In this Paper, we present an efficient method for finite element vibration analysis of constantly rotating structures with cyclic symmetry, which are deformed to some considerable extent by centrifugal force, Coriolis force and operating load, and vibrate due to several types of exciting forces. A structure with cyclic symmetry is composed of circumferentially repeated substructures with the same geometry. Being only one substructure modeled. the dynamic characteristics of the structure can be analyzed systematically. rapidly and exactly using discrete Fourier transform by means of a computer with small memory.
A strut-and-tie model is introduced in this paper to predict the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns. The validity and applicability of the proposed strut-and-tie model are evaluated by comparison with available experimental data. The model was developed based on visible crack patterns observed on the test specimens. The concrete contribution is integrated into the strut-and-tie model through a concept of equivalent transverse reinforcement. To further validate the model a full-scale non-seismically detailed reinforced concrete column was tested to investigate its seismic behavior. The specimen was tested under the combination of a constant axial load, $0.30f_c{^{\prime}}A_g$ and quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions. Quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions were applied to the specimen until it could not sustain the applied axial load. The analytical results reveal that the strut-and-tie method is capable of modeling to a satisfactory accuracy the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns subjected to reserved cyclic loadings.
Foschi's connector model is used as a basic component in the development of nonlinear analysis programs for timber structures. This paper presents the extension of the model to include the effect of shaft frictional forces. The wood medium is modeled using the Foschi embedment model, while shaft friction is modeled using an elastic Coulomb-type friction model. The initial confining pressure for the case of driven fasteners is accounted for by a lateral shift of the load-embedment curve. The model is used to compute the cyclic response of both driven and inserted fasteners. The results obtained from the cases studied indicate that initial confining pressure and friction do not have a significant effect on the computed hysteretic response, however, they significantly affect the computed amount of fastener withdrawal. This model is particularly well-suited for modeling the hysteretic response of shear walls with moderate fastener withdrawal under lateral cyclic or earthquake loading.
The present experimental study evaluated the seismic performance of six engineered cementitious composite (ECC) columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates under cyclic lateral loading. The ECC columns damaged and crushed in the first stage of cyclic tests were repaired using the ECC with a certain polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and strengthened with flexural and sheer CFRP laminates and then re-assessed under the cyclic loading. The effects of some variables were examined on lateral displacement, energy absorption and dissipation, failure modes, crack patterns, load bearing capacity and plasticity, and the obtained results were compared with those of the first stage of cyclic tests. The results showed that retrofitting the ECC columns can improve their performance, plasticity and load-bearing threshold, delayed the concrete failure, changed the failure modes and increased the energy absorbed by the strengthened columns element by over 50%.
Reliable estimation of compressive as well as tensile in-situ stresses is critical in the design and analysis of underground structures and openings in rocks. Kaiser effect technique, which uses acoustic emission from rock specimens under cyclic load, is well established for the estimation of in-situ compressive stresses. This paper investigates the Kaiser effect on marble specimens under cyclic uniaxial compressive as well as cyclic uniaxial tensile conditions. The tensile behavior was studied by means of Brazilian tests. Each specimen was tested by applying the load in four loading cycles having magnitudes of 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the peak stress. The experimental results confirm the presence of Kaiser effect in marble specimens under both compressive and tensile loading conditions. Kaiser effect was found to be more dominant in the first two loading cycles and started disappearing as the applied stress approached the peak stress, where felicity effect became dominant instead. This behavior was observed to be consistent under both compressive and tensile loading conditions and can be applied for the estimation of in-situ rock stresses as a function of peak rock stress. At a micromechanical level, Kaiser effect is evident when the pre-existing stress is smaller than the crack damage stress and ambiguous when pre-existing stress exceeds the crack damage stress. Upon reaching the crack damage stress, the cracks begin to propagate and coalesce in an unstable manner. Hence acoustic emission observations through Kaiser effect analysis can help to estimate the crack damage stresses reliably thereby improving the efficiency of design parameters.
This study investigated the lateral behavior of monopile embedded in the dry sand through cyclic lateral loading test using a centrifuge test. The sand sample for the experiment was the dry Jumunjin standard sand at 80% relative density and the friction angle of $38^{\circ}$. In the experimental procedure, firstly, it was determined the static lateral bearing capacity by performing the static lateral loading test to decide the cyclic load. This derived static lateral bearing capacity values of 30%, 50%, 80%, 120% were determined as the cyclic lateral load, and the number of cycle was performed 100 times. Through the results, the experiment cyclic p-y curve was calculated, and the cyclic p-y backbone curve by depth was derived using the derived maximum soil resistance point by the load. The initial slope at the same depth was underestimated than API (1987) p-y curves, and the ultimate soil resistance was overestimated than API (1987) p-y curves. In addition, the result of the comparison with the suggested dynamic p-y curve was that the suggested dynamic p-y curve was overestimated than the cyclic p-y backbone curve on the initial slope and soil resistance at the same depth. It is considered that the p-y curve should be applied differently depending on the loading conditions of the pile.
Compared to metal-to-metal tribology, polymer tribology presents further complexity as it is more prone to be influenced by operating conditions. Over the past two decades, progress in the field of wear of polymers has led to the establishment of more refined wear mechanisms. The current paper establishes the link between different load parameters and the wear rate of polymers, based on experimental investigations. A pin-on-plate reciprocating tribometer was used to examine the wear behaviour of polyamide sliding against a steel counterface, under constant and fluctuating loads, in dry conditions. In addition, the influence of controlled imperfections in the polymer surface upon its wear rate were examined, under cyclic and steady loading, in order to better understand surface fatigue wear of polymers. The imposed imperfections consisted of vertical artificial deep crack (slit) perpendicular or parallel to the direction of sliding. The study concludes with the followings findings; in general, wear of polymers shows a significant tendency to the type of applied load. Under cyclic loads, polymers show an increase in wear rate compared to those tested under static loads. Such increase was found to increase with the increase in cyclic load frequency. It is also demonstrated that surface cracks results in higher wear rates, particularly under cyclic loads.
In recent years steel-concrete composite shear walls have been widely used in enormous high-rise buildings. Due to high strength and ductility, enhanced stiffness, stable cycle characteristics and large energy absorption, such walls can be adopted in the auxiliary building; surrounding the reactor containment structure of nuclear power plants to resist lateral forces induced by heavy winds and severe earthquakes. This paper demonstrates a set of nonlinear numerical studies on I-shaped composite steel-concrete shear walls of the nuclear power plants subjected to reverse cyclic loading. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed using ABAQUS by emphasizing on constitutive material modeling and element type to represent the real physical behavior of complex shear wall structures. The analysis escalates with parametric variation in steel thickness sandwiching the stipulated amount of concrete panels. Modeling details of structural components, contact conditions between steel and concrete, associated boundary conditions and constitutive relationships for the cyclic loading are explained. Later, the load versus displacement curves, peak load and ultimate strength values, hysteretic characteristics and deflection profiles are verified with experimental data. The convergence of the numerical outcomes has been discussed to conclude the remarks.
The use of cold-formed steel members is increasing day by day, especially in regions where earthquake effects are intensively experienced. Among cold-formed steel members (CFS), "channel" members are used more than other crosssectional members, especially in buildings or industrial structures. In recent years, several studies have been carried out on the axial load and flexural performance of these members under monotonic loading. In this study, CFS beam-column members were cyclically and monotonically loaded under combined axial load and biaxial bending moments, and their buckling behavior, load bearing capacity, stiffness, ductility, and energy absorption capacity were determined. For this purpose, monotonic and cyclic loading experiments were carried out on 30 CFS channel members at 15 different eccentricities. Then, material properties were determined by axial monotonic tensile and very low cycle fatigue tests for use in numerical studies. From the experimental results, the buckling modes, bearing capacities, ductility, stiffness, and energy absorption capacities of the members were obtained. The characteristics of the members were compared according to the stress state of the lips. According to the data obtained from the displacement transducer placed on the lips and on the back of the web, information about the buckling mode and curvature of the members was obtained. Finally, monotonic, and cyclic loading results were compared to determine the differences in the buckling behavior of the members.

Fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior under cyclic biaxial loading has been investigated using thin-walled tubular specimen with a hole. Two types of biaxial loading system, i.e. cyclic tensile loading with super-imposed static torsional load and cyclic torsional loading with superimposed static tensile load, with various values of the biaxial loading ratio, $\tau$ s/ $\sigma$ max (or $\tau$ max/ $\sigma$s) were employed. Fatigue tests show that fatigue crack near the hole initiates and propagates at 900 and 450 direction to the longitudinal direction of the specimen under cyclic tensile and torsion loading with static biaxial stress, respectively, and the static biaxial stress doesn't have any great influence on fatigue crack initiation and growth direction. Stress analysis near the hole of the specimen shows that the crack around the hole initiates along the plane of maximum tangential stress range. Fatigue crack growth rates were evaluated as functions of equivalent stress intensity factor range, strain energy density factor range and crack tip opening displacement vector, respectively. It is shown that the biaxial mode fatigue crack growth rates can be relatively consistently predicted with these cyclic parameters.
