  • Cyprinids are popular species for aquaculture worldwide, with Asia being a significant contributor to their production. In Korea, common carp (Cyprinus carpio), koi carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus), and goldfish (Carassius auratus) are cultivated domestically and imported for ornamental or human consumption purposes. Among the viruses that infect cyprinids, cyprinid herpesvirus-2 (CyHV-2), koi herpesvirus (KHV, also known as cyprinid herpesvirus-3), and carp edema virus (CEV) are of particular concern as they cause substantial economic losses to the aquaculture industry. In this study, we investigated these viruses in both of domestic and imported cyprinids. Our results revealed that CyHV-2 was only detected in imported goldfish from Thailand. To further investigate the genetic characteristics of them, the marker A region was analyzed. Despite belonging to the same cluster with isolates from China, France, Poland, and Israel, CyHV-2 detected in this study showed distinct differences in their repetitive sequence sizes. Furthermore, two different forms of KHV/CEV coinfection were identified from domestic koi carp, both of which exhibited typical symptoms. Phylogenetic analysis showed that one KHV isolate (ScKc-2105-K) was of the Asian type and closely related to isolates from Japan, Indonesia, Belgium, Taiwan, and China. Two CEV isolates (ScKc-2105-CE and GhKc-2207-CE) be- longed to the IIa type and showed high similarity with isolates from the USA, France, and Korea. Notably, koi carp injected with cultured KHV (ScKc-2105-K) showed 78.0% cumulative mortality within 14 days post-injection (dpi). Our findings support the importance of regular surveillance of viral diseases in cyprinids.

  • The spermatozoal ultrastructure of Acheilognathus yamatsutae was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The mature spermatozoa are similar to those of other cyprinids as follows: a spherical nucleus with a shallow nuclear fossa, a short midpiece containing mitochondria and a long flagellum. However, there are some differences from other cyprinids in the orientation and position of the centrioles, the number of mitochondria, and the structure of vesicles. The position of the proximal centriole was of two types: one located on the side of nucleus decline, the other situated on the opposite side.

Breadth of pitted surface about 66%(Carassius carassius) to 85%(Acanthorhodeus asmussi ) of breadth of bone. 3. The position and distinct ratio of anterior angle correlated. 4. Posterior limb always longer than anteriro, but posterior edentulous process not shorter than anterior's or equal. 5. Zacco platypus with pitted surface on anterior limb , but Z.temmincki without it. 6. Teeth one to three rowed in accordance with the differences of each genus : a. one rowed genera ..... Carassius , Pseudorasbora, Sarcocheilichthys (Sakiyae), Pungtungia, Acheilognathus, Acanthorhodeus. b. two rowed genera ........ Pseudogobio, Gnathopogon, Tribolodon. c. Three rowed genera .... Cyprinus, Hemibarbus, Zacco , Culter 7. Teeth of main (primary ) row with four or five teeth is symmetrized exceptive three genera (Tribolodon, Zacco, Culter). 8. Grinding surface and bill type correlated. 9. In Acheilognathus, A.Yamatsutae have one or two indistinct serration but each individual is unlike.

  • Study on spermatid and spermatozoon of a Korean endemic freshwater fish, Microphysogobio yaluensis, has been carried out by transmission electron microscope. Spermiogenesis involves conspicuous modifications intercelluar movement such as centrioles and mitochondria migration, nuclear depression and structural changes for instance chroatin condensation, excess of cytoplasm. The mature spermatozoa are similar to those of other cyprinids as follows: a spherical nucleus with a shallow nuclear fossa, a short midpiece containing several mitochondria and encircling the basal body of the flagellum. However there are some differences in the orientation of the centrioles, the number of the mitochondria and distribution of vesicles from other cyprinids. It could be concluded that the M. yaluensis spermiogenesis belongs to type 2, and its mature spermatozoon is charaterized by a unique feature which may provide a useful systematic character.

  • 1. A total of 260 individuals of carp was collected from Nakdong and Hyungsan Rivers. 2. The normal dental form of carp is 3, 1, 1-1, 1, 3, but the author observed abnormal dental forms (3, 2 or 1, 1, (+1)-1, 1 or 2, 3). 3. Variation ratios of dental forms are : A. Normal form; 3, 1, 1-1, 1, 3..........88.85% B. Abnormal forms; a. 3, 2, 1-1, 1 or 2, 3..........2.31% b. 3, 1, 1, 1-1, 1 or 2, 3..........5.00% c. 3, 2, 1, 1-1, 1 or 2, 3..........3.07% d. with 2 or 3 bone processes..........0.77% 4. The ratios among the length of first row (I), length of second tooth in first row ($I_{-2}$) and mid line(M) are as follows; 5. The growth of bone process beside second row tooth is not concerned with the body growth. 6. The number of the groove on second tooth in first row increases according to the growth of body.

  • The ichthyofauna and structure of the fish community of Hapcheon Lake on the Hwang River were surveyed at six localities from May 2004 to Feb. 2005. There were 36 species belonging to 31 genera and 12 families in the Hapcheon Lake system. Of these, 24 species (66.7%) were cyprinids; cobitids and centropomids were next with 2 species (5.6%) each. The dominant species in the Hapcheon Lake system was Hemiculter eigenmanni (relative abundance 28.4%), the subdominant species Hemibarbus labeo (24.1%). Ten species (28.3%) of the 36 were Korean endemic species. Among the endemic species, H. eigenmanni and Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae were abundant at each locality except site 6, but the eight other species were rare. In biomass, H. labeo comprised about 36.5% of the total weight, H. eigenmanni 22.3%, Cyprinus carpio 7.5%, Hypomesus nipponensis 6.9%, Culter brevicauda 3.7% and Lepomis macrochirus 3.6%. Average dominance, diversity, and evenness index of the fish community collected from six localities in the Hapcheon Lake system were 0.21, 0.85, and 0.67, respectively.

  • Spermatozoa of Aphyocypris chinensis was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The investiation revaled that, spermatozoa display a round head, a small midpiece and a long tail region. In the spermatozoa, the nucleus contains highly condensed homogeneous chromation with small electron lucent areas. The base of the nucleus is slightly invaginated laterally by the nuclear fossa which contains the proximal centriole. The two centrioles orientated at an obtus angle (130°) to each other. The midpiece encircles the flagellum and is completely separated from it by the cytoplasmic channel. The midpiece contains more than 12 mitochondria. The mitochondria are arranged in 4~5 layer and are asymmetrically distributed in the postnuclear cytoplasm. The mitochondria surround the proximal part of the flagellum. The flagellum has classical 9+2 axoneme and no lateral fins. The spermatozoa of A. chinensis are similar to those of other cyprinids having a spherical head with a shallow nuclear fossa, a short midpiece including the asymmetrical arrangement of mitochondria and the lateral insertion of flagellum. However, there are some differences in the orientation of centrioles and the number of the mitochondria.
