  • The relative displacement of a piping system installed between isolated and nonisolated structures in a severe earthquake might be larger when without a seismic isolation system. As a result of the relative displacement, the seismic risks of some components in the building could increase. The possibility of an increase in seismic risks is especially high in the crossover piping system in the buildings. Previous studies found that an elbow which could be ruptured by low-cycle ratcheting fatigue is one of the weakest elements. Fatigue curves for elbows were suggested based on component tests. However, it is hard to find a quantitative evaluation of the ultimate state of piping elbows. Generally, the energy dissipation of a solid structure can be calculated from the relation between displacement and force. Therefore, in this study, the ultimate state of the pipe elbow, normally considered as failure of the pipe elbow, is defined as leakage under in-plane cyclic loading tests, and a failure estimation method is proposed using a damage index based on energy dissipation.

  • As of September 2002, there are more than 60 operational permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) stations in South Korea. Their data are being used for a variety of purposes: geodynamics, geodesy, real-time navigation, atmospheric science, and geography. Especially, many of the sites are reference stations for DGPS (Differential GPS). However, there has been no comprehensive and qualitative analysis published to evaluate the data quality. In this study, we present preliminary results of our assessment of the permanent GPS sites in South Korea. We have analyzed the multi-path characteristics of each station using a quality-checking software package called TEQC. Another multipath analysis tool based on post-fit phase residuals was used to check the repeating patterns and the amount of the multipath at each site. The long-term stability of each station was analyzed using the root-mean-square (RMS) error of the estimated site positions for one year, which enabled us to evaluate the mount stability. In addition, the number of cycle slips at each site was derived by TEQC. Based on these series of tests, we compared the stability and data quality of permanent GPS stations in South Korea.

  • Nowadays, new product development (NPD) is one of the most crucial factors for business success. The manufacturing firms cannot afford the resources in the long development cycle and the costly redesigns. Good product planning is crucial to ensure the success of NPD, while the Quality Function deployment (QFD) is an effective tool to help the decision makers to determine appropriate product specifications in the product planning stage. Traditionally, in the QFD, the product specifications are determined by a rather subjective evaluation, which is based on the knowledge and experience of the decision makers. In this paper, the traditional QFD methodology is firstly reviewed. An improved Hybrid Quality Function Deployment (HQFD) [MSOfficel] then presented to tackle the shortcomings of traditional QFD methodologies in determining the engineering characteristics. A structured questionnaire to collect and analyze the customer requirements, a methodology to establish a QFD record base and effective case retrieval, and a model to more objectively determine the target values of engineering characteristics are also described.

  • Building Information Models(BIM) provides rich geometric and attribute information throughout the entire life cycle of a building and infrastructure object, while Geographic Information System(GIS) enables the detail analysis of urban issues based on the geo-spatial information in support of decision-making. The Integration of BIM and GIS data makes it possible to create a digital twin of the land in order to effectively manage smart cities. In the perspective of integrating BIM data into GIS systems, this study performs literature reviews on georeferencing techniques and identifies limitations in carrying out the georeferencing process using attribute information associated with absolute coordinates probided by Industry Foundation Classes(IFC) as a BIM standard. To address these limitations, an automated georeferencing process is proposed as a pilot study to position a IFC model with the Local Coordinate System(LCS) in GIS environments with the Reference Coordinate System(RCS). An evaluation of the proposed approach over a BIM model demonstrates that the proposed method is expected to be a great help for automatically georeferencing complex BIM models in a GIS environment, and thus provides benefits for efficient and reliable BIM and GIS integration in practice.

  • Sensor nodes are easily exposed to malicious attackers by physical attacks. The attacker can generate various attacks using compromised nodes in a sensor network. The false report generating application layers injects the network by the compromised node. If a base station has the injected false report, a false alarm also occurs and unnecessary energy of the node is used. In order to defend the attack, a statistical en-route filtering method is proposed to filter the false report that goes to the base station as soon as possible. A path renewal method, which improves the method, is proposed to maintain a detection ability of the statistical en-route filtering method and to consume balanced energy of the node. In this paper, we proposed the secure path cycle method to consume effective energy for a path renewal. To select the secure path cycle, the base station determines through hop counts and the quantity of report transmission by an evaluation function. In addition, three methods, which are statistical en-route filter, path selection method, and path renewal method, are evaluated with our proposed method for efficient energy use. Therefore, the proposed method keeps the secure path and makes the efficiency of energy consumption high.

  • This study aims at developing the model that is able to detect the compression wave, which is included as a similar situation in incidents, that causes false applicable to the similar character such as incidents in the incident detection model for expressways. In this study, it has been checked whether the number of false alarms is decreased or not by modularizing this model for being able to applicable to other models such as DES and DELOS, etc. which do not perform the compression wave test based on the compression wave test process of APID model which has been being used in the expressway traffic management system currently. The evaluation in this study focuses on the sensitivity of the model and the results analysis is performed classified by each polling cycle. And how well these models are working is evaluated by each polling cycle. In addition to this, the detection rate, the false alarm rate and the average detection time in both the existing models and the model in this study are calcuated. As a result of appling the model in this study, it is found that the false alarm rate is improved through the reasonable decrease in the number of false alarm frequencies and there are not remarkable changes concerning the detection rate and the average detection time. To sum up, it is expected that a good number of improvement effects will be occurred when this model is applied to the actual expressway traffic management system.

  • Power grid techniques are distributed over general power systems ranging from power stations to power transmission, power distribution, and users. To monitor and control the elements and performance of a power system in real time in the extensive area of power generation, power transmission, wide-area monitoring (WAM) and control techniques are required (Sattinger et al. 2007). Also, to efficiently operate a power grid, integrated techniques of information and communication technology are required for the application of communication network and relevant equipment, computing, and system control software. WAM should make a precise power grid measurement of more than once per cycle by time synchronization using GPS. By collecting the measurement values of a power grid from substations located at faraway regions through remote communication, the current status of the entire power grid system can be examined. However, for GPS that is used in general national industries, unexpected dangerous situations have occurred due to its deterioration and jamming. Currently, the power grid is based on a synchronization system using GPS. Thus, interruption of the time synchronization system of the power system due to the failure or abnormal condition of GPS would have enormous effects on each field such as economy, security, and the lives of the public due to the destruction of the synchronization system of the national power grid. Developed countries have an emergency substitute system in preparation for this abnormal situation of GPS. Therefore, in Korea, a system that is used to prepare for the interruption of GPS reception should also be established on a long-term basis; but prior to this, it is required that an evaluation technique for the time synchronization performance of a GPS receiver using an atomic clock within the power grid. In this study, a monitoring system of time synchronization based on GPS at a power grid was implemented, and the results were presented.

  • Annual reports on the ease of doing business, published from the World Bank, measure the regulations of economies that enhance business activity and those that constrain it by the 10 areas of business life-cycle. It then calculates the scores and ranks in each of the areas and in aggregate. The aggregate scores are the summation of the scores in the areas. This means that all the areas have the same weight. As evaluation results can vary greatly by the areas used and their weights, it is possible that the areas emphasized by small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) of Korea are not appropriately reflected in the evaluation results. From the viewpoint of small and medium-sized Korean enterprises, this paper tries to compare the ease of doing business of economies via determining the weights of the 10 areas. Through an AHP-based survey on Korean professors of a business school and SME CEOs, the weights are determined and then applied to the calculation of the aggregate scores and the ranks of the economies. While the changes in the top and bottom ranks are relatively small, some cases of big changes are found in the middle ranks.

  • At present, the ground anchor method is commonly applied to securing the slope stability in Korea. The ground anchor is reported to decrease in tensile load due to aging and environmental influences with time such as corrosion, relaxation, creep and so on. In Korea, the lift-off test is performed for the periodic inspection or cases when the symptoms of deterioration on anchors and the residual tensile load of the anchors is checked. However, the current lift-off test standard (MOLIT, 2010) is not fully specified in details. In this study, the factors affecting the lift-off test were investigated based on the previous research and foreign standards and lift-off tests were performed with consideration for the loading and unloading cycle, load increment method, and tensioning tendon method. Based on the results, this paper proposes improved testing and evaluation procedures of the lift-off test considering the workability and time limits in the field.
