  • To investigate the in-cylinder phenomena in a SI engine with 3 valves and pent-roof type combustion chamber, flow fields, fuel distributions, and flame propagations were measured in a single c!'tinder visualized engine. Flow fields were visualized by PTV system during the intake and compression process. Fuel distributions were measured by PLIF at the various engine conditions including the cold and hot engine conditions and the effect of air-shrouded injector on the fuel distribution was investigated also. In addition, flame propagation patterns were characterized.

  • The influence of the interface imperfect bonding on the flexural wave dispersion in the bilayered hollow circular cylinder is studied with utilizing three-dimensional linear theory of elastodynamics. The shear-spring type model is used for describing the imperfect bonding on the interface between the layers and the degree of the imperfectness is estimated through the dimensionless shear-spring parameters which enter the mentioned model. The method for finding the analytical expressions for the sought values and dispersion equation are discussed and detailed. Numerical results on the lowest first and second modes are presented and analyzed. These results are obtained for various values of the shear-spring parameters. According to these results, in particular, it is established that as a results of the imperfection of the bonding between the layers the new branches of the dispersion related the first fundamental mode arise and the character of the dispersion curve related to the second mode becomes more complicated.

  • Numerical solution of the forward-speed radiation problem for a half-immersed cylinder advancing in regular waves is presented by making use of the improved Green integral equation in the frequency domain. The B-spline higher order panel method is employed stance the potential and its derivative are unknown at the same time. The present numerical solution of the improved Green integral equation by the B-spline higher order Kelvin panel method is shown to be free of irregular frequencies which are present in the Green integral equation using the forward-speed Kelvin-type Green function.

  • Auxiliary port which had been known to be used to reduce the expansion loss of a refrigeration system was applied to a R134a reciprocating compressor in a household refrigerator cycle with an intention of improving the compressor performance. Effects of the auxiliary port on the compressor performance was investigated by a computer simulation program. When a simple hole was made on the side wall of the cylinder as an auxiliary port and surrounding gas inside the compressor shell was assumed to be drawn into the cylinder through the hole, maximum COP improvement of 1.66% was obtained. With auxiliary port equipped with a plate type of check valve, maximum COP was raised to be 1.99%. COP improvement was more distinctive with decreasing the discharge pressure; COP improvement was 5% with discharge pressure of 7 bar.

  • Fracture mechanics does work for concrete, provided that one uses a proper, nonlinear form of fracture mechanics in which a finite nonlinear zone at fracture front is being considered. The fracture process zone is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, and the development of model of fracture process zone is most important to describe fracture phenomena in concrete. This paper is about fracture behavior of concrete cylinder under lateral pressure. Concrete cylinders were made of high strength normal connote, steel fiber reinforced concrete and steel fiber reinforced polymer-impregnated concrete and concrete and the fracture behavior such as cracking propagation and ultimate load are observed. The fracture process zone is modelled by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with linear tension-softening curve and are implemented to the boundary element technique for the fracture analyses of the cylinders. The experimental results are compared with analysis results and tension-softening curves for the steel fiber reinforced concrete and steel fiber reinforced polymer-impregnated concrete are obtained by back analyses.

  • In this study, for the investigation of effects of several parameters, such as fluid mesh boundary size, cylinder or block shape, dimensions of depth, breadth and length at free suface, and fluid mesh element size to the depth direction on a reliable shock response of finite element model under underwater explosion with consideration of the bulk cavitation analysis of a simplified surface ship was carried out using the LS-DYNA3D/USA code. The shock responses were not much affected by the fluid mesh parameters. The computational time was greatly dependent on the number of DAA boundary segments. It is desirable to reduce the DAA boundary segments in the fluid mesh model, and it is not necessary to cover the fluid mesh boundary to or beyond the bulk cavitation zone just for the concerns about an initial shock wave response. It is also the better way to prefer cylinder type of the fluid mesh model to the block one.

  • The present paper investigates the heat transfer characteristics in a cylinder packed with porous medium of solid spheres for various parameters such as mass flow rate, sphere diameter, length of the porous medium, and gas temperatures. Pressures and temperatures at the inlet and outlet regions were measured by using static pressure gages and R-type thermocouples. The modified relationship based on the Ergun equation is suggested for the estimation of pressure drops. In addition, the useful empirical correlation for thermal efficiency is obtained in the current study. Thermal efficiency is expressed in terms of non-dimensional time, sphere diameter, porosity, and pressure drops. It is also found that the pressure drop through the cylinder becomes larger as the gas temperature does higher at the inlet region, whereas it substantially decreases when the inlet flow rate decreases.

  • Obstructive sleep apnea in patients, between 70 and 80 percent, can be cured with just a posture correcting. It needed to know the current position information for correcting the position. The pressure sensors of the array type were used to obtain position information. These sensors can obtain information from the experimenter about position. In addition, air cylinder corrected the position of the experimenter by lifting the bed. The experimenter can be changed position without breaking during sleep by the system.

  • Shaped Sound Focusing is defined as the generation of acoustically bright zone with a certain shape in space using multiple sources. The acoustically bright zone is a spatially focused region with relatively high acoustic potential energy level. In view of the energy transfer, acoustic focusing using multiple sources is essential because acoustic energy is very small to use other type of energy. It can be done by taking optimization techniques which can be acoustic brigtness control and acoustic contrast control. But it has not been frequently concerned about several cases, so the case of hollow cylinder shaped sound focusing is adapted and there wi11 be arguments about available control variables and spatially controllable region in this case.

  • Noise reduction for hydraulic pump is strongly demanded in the market with its efficiency and durability. In order to meet this demand, it is necessary to reveal mechanism for noise and relationship between the important factors. In this paper, mathematical model for cylinder pressure which is primary reason of pulsation and sound noise were established, and examined its pressure profile by simulation. Also, the valve plate of three kind types are manufactured and tested for piston pressure, pressure pulsation, and sound power level based on the tentative standard which is officially recognized.
