scolelepis (Scolelepis) sagittaria (Annelida, Spionidae) in Korea, with a Morphological Variability of the Species

  • The polychaete Scolelepis (Scolelepis) sagittaria was originally described from Japanese waters and subsequently reported from Korean waters. In this study, we determined for the first time the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 16S ribosomal DNA (16S rDNA), and nuclear 18S ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) sequences of Korean specimens of S. (S.) sagittaria. We also assessed intraspecific variation in the shape of the prostomium of this species based on an examination of 247 individuals. All materials were collected from intertidal sandy beaches of the Korea Strait. The molecular data and morphological observations reported herein will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the taxonomic relationships among members of the genus Scolelepis.
