A Study on Improving the Enhanced Durability of Cylinder Liner according to Cavitation Influence of Combat Equipment Engine (전투장비 엔진의 캐비테이션 영향에 따른 실린더 라이너의 내구성 강화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Cylinder liners used in diesel engines of combat equipment are prone to cavitation due to wet cooling. The damage caused by erosion and corrosion due to cavitation has a fatal effect on the performance and lifespan of a diesel engine. Therefore, a study was conducted to improve the durability of cylinder liners. Two surface treatment techniques were proposed: nitriding and chrome plating. It was observed that the amount of erosion on the surface of nitride-treated cylinder liners was high because the surface-treated part eroded due to its weak impact resistance against the bubble explosion generated by cavitation. In contrast, the chrome-plated cylinder liner had a lower amount of erosion among the specimens subjected to the accelerated test. These results verified that the resistance of chrome-plated liners against cavitation is high. Therefore, it can withstand the impact of bubble explosion. If the chrome plating thickness is set with reference to the KS standard, an exceptional durability of abrasion, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance can be obtained. If the thickness is set between 120~250㎛, it is expected that the durability of the cylinder liner can be improved. Although a recovery method for corroded cylinder liners is suggested, the proposed method has an inherent risk of crack generation. Therefore, further research is required to solve this problem.

  • Since the fuel oil of the bunker C grade, which is commonly burnt in the large marine diesel engine, causes the corrosive wear of cylinder liners and piston rings, a cylinder oil of high alkality is frequently used to prevent the wear. This practice, however, brings us an another problem to cause the abnormal wear. In this study the author made an investigation of the mechanism of the abnormal wear by the experiments surveying the influences of the alkality of a cylinder oil and the temperature of cylinder wall on the wear. The major results obtained from this study are as follows; A cylinder oil of low alkality is clearly effective for the preventation of the abnormal wear. Therefore, it is recommended that, prio to using a cylinder oil of high alkality, a cylinder oil of low alkality should be used until bringing an end to the initial wear. It is also observed that the abnormal wear depends largely on the temperature of the cylinder wall, that is, the higher the temperature goes up the severer the wear grows.

  • Marine diesel engines operate in environments in which damage easily occurs from corrosion. Recently, damage to cylinder liners has increased from corrosion wear caused by increased engine power. This damage can cause serious problems in the economy. Thus, many researchers have treated and studied damaged cylinder liners. However, a method is necessary for real-time monitoring of damage to cylinder liners during operation of the engine, before serious damage can occur. This study carries out reciprocating friction and wear tests on a cast iron specimen under various corrosion atmospheres and verifies the variations of friction coefficient and friction surface. Additionally, the friction coefficient and friction status are predicted by using a neural network that learns the vibration and frequency spectrum data from an acceleration sensor. According to our conclusions, amplitude is distributed highly at high frequencies, and values of standard deviation and kurtosis are high when damage to the friction surface is serious. The accuracy rate of the friction coefficient predicted by the neural network is over 80% of the real measured value without NaCl, and application of the neural network is very effective for diagnosing the friction condition and damage to the cylinder liner.

  • This paper presents the analysis technique and procedure of main engine components-cylinder block, cylinder liners, gasket and cylinder head-using the finite element method, which aims to assess mainly the potential of lower oil consumption in a view point of engine design and to decide subsequently the accuracy of engine design which was done. The F.E. model of an engine section consisting of one whole cylinder and two adjacent half cylinders is used, whereby the crankcase is cut off at the block bottom deck. By means of a 3-dimensional F.E. model-including cylinder block, liners, gasket, cylinder head, bolts and valve seat rings as separate parts a linear analysis of deformations and stresses was performed for three different loading conditions;assembly, thermal and gas loads. For the analysis of thermal boundary conditions also the temperature field had to be evaluated in a subsequent step.

  • With the advent of high speed and high output diesel engines, cavitation erosion-corrosion of wet cylinder liners is one of the most prevalent types of failure. The cavitation erosion-corrosion at cylinder liners in water cooled diesel engines is considered to be to the collapse of cavitation bubbles attributed to the cylinder liner vibration. To suppress cavitation damage in cylinder liner, the addition of an inhibitor would be more general method and innovations such as the improvement in the geometric design of the equipment or the selection of suitably resistant construction materials are necessary. In this study, photomicrographs from vibratory facility cavitation specimens and from an eroded liner of a field diesel engine are compared. The behavior of cavitation bubbles grown in fluid is observed under vibration conditions by taking direct photographs with high speed camera. In order to determine the contributions of pure cavitation erosion and of pure corrosion to the total cavitation damage are be studied by following an experimental programme which includes three types of test: (1)pure cavitation erosion test, (2)pure corrosion test, and (1)cavitation erosion-corrosion test. Also cavitation damage under vibratory cavitation is reduced by using flow in tap water.

  • Rapidly-solidified P/M aluminium alloys for automobile and home appliance industries were developed. Rapidly-solidification made it possible to refine microstructures and to expand the range of alloy composition. For example, Al-Si alloys containing transition metal have lower thermal expansion coefficient, more excellent wear resistance, higher strength, and better machinability than those of conventional aluminium alloys. Therefore, in Japan, the technologies on powder-extrusion and powder-forging of aluminium alloy powders are developed for fifteen years, and applied to several parts, such as cylinder liners of motor cycle engines, rotors and vanes of compressors for car air conditioner, oil pump rotor for racing car, and so on. In this presentation, applications for automobile are mentioned. In particular, cylinder liners made of particle-dispersed composites with fine alumina and graphite are in detail described.

Evaluation of Characteristics of CBN Honing Stone for Cylinder Liner Honing of Marine Diesel Engine

  • The cylinder liner of a low speed engine is one of the most important parts of the marine diesel engines used in merchant ships. However, a sufficient degree of precision in the manufacturing method for these cylinder liners has never existed. Conventional honing stones have always been used for machining large marine cylinder liners. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a honing process that optimizes the honing characteristics. In this study, a CBN honing stone was manufactured to improve the honing performance for a cylinder liner and shorten the processing time, and machining experiments on a practical cylinder liner were carried out. Then, a comparison was made between the CBN honing and honing with a conventional GC stone using parameters such as the honing time, machining quantity, and honing cost. As a result, for a #60 CBN stone, the machining amount was significantly improved compared to the conventional one by about $1.1{\mu}m$/min, and in respect to the machining cost, a reduction of about 57% was achieved. However, an improvement in the process with a #800 CBN stone could not be expected because it did not show a significant difference compared to the case of the existing stone. From the above results, if the liner were honed using a CBN honing stone, the rough machining and intermediate processing during an early stage of the honing process were excellent compared to the conventional one. However, we could not find a significant difference in the case of finish honing.

And the oil groove is on the cylinder liner inside wall for the lubrication between a piston and cylinder. The machining process of oil groove has been carried by manual work so far, because of the diversity of the shape. Recently, we developed an automatic grinding robot system for oil groove machining of engine cylinder liners. It can covers various types of oil grooves and adjust its position by itself. The grinding robot system consists of a robot, a machining tool head, sensors and a control system. The robot automatically recognizes the cylinder liner's inside configuration by using a laser displacement sensor and a vision sensor after the cylinder liner is placed on a set-up equipment.
