To investigate the motion-induced aeroelastic effects (or aerodynamic feedback effects) on a square cylinder in uniform flow, a series of wind tunnel tests involving the pressure measurement of a rigid model (RM) and simultaneous measurement of the pressure and vibration of an aeroelastic model (AM) have been systematically carried out. More specifically, the aerodynamic feedback effects on the structural responses, on the mean and root-mean-square wind pressures, on the power spectra and coherence functions of wind pressures at selected locations, and on the aerodynamic forces were investigated. The results indicated the vibration in the lock-in range made the shedding vortex more coherent and better organized, and hence presented unfavorable wind-induced effects on the structure. Whereas the vibration in the non-lock-in range generally showed insignificant effects on the flow structures surrounding the square cylinder.

H-mode or X-mode predominates in marine engines according to the number of cylinder. Generally, H-mode noticeably happen in the engine below 7-cylinder and X-mode remarkably happen above 8-cylinder in the engine operating range. Until now, FEA (Finite Element Analysis) of 3D engine model has been mainly used to estimate the engine vibration but it is very time consuming for simulation and difficult to model simplification. Furthermore, the accuracy of simulation shows a marked difference according to modeling method. Therefore it is very difficult to have contentable result from FEA for beginners and laymen. In this paper, the estimation method based on a test has been suggested to solve the difficulty.

Prototype cylinders were fabricated and validated through burst test and ambient cycling test in accordance with international standard.
In this study, the progressive inelastic deformation, so called, thermal ratchet phenomenon which can occur in high temperature liquid metal reactor was simulated with thermal ratchet structural test facility and 316L stainless steel test cylinder. The inelastic deformation of the reactor baffle cylinder can occur due to the moving temperature distribution along the axial direction as the hot free surface moves up and down under the cyclic heat-up and cool-down of reactor operations. The ratchet deformations were measured with the laser displacement sensor and LVDTs after cooling the structural specimen which experiences thermal load up to $550^{\circ}$ and the temperature differences of about $500^{\circ}C$. During structural thermal ratchet test, the temperature distribution of the test cylinder along the axial direction was measured from 28 channels of thermocouples and the temperatures were used for the ratchet analysis. The thermal ratchet deformation analysis was performed with the NONSTA code whose constitutive model is nonlinear combined kinematic and isotropic hardening model and the test results were compared with those of the analysis. Thermal ratchet test was carried out with respect to 9 cycles of thermal loading and the maximum residual displacements were measured to be 1.8mm. It was shown that thermal ratchet load can cause a progressive deformation to the reactor structure. The analysis results with the combined hardening model were in reasonable agreement with those of the tests.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the characteristics of the vortex- induced vibration of an elastically supported circular cylinder in the cross air flow. For a range of velocities, power spectral densities of the signals from a hot-wire anemometer placed in the wake of an oscillating circular cylinder and gap sensors placed in the both ends of a circular cylinder were obtained to determine vortex-shedding frequencies, natural frequencies and vibrating frequencies of a cylinder. The effects of slots in the test section on vortex shedding and cylinder oscillation were investigated. The present study covered the reduced velocity range 1.0 .leg. Ur .leg. 64.6. The response characteristics of the cylinder has been shown to vary extensively, depending on the slots in the test section as well as on the reduced velocity. For an elastically supported cylinder, a purely translation mode oscillation was observed at a low velocity, however a rotation mode oscillation was often superposed for higher velocities. These two oscillating frequencies were equal to their natural frequencies irrespective of the changes of free stream velocities.
This study was carried out to develop soybean thresher which is able to reduce the soybean threshing damage in comparison to the conventional thresher. A threshing cylinder with different diameter of 480 and 384 mm at each end and with one quarter disc pegs of 60 mm radius was developed and attached to the prototype thresher. A conventional thresher which has a threshing cylinder with $\wedge$ type threshing pegs and same diameter of 480 mm at each end was used for comparative test. A series of comparative performance test was conducted using sun-yu and chung-ja soybean. For sun-yu bean, which is white and usually used for soybean paste and soy sauce, the ratio of damaged beans of prototype ranged 2-3% for 330-360 rpm which is recommended cylinder speed by manufacturer. The ratio of damaged beans of conventional thresher was 3-4% for the same range of cylinder speed. chung-ja beans with black color usually shows high damaged ratio compared with white beans, thus cylinder speed of 250-300 rpm is recommended by manufacturer to reduce the damaged ratio. For this range of cylinder speed, the damaged ratio of prototype was 1.3-1.4% and it was 2.7-6.1% for the conventional thresher. Thus prototype is able to reduce the damaged ratio 1.5-5.0% compared with conventional thresher. Prototype shows 0.4% of unthreshed soybean ratio for sun-yu bean in the optimum range of cylinder speed and it was 0.87% for the conventional thresher. For chung-ja bean, the ratio of unthreshed soybean was almost same for both prototype and conventional thresher with the value of 4.0%. The reason of high unthreshed soybean ratio for chung-ja bean compared sun-yu bean is due to the high seed moisture content of 29.11% which is much higher than that of the recommended.

In this paper, as a basic research to apply the composite sandwich to underwater vehicle, the manufacturing, analysis and test methods, and weight saving effect of a composite sandwich cylinder under external pressure were studied. A two-step manufacturing method to prevent the wrinkling of the sandwich cylinder face was proposed and the three cylinders were made and tested. Finite element results based on the shell and solid model using MSC.Nastran were compared with test results. The comparison showed that the linear finite element analysis using the shell and solid elements can predict the buckling pressure of the sandwich cylinder with approximately 3% difference. The parametric study of the filament wound cylinders revealed that the composite sandwich can reduce the weight of the cylinder more than 30% compared with the filament wound cylinder supporting the same pressure.

This experimental study investigated the wake flow around an elastically supported circular cylinder. In this study, the Reynolds numbers are varied in the region of $1.4{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}3.2{\times}10^4$. Under these conditions, we have captured the process of the wake mechanism and the moving path of the vortex by measuring the velocity at each position in the wake around the cylinder. Further, these facts from the wind tunnel test are proved by a flow visualization test through a water channel. From the result, we have arrived at the following conclusions : i) The process (formation${\rightarrow}$growth${\rightarrow}$collapse) of vortex is observed in the wake around the cylinder, ii) The vortex efflux angle is approximately $16^{\circ}{\sim}17^{\circ}$ under the experimental conditions. These angles have no relationship with the velocity change and the existence of flow-induced vibrations of the cylinder, and iii) The moving path of the vortex center is obtained by spectrum analysis of the fluctuating velocity behind the cylinder. These are confirmed by conducting visualization tests.

In this study, a cylinder embedded within cemented soils was used to cause directly tensile failure of cemented soils. An existing dumbbell type direct tensile test and a split tensile test that is most general indirect tensile test were also carried out to verify the developed built-in cylinder tensile test. Testing specimens with two different sand/cement ratios (1:1 and 3:1) and two curing periods (7 and 28 days) were prepared and tested. Total 10 specimens were prepared for each case and their average value was evaluated. Unconfined compression tests were also carried out and the ratio of compressive strength and tensile strength was evaluated. The tensile strength determined by built-in cylinder tensile test was slightly higher than that by dumbbell type direct tensile test. The dumbbell type test has often failed in joint part of specimen and showed some difficulty to prepare a specimen. Among three tensile testing methods, the standard deviation of tensile strength by split tensile test was highest. It was shown that the split tensile test is applicable to concrete or rock with elastic failure but not for cemented soils having lower strength.
