  • An approximate theory of circular chlindrical shells under arbitrary load is derived on the basis of Vlasov's semimembrane theory. With this approximate theory concrete cylindrical shells subjected to wind loading is analized and its accuracy is investigated with the results of Donnell's equation. In this study the foollowing results are abtained : (1) The expression of .kappa.$\_$2/=.part.$\^$2/.omega./.part. s$\^$2/ for the change of curvature gives much simplicated closed form colution. (2) This approximate theory is to be applicable with sufficient accuracy in the stress analysis of concrete cylindreical shells which the ratio L/D is equal or greater than three.

  • This paper presents the mode-shape analysis of the cross-ply laminated composite cylindrical shallow shells. First, the kinematic relations of strains and deformation are given. Then, using Hamilton's principle, governing differential equations are developed for a general curved shell. Finally, the stress-strain relation for the laminated, cross-ply composite shells are obtained. By using some simplifications and assuming Fourier series as a displacement field, the governed differential equations are solved by the matrix algebra for shallow shells. Employing the computer algebra system called MATHEMATICA; a computer program has been prepared for the solution. The results obtained by this solution are compared with the results obtained by (ANSYS and SAP2000) programs, in order to verify the accuracy and reliability of the solution presented.

  • In this paper, the vibro-acoustic behaviors of vibrational cylindrical shells are investigated by using structural intensity approach. The reducing interior noise method for vibrating cylindrical shells is proposed by altering and redistributing the structural intensity through changing the damping property of the structure. The concept of proposed novel method is based on the properties of structural intensity distribution on cylindrical shells under different load and damping conditions, which can reflects power flow in the structures. In the study, the modal formulas of structural intensity are developed for the steady state vibration of cylindrical shell structures. The detailed formulas of structural intensity are derived by substituting modal quantities, in which the effect of main parameters such as weight coefficients and distribution functions on structure intensity are analyzed and discussed. Numerical simulations are first carried out based on the structural intensity analytical solutions of modal formulas. Through simulating the coupling vibration and acoustical radiation problems of cylindrical shell, the relationship between vibro-acoustic and structural intensity distribution is derived. We find that for cylindrical shell, by properly arranging damping conditions, the structural intensity can be efficiently changed and further the noise property can be improved. The proposed methodology has important implications and potential applications in the vibration and noise control of fuselage structure.

  • In this paper, the strong in-plane vibration has been experimentally observed at the end of a finite cylindrical shell. The strong in-plane vibration was generated by the evanescent wave field, which was excited along about half the length of the shell. The evanescent waves were generated due to mode conversion of elastic waves at the ends of the cylindrical shells.

  • This paper investigates the free vibrations of cylindrical shells made of time-dependent materials for different viscoelastic models under various boundary conditions. During the extraction of equations, the displacement field is estimated through the first-order shear deformation theory taking into account the transverse normal strain effect. The constitutive equations follow Hooke's Law, and the kinematic relations are linear. The assumption of axisymmetric is included in the problem. The governing equations of thick viscoelastic cylindrical shell are determined for Maxwell, Kelvin-Voigt and the first and second types of Zener's models based on Hamilton's principle. The motion equations involve four coupled partial differential equations and an analytical method based on the elementary theory of differential equations is used for its solution. Relying on the results, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of viscoelastic shells are identified. Conducting a parametric study, we examine the effects of geometric and mechanical properties and boundary conditions, as well as the effect of transverse normal strain on natural frequencies. The results in this paper are compared against the results obtained from the finite elements analysis. The results suggest that solutions achieved from the two methods are ideally consistent in a special range.

  • A relatively simple two-dimensional multilayered shell model is presented for predicting both global quantities and stress distributions across the thickness of multilayered thick shells, that is based on a third-order zig-zag approach. As for any zig-zag model, the layerwise kinematics is accounted for, with the stress continuity conditions at interfaces met a priori. Moreover, the shell model satisfies the zero transverse shear stress conditions at the upper and lower free surfaces of the shell, irrespective of the lay-up. By changing the parameters in the displacement model, some higher order shell models are obtained as particular cases. Although it potentially has a wide range of validity, application is limited to cylindrical shell panels in cylindrical bending, a lot of solutions of two-dimensional models based on rather different simplyfying assumptions and the exact three-dimensional elasticity solution being available for comparisons for this benchmark problem. The numerical investigation performed by the present shell model and by the shell models derived from it illustrates the effects of transverse shear modeling and the range of applicability of the simplyfying assumptions introduced. The implications of retaining only selected terms depending on the radius-to-thickness ratio are focused by comparing the present solutions to the exact one and to other two-dimensional solutions in literature based on rather different simplyfying assumptions.

  • The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural rotational coupling between shell and plate is simulated using the rotational artificial spring. For the translational coupling, the continuity conditions for the displacements of shell and plate are used. For the uncoupled annular plate, the transverse motion is considered and the in-plane motions are not. And the additional transverse and in-plane motions of the coupled annular plate by shell deformation are considered in analysis. Theoretical formulations are based on Love's thin shell theory. The frequency equation of the combined shell with an annular plate is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. The effect of inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position and thickness of annular plate on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. To demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method, the finite element analysis is performed.

  • This paper analyse the mechanical characteristics of geometrical and material nonlinearity behavior of cylindrical shell roofs subjected to a concentrated load. The shell elements were modeled using 'NISA2016' software as 3D general shell element and 3D composite shell element. The 3D shell element includes deformation due to bending, membrane, membrane-bending coupling and shear perpendicular to the grain effects is suited for modeling moderately thick or thin general shells and laminated composite shells. And The 3D composite shell element consists of a number of layers of perfectly bonded anisotropic and orthotropic materials. The purpose of this research is to analysis the load-deflection curves considering the combined geometric and material nonlinearity of cylindrical shells. In a shallowed cylindrical shell, snap-through curve can be found.

  • The free vibration analysis of the simply supported steel and composite cylindrical shells are investigated. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the shell are experimentally obtained by impact testing using an impact hammer and an accelerometer. The effects of the material and geometry on the vibrational characteristics of the shell are examined. The experimental results are compared with the analytical and a finite element results. They showed good agreement with each other.
