  • A large volume of work has been attempted to improve the separation efficiency of cyclone by establishing new design and optimum operation. An auxiliary device called Post Cyclone (PoC) has been introduced and tested in an earlier work (In order to reduce the emission of fine dust from the reverse flow cyclones). This work applies the PoC to remove the dust and gaseous elements using a centrifugal effect remained in the discharging flow over the cyclone. As a result of the experiment, the efficiency was found best at the high gas concentration and low inlet velocity.

  • Dust collecting performance of axial-vane type cyclone for oil mist was analyzed in this study. For predicting cut diameter size of cyclone, the number and angle of vane ($tan{{\beta}_2}^{\prime}$) was simulated by CFD. As the result, $tan{{\beta}_2}^{\prime}$ was decreased as the number of vane was increased and the angle of inclination(${{\beta}_2}^{\prime}$) decreased, and it cause strong swirl flow. Therefore, it could be confirmed that as the number of vane was increased and the angle of inclination was decreased, cut diameter size was decreased. Also, by verifying the results of CFD through experiment, the cut diameter size could be $2{\mu}m$ at $4m^3/min$ of flow rate.

  • An aftertreatment system of diesel exhaust gas was attempted to extract particulate matters. The system consisted of a corona-less electrostatic precipitator to agglomerate soot particles and a counter-flow cyclone to collect them. When the effect of high voltage was examined at different configuration of electrode plates, the case of positive 15kV at both plates showed the maximum reduction of 38% in diesel smoke level. However, the back pressure became quite high as engine speed increased, so that minimizing pressure drop in cyclone should be studied with improving collection efficiency of soot particles.

  • The characteristics of Depth-Area-Duration (DAD) for 50 storms over the Geumgang river basin have been analysed in terms of various storm causes using the precipitation data during the period from 1984 to 2003. Results show that the ratio of the precipitation depth to duration, and the ratio of decrease in the precipitation depth to area are the largest in the case of the tropical cyclone. Storm maximization ratios are in the range 1.03 to 2.66 for the 50 selected heavy precipitation cases over Geumgang river basin, with the largest value for the tropical cyclone case, suggesting that the tropical cyclone could cause heavier precipitation than the other storms. In addition, the 24-hour probable maximum precipitation for the Geumgang river basin is estimated to be about 745 mm in the maximum precipitation area.

  • The internal temperature will change depending on operation conditions and material of cyclone dust collector. This study compares the results of collection efficiency and temperature distribution on the different heat flux at wall of dust collector. The previous researcher's experiment results were used to confirm the reliability of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) model. Based on this verified CFD model, we extended the analysis on the cyclone dust collectors. In CFD study, we used RNG k-epsilon model for analysis of turbulence flow, fluid is air, the velocity at inlet is 10 m/s, the temperature of air is $600^{\circ}C$. Because of the difference of outer vortex and inner vortex temperature, the collection efficiency will reduce with the increase of heat flux, showed the highest collection efficiency at heat insulation.

  • Over the last decade substantial improvements have been made in our ability to observe the tropical cyclone boundary layer. Low-level wind speed maxima have been frequently observed in Global Positioning System dropwindsonde (GPS sonde) profiles. Data from GPS sondes and coastal Doppler radars were employed to evaluate the characteristics of tropical cyclone vertical wind profiles in open ocean conditions and at landfall. Changes to the mean vertical wind profile were observed azimuthally and with decreasing radial distance toward the cyclone center. Wind profiles within the hurricane boundary layer exhibited a logarithmic increase with height up to the depth of the wind maximum.

  • A numerical study was performed to observe the relation between internal flow characteristics and operating temperatures in a Lapple cyclone. The present numerical results agree reasonably well with previous experimental and numerical results. As the operating temperature increases, the pressure drop decreases due to decrease of wall shear stress and tangential velocities. A detailed comparison of pressure drops in the cyclone between theoretical prediction models and the present numerical simulations is also presented for wide range of operating temperatures.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the de-entrainment of boron for evaporators used in nuclear power plants. The forced circulation and semi-continuous type evaporator was used in the experiment. Cyclone and glass-wool packed column which is supposed to provide good decontamination factor as well as easy maintenance, were selected as de-entrainment devices to be used in the evaporation of radioactive liquid wastees. The de-entrainment device combined with cyclone and glass-wool column has shown overall DF more than 1, 000 for boron.

  • In this study, performance and environmental characteristics of cyclone vacuum cleaners are analyzed and product improvement methods are investigated to minimize environmental effect of the cleaners using the result. A simplified LCA method is used to analyze environmental characteristics of the cyclone vacuum cleaners. Two cyclone vacuum cleaners with similar specifications are chosen for the experiment. Typical characteristics of cyclone vacuum cleaners such as energy consumption, suction force, noise and temperature are measured and compared. Most environmental effect was caused by the energy consumption in use phase of life cycle. Some ideas are created to reduce energy consumption of the vacuum cleaners in use phase like installing baffle, and methods to extend exchange period of filter. It is analyzed how recyclability rate of vacuum cleaners could be improved to reduce the environmental effect in whole life of the vacuum cleaners.
