Suppression of Interfacial Segregation and Control of Microstructure for Improvement of Mechanical Properties of W-Ni-Fe Heavy Alloy (계면편석 억제와 미세구조 조절에 의한 중합금의 기계적성질 향상)

  • In mechanical testing of W-Ni-Pe heavy alloys, the cracks nucleate at W/W interface and propagate through W/ Imatrix interface or through matrix phase together with the cleavage of W grains. The mechanical properties can therefore be improved by control of the interfacial strength and area. In this presentation, some experimental result and techniques on this subject will be reviewed and discussed. The hydrogen embrittlement caused by the hydrogen segregation at interfaces during sintering in an hydrogen atmosphere can be removed by an heat-treattnent in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere. The heat-treatment condition can be estimated by using a diffusion equation for a cylindrical shape. The mechanical properties, in particular the impact property, are degraded by the segregation of non-metallic impurities, such as Sand P. The degradation can be prevented by adding a fourth element, such as La or Ca, active with the non-metallic impurities. The cyclic heat-treatment at usual heat-treattnent tempemture causes the penetration of matrix between W/W grain boundaries and results in remarkable increase in impact energy. This is due to an increase in the area of ductile failure during the impact test. The instability of W/matrix interface casued by addition of Mo or Re can be controlled by using W powders of different size. The increase in the interfacial area in found to be related to the presence of non-equilibrium pure W gmins among W(Mo or Re) solid solution gmins.

A Study on the high temperature oxidation behavior of zirconia plasma coatings on Haselloy X (Zirconala 용사된 Hastelloy X의 고온산화거동)

  • Finned segment, with which are lined inner wall of the turbine combustors, are subject to severe degradation when they are exposed to a hostile environmment at elevated temperature. To protect the finned segment from this environment and to maintain good mechanical properties of components at high temperature, they are preferred to be coated. The most governing factor for the durability of coatings used in the high temperature is the microstructure of coatings; these are splat from, distibution of microcacks, size and distribution of pores, thickness of coating layer, adhesion between coating layer, and oxidation of band coating. In this study, based on the evaluation of the imported finned segment, new finned segment segment was manufactured with optimum plasma spraying parameters, and their properties were examined. Using $ZrO_2(8wt$Y_2O_3)$,/TEX> powder for ceramic coating and 67Ni-22Cr-10Al-0.5Y mixing powder for bond coating, thickness of ceramic and bond coating layer were varied in order to find optimum condition, the results showed that B2T4(bond coating : 100~250$\mu\textrm{m}$, ceramic coating : 250~300$\mu\textrm{m}$) was the best among the specimens tested. Compared to the imported finned segment, B2T4 has better bond strength, hardness, and isothermal and cyclic oxidation resistance.

Effect of CO in Anode Fuel on the Performance of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (수소연료 중 일산화탄소의 고분자전해질 연료전지에 대한 영향)

  • Carbon monoxide(CO) is one of the contamination source in reformed hydrogen fuel with an influence on performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC). The studies of CO injection presented here give information about poisoning and recovery processes. The aim of this research is to investigate cell performance decline due to carbon monoxide impurity in hydrogen. Performance of PEM fuel cell was investigated using current vs. potential experiment, long time(10 hours) test, cyclic feeding test and electrochemical impedance spectra. The concentrations of carbon monoxide were changed up to 10 ppm. Performance degradation due to carbon monoxide contamination in anode fuel was observed at high concentration of carbon monoxide. The CO gas showed influence on the charge transfer reaction. The performance recovery was confirmed in long time test when pure hydrogen was provided for 1 hour after carbon monoxide had been supplied. The result of this study could be used as a basis of various reformation process design and fuel quality determination.

Fatigue Life Prediction of CFRP using Fatigue Progressive Damage Model (피로누적손상을 이용한 직조 CFRP의 피로수명 예측)

  • The strength and fatigue life of Satin and Twill-woven CF/epoxy composite(CFRP) have been investigated. Damage mechanism fatigue method has been used to assess fatigue damage accumulation. It is based on measured residual stiffness and residual strength of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) laminates under cyclic loading. Fatigue damage evolution in composite laminates and predict fatigue life of the laminates were simulated by finite element analysis(FEA) method. The stress analysis was carried out in MSC patran/Nastran. A modified Hashin's failure criterion di rmfjapplied to predict the failure of the experimental data of fatigue life but a Ye-delamination criterion was ignored because of 2D modeling. Almost linear stiffness and strength degradation were observed during most of the fatigue process. These stress distribution data were adopted in the simulation to simulate fatigue behavior and estimate life of the laminates. From the results, the predicted fatigue life is more conservatively estimated than the experimental results.

  • A new flexible TFT backplane structure with improved mechanical reliability is proposed. Amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) thin film transistors based on this structure have been fabricated on a polyimide substrate, and the resultant mechanical durability has been evaluated in a cyclic bending test. The panel can withstand 10,000 bending cycles at a bending radius of 5 mm without any noticeable TFT degradation. After 10K bending cycles, the change of threshold voltage, mobility, sub-threshold slope, and gate leakage current were only -0.22V, -0.13$cm^2$/V-s, -0.05V/decade, and $-3.05{\times}10^{-13}A$, respectively.

Seismic repair of captive-column damage with CFRPs in substandard RC frames

  • The effectiveness of the repair scheme for the damaged captive-columns with CFRPs (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) was investigated in terms of response quantities such as strength, ductility, dissipated energy and stiffness degradation. Two 1/3 scale, one-story one-bay RC (Reinforced Concrete) frames were designed to represent the substandard RC buildings in Turkish building stock. The first one, which is the reference specimen, is the bare frame without infill wall. Partial infill wall with opening was constructed between the columns of the second frame and this caused captive column defect. Severe damage was observed with the concentration of shear cracks in the second specimen columns. Then, the damaged members were repaired by CFRP wrapping and retested. For the three test series, similar reversed cyclic lateral displacement under combined effect of axial load was applied to the top of the columns. Overall response of the bare frame was dominated by flexural cracks. Brittle type of shear failure in the column top ends was observed in the specimen with partial infill wall. It was observed that former capacity of damaged members of the second frame was recovered by the applied repair scheme. Moreover, ultimate displacement capacity of the damaged frame was improved considerably by CFRP wrapping.

Influence of axial load and loading path on the performance of R.C. bridge piers

  • Piers are the most vulnerable part of a bridge structure during an earthquake event. During Kobe earthquake in 1995, several bridge piers of the Hanshin Expressway collapsed for more than 600m of the bridge length. In this paper, the most important results of an experimental and analytical investigation of ten reinforced concrete bridge piers specimens with the same cross section subjected to constant axial (or variable) load and reversed (or one direction) cycling loading are presented. The objective was to investigate the main parameters influencing the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers. It was found that loading history and axial load intensity had a great influence on the performance of piers, especially concerning strength and stiffness degradation as well as the energy dissipation. Controlling these parameters is one of the keys for an ideal seismic performance for a given structure during an eventual seismic event. Numerical models for the tested specimens were developed and analyzed using SeismoStruct software. The analytical results show reasonable agreement with the experimental ones. The analysis not only correctly predicted the stiffness, load, and deformation at the peak, but also captured the post-peak softening as well. The analytical results showed that, in all cases, the ratio, experimental peak strength to the analytical one, was greater than 0.95.

Seismic experiment and analysis of rectangular bottom strengthened steel-concrete composite columns

  • In order to study the working mechanism of rectangular steel-concrete composite columns subjected to compression-bending load and further determine the seismic performance index, a bottom strengthened rectangular steel reinforced concrete (SRC) column with concealed steel plates and a bottom strengthened rectangular concrete filled steel tube (CFST) columns were proposed. Six column models with different configurations were tested under horizontal low cyclic loading. Based on the experiments, the load-bearing capacity, stiffness and degradation process, ductility, hysteretic energy dissipation capacity, and failure characteristics of the models were analyzed. The load-bearing capacity calculation formulas for a normal section and an oblique section of bottom strengthened rectangular steel-concrete composite columns were pesented and a finite element (FE) numerical simulation of the classical specimens was performed. The study shows that the load-bearing capacity, ductility, and seismic energy dissipation capacity of the bottom strengthened rectangular steel-concrete composite columns are significantly improved compared to the conventional rectangular steel-concrete composite columns and the results obtained from the calculation and the FE numerical simulation are in good agreement with those from the experiments. The rectangular steel-concrete composite column with bottom strengthened shows better seismic behavior and higher energy dissipation capacity under suitable constructional requirements and it can be applied to the structure design of high-rise buildings.

Improvement of Electrochemical Characteristics and Study of Deterioration of Aluminum Foil in Organic Electrolytes for EDLC

  • The anodic behavior of aluminum (Al) foils with varying purity, capacitance, and withstand voltage in organic electrolytes was examined for EDLC. The results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) experiments showed that the electrochemical stability improves when Al foil has higher purity, lower capacitance, and higher withstand voltage. To improve the electrochemical stability of EDLC current collectors made of low-purity foil (99.4% Al foil), the foil was modified by chemical etching to reduce its capacitance to $60{\mu}F/cm^2$ and forming to have withstand a voltage of 3 Vf. EDLC cells using the modified Al foil as a current collector were made to 2.7 V with 360 F, and a constant voltage load test was subsequently performed for 2500 hours at high temperature under a rated voltage of 2.7 V. The reliability and stability of the EDLC cell improved when the modified Al foil was used as a current collector. To understand the deterioration process of the Al current collector, standard cells made of conventional Al foil under a constant voltage load test were disassembled, and the surface changes of the foil were measured every 500 hours. The Al foil became increasingly corroded, causing the adhesion between the AC coating layer and the Al foil to weaken, and it was confirmed that partial AC coating layer peeling occurred.

Coupling of nonlinear models for steel-concrete interaction in structural RC joints

  • When strong seismic forces act on reinforced concrete structures, their beam-column connections are very susceptible to damage during the earthquake event. The aim of this numerical work is to evaluate the influence of the internal steel reinforcement array on the nonlinear response of a RC beam-column connection when it is subjected to strong cyclic loading -as a seismic load. For this, two specimens (extracted from an experimental test of 12 RC beam-column connections reported in literature) were modeled in the Finite Element code FEAP considering different stirrup's arrays. In order to evaluate the nonlinear response of the RC beam-column connection, the 2D model takes into account the nonlinear thermodynamic behavior of each component: for concrete, a damage model is used; for steel reinforcement, it is adopted a classical plasticity model; in the case of the steel-concrete bonding, this one is considered perfect without degradation. At the end, we show a comparison between the experimental test's responses and the numerical results, which includes the distribution of shear stresses and damage inside the concrete core of the beam-column connection; in the other hand, the effects on the connection of a low and high state of confinement are analyzed for all cases.
