  • The suppression of fluid force acting on a square prism near plane wall was studied by attaching fences on the corners of the prism. The height of the fence was 10% of the square width and the range of Reynolds number considered was Re=$2.0{\times}10^4$. The experimental parameters were the attaching position and numbers of fences, the space ratios G/B(G/B=0.1${\sim}$1.2) between prism and plane wall. The average drag coefficients were increased and the average lift coefficients were decreased and increased with the space ratios toward plane wall. The drag of the prism was reduced average 7.6% with the space ratios by attaching the normal fence at the rear and upper corner and the horizontal normal fence at the rear and lower corner on the prism. In this case, the separated flow at the front and upper corner was reattached on the upper side of the prism and the vortex streets between the prism and plane wall were appeared more slowly than that of prism without fences.

  • A PTO (power-take-off) mechanism by using relative heave motions between a floating buoy and its inner mass (magnet or amateur) is suggested. The inner power take-off system is characterized by a mass with linear stiffness and damping. A vertical truncated cylinder is selected as a buoy and a special station-keeping system is proposed to minimize pitch motions while not affecting heave motions. By numerical examples, it is seen that the maximum power can actually be obtained at the optimal spring and damper condition, as predicted by the developed WEC(wave energy converter) theory. Then, based on the developed theory, several design strategies are proposed to further enhance the maximum PTO, which includes the intentional mismatching among heave natural frequency of the buoy, natural frequency of the inner dynamic system, and peak frequency of input wave spectrum. By using the intentional mismatching strategy, the generated power is actually increased and the required damping value is significantly reduced, which is a big advantage in designing the proposed WEC with practical inner LEG (linear electric generator) system.

  • The relation between the height of ascending solvents and its velocity were studied with strips of Toyo No. 50 filter paper. The filter paper strip of 3cm width and cat 30 cm length is hooked down or fixed between two sheets of glass plates inside a cylinder containing the solvent, in which the lower end of the strip is dipped. As the solvents, acetone, hydrochloric acid, water or mixtures of these are used. For short time intervals, Ostwald's folmula $h = Kt^n$ was found to be most suitable to express the relation between the height of the solvent front, h, and time, t. For longer time intervals, results will be discussed in the next paper. The mean values of the constant m in the above formula for pure acetone and pure water were 0.44 and 0.485, respectively, and that of K were 0.05 and 2.4, respectively. The time interval whose the above formula applies, for each solvent was 2 hours for the former, and a half hour for the later, respectively. The movement of solutes, such as $Cu^{++}$ and $Fe^{++}$ showed that the Rf values of solutes become constant values after a long periods; e.g., ca. 6 hours with 10N-HCl-Acetone (1 : 9) solvent.

  • Generally, marine transmissions contain straight shafts and helical gears, meaning that enginerooms require more space. In order to guarantee a levelengine space for conical involute gears or beveloid gears, both of which are important machine parts, a conical gear was used to replace the traditional cylinder gear. Owing to weak points such as the point contact phenomenon of the teeth, a limitation of the width of each tooth in terms of the addendum, the variational modification coefficient, and the difficulty of processing, research about conical involute gears remains at a standstill. Along with the increasing number of applications of conical involute gears, research on conical gear design technology is necessary. In this paper, in an effort to enhance conical gear design technology, research on the 3D modeling and stress analyses of helical conical involute gears were done.

  • Gonadal development, gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, and first sexual maturity of Reishia clavigera were investigated monthly from July 1998 to June 1999 through cytological and histological observations. R. clavigera had separate sexes, and was an internal fertilizer. The ma1e penis was located near the two tentacles. The ovary and testis were composed of a great number of oogenic lobules and spermatogenic tubules, respectively. The size of ripe oocyte ranged from 130 to 140 ${\mu}$m in diameter. The peripheral cytoplasm of the germinal vesicle of the ripe oocyte in many cases were surrounded by smaller yolk granules, while the eccentric cytoplasm was occupied with larger ones. The reproductive cycle of R. clavigera could be classified into five successive stages: early active, late active, ripe, spawning, and recovery. Spawning of females occurred from early July to August when the seawater reached above 24.8$^{\circ}C$. Spawning of males occurred from early June to August in the water above 22.8$^{\circ}C$. Minimum size for sexual maturity of both sexes was above 10.0 mm in shell height. Each egg capsule was a cylinder or spindle in shape, 4-6 mm in length and 1-2 mm in width. Colors of newly spawned egg capsules showed yellowish white or pale yellow, while those with veliger larvae showed pale black, and released larvae or dead egg capsules showed black violet. The fecundity in an egg capsule ranged from 70 to 91 eggs (mean=80.28 eggs).

  • Stratified charge compression ignition (SCCI) combustion, also known as HCCI(homogeneous charge compression ignition), offers the potential to improve fuel economy and reduce emission. In this study, SCCI combustion was studied in a single cylinder gasoline DI engine, with a direct injection system. We investigated the effects of air-fuel ratio, intake temperature and injection timing such as early injection and late injection on the attainable SCCI combustion region. Injection timing during the intake process was found to be an important parameter that affects the SCCI region width. We also find it. The effects of mixture stratification and fuel reformation can be utilized to reduce the required intake temperature for suitable SCCI combustion under each set of engine speed and compression ratio conditions.

  • This study describes the merits of PWM control of hydraulic system using high speed on-off valves. Generally, Electro-hydraulic valves can be classified into two classification: valves which are controlled by analog signal and which are controlled by digital. The former includes hydraulic servo valves and proportional valves which require A/D converters as interface to digital computer and too costly and sensitive to oil contamination because of complexity in structures. The latter includes high speed on-off valves which do not require A/D converters because they are normally operated in a pulse width modulation(PWM) method, and are low in price and robust to oil contamination because of their simple structures. The objectives of this study is to analyze the limit cycle which regularly appear in the position control system using 2/2way high speed on-off valves and to give a criterion for the stability of this system. The nonlinear characteristics of PWM and cylinder friction of this system are described by harmonic linearization and the effects of parameter variations to the system stability are simulated.

  • An experimental and theoretical study on a pneumatic servo system has been conducted using on-off valves and a pneumatic cylinder. A V/I converter has been designed for rapid rising and falling of the solenoid current, which significantly improves the positioning accuracy and settling time of the servo system by shortening the valve opening time. Pulse width modulation was modified to operate on-off valves effectively. A state feedback controller which feeds back position, velocity and acceleration is used to control the system. The influence of controller gains on the system performance is studied to develop a scheme that automatically adjusts the gains using fuzzy logic theory. It is shown experimentally that the proposed fuzzy logic tuner works satisfactorily. A new method for measurements of valve effective areas is proposed, and a partially polytropic model is applied to simulation of the pneumatic system. Simulated results show good agreement with experimental data.

  • This study presents applications of the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) method for predicting the ultimate loading carrying capacity (Nu) of rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns subjected to eccentric loading. A database containing 141 experimental data was collected from available literature to develop the MARS model with a total of seven variables that covered various geometrical and material properties including the width of rectangular steel tube (B), the depth of rectangular steel tube (H), the wall thickness of steel tube (t), the length of column (L), cylinder compressive strength of concrete (f'c), yield strength of steel (fy), and the load eccentricity (e). The proposed model is a combination of the MARS algorithm and the grid search cross-validation technique (abbreviated here as GS-MARS) in order to determine MARS' parameters. A new explicit formulation was derived from MARS for the mentioned input variables. The GS-MARS estimation accuracy was compared with four available mathematical methods presented in the current design codes, including AISC, ACI-318, AS, and Eurocode 4. The results in terms of criteria indices indicated that the MARS model was much better than the available formulae.

  • In the direct injected gasoline engine, atomized spray is desired to achieve efficient mixture formation needed to good engine performance because the injection process leaves little time for the evaporation of fuels. Therefore, substantial understanding of global spray structure and quantitative characteristics of spray are decisive technology to optimize combustion system of a GDI engine. The combustion and emission characteristics of gasoline-fueled stratified-charge compression ignition(SCCI) engine according to intake temperature and compression ratio was examined. The fuel was injected directly to the cylinder under the high temperature condition resulting from heating the intake port. With this injection strategy, the SCCI combustion region was expanded dramatically without any increase in NOx emissions, which were seen in the case of compression stroke injection. Injection timing during the intake temperature was found to be an important parameter that affects the SCCI region width. The mixture stratification and the fuel reformation can be utilized to reduce the required intake temperature for suitable SCCI combustion under each set of engine speed and compression ratio conditions.
