A growing attention has been paid to the optimum design of structures in recent years. Most studies on the optimum design of reinforced concrete structures has been mainly focussed to the design of structural members such as beams, slabs and columns, and there exist few studies that deal with the optimum design of large-scale concrete shell structures. The purpose of the present investigation is, therefore, to set up an efficient optimum design method for the large-scale reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures like intake tower of reservoir. The major design variables are the dimensions and steel areas of each member of structures. The construction cost which is compo8ed of the concrete, steel, and form work costs, respectively, is taken as the objective function. The constraint equations for the design of intake-tower are derived on the basis of strength design method. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. The efficient optimlzation algorithrns which can execute the automatic optimum design of reinforced concrete intake tower based on the strength design method were developed. 2. Since the objective function and design variables were converged to their optimum values within the first or second iteration, the optimization algorithms developed in this study seem to be efficient and stable. 3. When using the strength design method, the construction cost could be saved about 9% compared with working stress design method. Therefore, the reliability of algorithm was proved. 4. The difference in construction cost between the optimum designs with substructures and with entire structure was found to be small and thus the optimum design with substructures may conveniently be used in practical design. 5. The major active constraints of each structural member were found to be the 'bending moment constraint for slab, the minimum longitudinal steel ratio constraint for tower body and the shearing force, bending moment and maximum eccentricity constraints for footing, respectively. 6. The computer program developed in the present study can be effectively used even by an uneiperienced designer for the optimum design of reinforced concrete intake-tower on the basis of strength design method.

We are developing a biomimetic robot based on the Sea Lamprey. The robot consists of a cylindrical electronics bay propelled by an undulatory body axis. Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators generate propagating flexion waves in five undulatory segments of a polyurethane strip. The behavior of the robot is controlled by an electronic nervous system (ENS) composed of networks of discrete-time map-based neurons and synapses that execute on a digital signal processing chip. Motor neuron action potentials gate power transistors that apply current to the SMA actuators. The ENS consists of a set of segmental central pattern generators (CPGs), modulated by layered command and coordinating neuron networks, that integrate input from exteroceptive sensors including a compass, accelerometers, inclinometers and a short baseline sonar array (SBA). The CPGs instantiate the 3-element hemi-segmental network model established from physiological studies. Anterior and posterior propagating pathways between CPGs mediate intersegmental coordination to generate flexion waves for forward and backward swimming. The command network mediates layered exteroceptive reflexes for homing, primary orientation, and impediment compensation. The SBA allows homing on a sonar beacon by indicating deviations in azimuth and inclination. Inclinometers actuate a bending segment between the hull and undulator to allow climb and dive. Accelerometers can distinguish collisions from impediment to allow compensatory reflexes. Modulatory commands mediate speed control and turning. A SBA communications interface is being developed to allow supervised reactive autonomy.
In this study, the effect of Nano silica (SiO2) on the buckling strength of the glass fiber reinforced laminates containing the machining process causes holes were investigated. The tests have been applied on two status milled and non-milled. To promote the mechanical behavior of the fiber-reinforced glass epoxy-based composites, Nano sio2 was added to the matrix to improve and gradation. Nano sio2 is chosen because of flexibility and high mechanical features; the effect of Nanoparticles on surface serenity has been studied. Thus the effect of Nanoparticles on crack growth and machining process and delamination caused by machining has been studied. We can also imply that many machining factors are essential: feed rate, thrust force, and spindle speed. Also, feed rate and spindle speed were studied in constant values, that the thrust forces were studied as the main factor caused residual stress. Moreover, entrance forces were measured by local calibrated load cells on machining devices. The results showed that the buckling load of milled laminates had been increased by about 50% with adding 2 wt% of silica in comparison with the neat damaged laminates while adding more contents caused adverse effects. Also, with a comparison of two milling tools, the cylindrical radius-end tool had less destructive effects on specimens.

Fuel assembly's mechanical characterization test facility (FAMeCT) in KAERI was constructed with upgraded functional features such as increased loading capacity, underwater vibration testing and severe earthquake simulation for extended fuel design guideline. This facility is designed and developed to provide out-pile fuel data for accident analysis model and fuel licensing. Functional tests of FAMeCT were performed to confirm functionality, structural integrity, and validity of newly-built fuel assembly mechanical test facility. Test program includes signal check of data acquisition system, load delivering capacity using real-sized fuel assemblies and a standard loading cylindrical rigid specimen. Fuel assembly's lateral bending test was carried out up to 30 mm of pull-out displacement. Limit case axial compression loading test up to 33 kN was performed to check structural integrity of UCPS (Upper Core Plate Simulator) support frame. Test results show that all test equipment and measurement system have acceptable range of alignment, signal to noise ratio, load carrying capacity limit without loss of integrity. This paper introduces newly constructed fuel assembly's mechanical test facility and summarizes results of functional test for the mechanical test equipment and data acquisition system.
In this study, an investigation is made from the statics and economic aspects of the possibility of using the composite material ferrocement on the surfaces of squat cylindrical grain silos. For this purpose, the geometry of two model silos, each of height 5 m and diameter 5 m and 12.5 m, was designed. Five different reinforced plates of 10 and 20 mm thickness were produced to research the most suitable ferrocement plates to be used on the surface of these silos. Most durable reinforcement type for covering the silo surface was determined by pressure and bending tests. Grade 30 and Grade 55 steel plates were also considered for use in covering steel-coated silos. In the statics analysis performed with SAP2000, the least plate thicknesses needed for silos surfaced with Grade 30 and Grade 55 steel were found to be 6.20 mm and 4.70 mm respectively for silos of diameter 5 m, and 6.70 mm and 5.00 mm for silos of diameter 12.5 m. In the economic analysis, it was found that 20 mm thick Type 4 (with a wire diameter of 0.30 mm and a mesh aperture of $2mm{\times}2mm$ square type) reinforced ferrocement surfacing material was 5.6-6.1 times more economical than Grade 30 steel surfacing material and 4.4-4.7 times more economical than using Grade 55 steel. These results show that ferrocement can be used in place of steel from the point of view both of statics and economy.

We developed the durability estimation and design systems to minimize the volume, considering the durability, efficiency, and design requirements of worm gears. That is, we consider each kind of factors affecting on durability on the basis of AGMA Standard for the cylindrical and double-enveloping worm gears. We also estimate input power on the basis of wear and durability, bending strength and deflection of worm shaft, and we developed the durability estimation and design systems of power transmission worm gears introducing the optimal design method on the personal computer to be easily used in field. Also, we developed a method which converts the design variables obtained from the optimal design method to integer values(number of worm threads, number of worm threads, number of worm wheel teeth, etc.,) to be used in real design and production. The developed durability estimation and design method can be easily applied to the design of worm gears used as power transmission devices in machineries and is expected to be used for weight minimization of worm gear unit.
Two-for-one twister is a kind of textile machine and makes special fancy yarn which is twisted two times per one revolution in order to increase tensile strength and wear resis-tance of yarn. Spindle mechanism has to be stable and continuous motion in high speed revolution, and then optimal design is necessary to analyze dynamic characteristics of spindle unit. Spindle unit is consist of blade and rotary disc that are cylindrical body of revolution. For analysis of the dynamic characteristics of spindle unit, transfer matrix method is used and a numerical code SPINDLE also. Torsion and natural bending frequency of the spindle unit are examined. Its displacement mode is studied in function of variable revolutions.
The effect of isothermal aging on the crystallization of $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9$ metallic glass has been investigated by electrical resistivity, X-ray measurements, bending test, thermal analysis and transmission electron microscpy. Amouphous $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9$ alloy was annealed isothermally for 5 to 1200 min. between $300^{\circ}C$ and $540^{\circ}C$. It has been found that close relation between relative resistivity and X-ray diffraction pattern showed. The crystalline peaks of ${\alpha}$-(Fe, Si) and $Fe_2B$ are detected by X-ray experiment. The crystalline phases observed by TEH show ${\alpha}$-(Fe, Si) and $Fe_2B$ with dendritic and cylindrical morphology, respectively. It has been also found that the embrittleness of aged samples rapidly increased with the crystallization and was shown before the crystallization.

The reinforced concrete farm silos on the elastic foundatin are widely used in agricultural engineering because of their superior structural performance, economy and attractive appearance. Various methods for the analysis and design of farm silo, such as the analytical method, the finite difference method, and the finite element methods, can be used. But the analytical procedure can not be applied for the intricate conditions in practice. Therefore lately the finite element method has been become in the structural mechanics. In this paper, a method of finite element analysis for the cylindrical farm silo on ffness matrix for the elastic foundation governed by winkler's assumption. A complete computer programs have been developed in this paper can be applicable not only to the shell structures on elastic foundation but also to the arbitrary three dimensional structures. Assuming the small deflection theory, the membrane and plate bending behaviours of flat plate element can be assumed mutually uncoupled. In this case, the element has 5 degrees of freedom per node when defined in the local coordinate system. However, when the element properties are transformed to the global coordinates for assembly, the 6th degree of freedom should be considered. A problem arises in this procedure the resultant stiffness in the 6th degree of freedom at this node will be zero. But this singularity of the stiffness matrix can be eliminated easily by merely replacing the zero diagonal by dummy stiffness.
For the first time, an accurate analytical solution, based on coupled three-dimensional (3D) piezoelasticity equations, is presented for free vibration analysis of the angle-ply elastic and piezoelectric flat laminated panels under arbitrary boundary conditions. The present analytical solution is applicable to composite, sandwich and hybrid panels having arbitrary angle-ply lay-up, material properties, and boundary conditions. The modified Hamiltons principle approach has been applied to derive the weak form of governing equations where stresses, displacements, electric potential, and electric displacement field variables are considered as primary variables. Thereafter, multi-term multi-field extended Kantorovich approach (MMEKM) is employed to transform the governing equation into two sets of algebraic-ordinary differential equations (ODEs), one along in-plane (x) and other along the thickness (z) direction, respectively. These ODEs are solved in closed-form manner, which ensures the same order of accuracy for all the variables (stresses, displacements, and electric variables) by satisfying the boundary and continuity equations in exact manners. A robust algorithm is developed for extracting the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The numerical results are reported for various configurations such as elastic panels, sandwich panels and piezoelectric panels under different sets of boundary conditions. The effect of ply-angle and thickness to span ratio (s) on the dynamic behavior of the panels are also investigated. The presented 3D analytical solution will be helpful in the assessment of various 1D theories and numerical methods.
