  • Diamond films which have high hardness and thermal conductivity can be used to improve the performance of WC-Co as a cutting tool material. However, it is difficult to get such coatings of good uniformity and adhesiveness due to the surface characteristics of WC-Co. To get better coatings, some techniques, such as the surface treatment of substrate or the formation of interlayer between substrate and diamond film, have been tried. In the present work, the nickel interlayer is formed onto WC-Co by electroless Ni-P plating, which is introduced as a new method, and then diamond film is deposited on the interlayer. Formation and uniformity of three layers, i.e., substrate, electroless plate, and diamond film, and the adhesiveness of interlayers were studied. To investigate the effects of pretreatment on electroless plating, two different methods such as acid treatment and diamond powder treatment were used. The effects of heat treatment of the electroless plated surface on adhesiveness between the substrate and the interlayer were examined. It was found that as the temperature increases, the Ni crystals grow and then result in improved adhesiveness. Diamond film coatings of pure diamond phase were obtained at $800^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that the heat treated electroless Ni-P plating can be effectively used as a interlayer between WC-Co substrate and diamond film.

  • It has been known that the conventional retaining wall system with timber lagging and H pile has several problems such as the irregular gap between H-piles, cutting or adding to standard timber, back fill over first step excavation, and especially break-down accident at the disjoint of wall system. In the practical excavation, these problems may lead to worker's accident and the inefficiency of construction economy. To solve the above problems, a new method using prefabricated retaining wall was proposed and verified. The characteristics of the new method is to replace timber wall as free-sliding steel-lagging and connector. To check its verification and application, laboratory tests such as bending strength, tensile strength, and fatigue strength were carried out. Also, a pilot test in the field and numerical simulations under various ground conditions were performed. From the researches, it is found that the prefabricated retaining wall plate can be superior to the conventional timber lagging plate in the strength. It is also found that the proposed methods can be effective in the reuse of retaining wall plate and safe in the disjoint of wall system. Finally, it is desired that the proposed method will be effective in the reduction of the imported timbers and helpful in the safety of retaining wall construction.

  • A part of used cables, such as electric and communication cables has already been recycled by using simple processing methods. However, it has been found that the main problems in recycling of the used cables are insufficient treatment of fine stranded wires and low recovery of copper by air separation process. It has been shown that copper can be effectively separated from the PE using a solvent treatment method. In the present study, the used communication wires having diameter of 0.4 mm are treated in the mixing solution of toluene and water at $86^{\circ}C$ for about 10 minutes. In the solvent treatment, the copper wires recovered have 10~15mm length, which are much longer than that of 1~2mm length copper wires recovered by air table concentration method used in current recycling plants. The process consisting of cutting, air separation and electrostatic separation would be recommendable for the treatment of mixed cables. In this investigation, fine copper powders can also efficiently be recovered from insulation materials using electrostatic separator at the conditions of 20~50RPM roller speed and 15~30KV high DC power.

  • Purpose: To determine the utility of sonographically guided percutaneous core needle biopsy to diagnose musculoskeletal soft tissue masses. Methods: A prospective study was performed in 55 patients referred for image-guided needle biopsy of primary or recurrent soft tissue masses and bone lesion or suspected solitary metastasis with extraosseous masses. Tissue samples were obtained with a 14-gauge or 18-gauge cutting needle coupled to an automated biopsy device under local anesthesia and sonographic guidance. Statistical analysis was based on 49 biopsies confirmed by successful clinical treatment (11 cases) or surgical resection (38 cases). Results: An accurate diagnosis was obtained in 47 (97%) of 49 biopsies; sensitivity was 95%, and specificity was 100%. The method did not yield sufficient tissue to establish a diagnosis in 6 cases. Considering all 55 biopsies, high-quality specimens were obtained in 87%. There were no serious complications. Conclusions: Sonographically guided core needle biopsy is accurate and safe, in soft tissue masses and bone tumors with extraosseous masses in the appendicular skeleton. In such patients, the sonographically guided procedure is the most prompt and effective method for obtaining tissue samples.

  • The effect of microstructure of WC-Co substrates which have different WC grain sizes from submicron to 5 $\mu$m on the diamond-substrate adhesion strength was investigated. The substrates were pre-treated by two methods : chemical etching with Murakami's solution and subsequently with $H_2SO_4$, and thermal heat-treatment. The adhesion strength was estimated by degree of peeling after Rockwell indentation. Diamond films of 20 $\mu$m thickness deposited on the heat-treated substrates showed an excellent adhesion strength at the load of 100 kg, which ascribed to the large and elongated WC grains. However, the cutting edge of insert was deformed after heat treatment and the surface morphology of heat treated substrate strongly affected on the surface roughness of the deposited diamond films. On the contrary, the diamond film of 10 $\mu$m in thickness on the chemically etched substrates of average WC grain size over 2 $\mu$m showed good adhesion strength enough not to peel-off under a load of 60 kg. Especially, the substrate of average WC grain size over 5 $\mu$m exhibited much improved reliability of adhesion comparing with the substrate of average grain size under 2 $\mu$m. No substrate deformation was observed in this case after the chemical etching, which is more advantageous and more practical in terms of precious machining than the heat treatment case.

  • Due to the rapid process of industrialization the cities of Korea confront changes of climate, destructions of the habitate and decrease of the green. Recently Seoul and other local governments have implemented policies and projects to improve the environmental surroundings. In reality, however, those policies and projects face difficulties in the course of implementation. The fact that there are no concrete regulations and specific legal procedures turns out to be one of the main difficulties. The aim of this study is to present specific plans and methods of wall-planting and to provide basic guidelines for the future direction of wall-planting and offer ideas of facilitating wall-planting. This study is based on questionnaires from specialists of landscape architecture through individual interviews and/or e-mails. The questionnaire is consisted of following 4 sections. 1. Show the experts current regulations and/or legal procedures and ask them improvements and suggestions. 2. Ask them choose matters of the highest priority by using Ricardo's diagram method. 3. Ask them to make a graded list in terms of the location and method of wall-planting. 4. Study the maketability of the wall-planting products currently in circulation. The city of Seoul and the Ministry of Environment recommend that trellis and/or planting inducement structures be installed on the building wall by regulation. The specialists responded to the questionnaire advocate that green wall without trellis should be allowed as green zone. Therefore regulations concerning the wall-planting should be determined specifically according to the characteristics of individual plants and walls. It has been urged that legal aid and social support must be reinforced to establish rules dealing with wall-planting. The respondents also point out that significant cutting down of the tax is far more effective in accelerating the wall-green instead of administrative support. The highest priority in terms of planting has been given to sound-proof wall, retaining wall and building wall. Concerning the maketability of the wall-planting products, panel products are recommended for early-planting and building planting. It has been suggested that the research and study of new materials and species be done in advance.

  • Samples of Hangdeung granite and Berea sandstone containing sliding planes were prepared by saw-cutting and polishing using #100 or #600 grinding powders. Their basic friction angles were then measured directly in direct shear tests and triaxial compression tests, and also in tilt tests, which measure the angles indirectly. Although the angles measured by the direct methods were generally accurate, those measured along certain planes were greatly different from the others depending on the condition of the plane. The tilt tests yielded similar angles regardless of the sliding plane condition or the rock type; however, the error range was relatively wide. Sliding planes polished by the grinding powders yielded more accurate results than those cut by the saw and tested without polishing, as polishing ensured consistent conditions among all the planes. Sliding planes polished using #100 grinding powder yielded better results than polishing with #600 grinding powder. Therefore, the basic friction angles measured along the sliding planes polished using #100 grinding powder, as obtained in direct shear and triaxial compression tests, were the most reliable. The angle could also be measured satisfactorily by tilt testing along sliding planes polished with #100 grinding powder.

  • Recently, various forms of diverging sections in tunnels have been designed as the demand for underground passageway in urban areas increases. Therefore, the complexity of the ventilation system in tunnels with diverging sections requires a ventilation analysis method different from the conventional method for the straight tunnels. None of the domestic and foreign tunnel ventilation design standards specifies the method for the ventilation network analysis, and the numerical analysis methods have been most widely used. This paper aims at reviewing the ventilation network analytical method applicable as the design standard. The proposed method is based on the characteristic equations rather than the numerical analysis. Thanks to the advantages of easy application, the Hardy-Cross method has been widely applied in the fields of mine ventilation and tunnel ventilation. However, limitations with the cutting errors in the Taylor series expansion and the convergence problem mainly caused by the mesh selection algorithm have been reported. Therefore, this paper examines the applicability of the ventilation analysis method for network-type tunnels with the gradient method that can analyze flow rate and pressure simultaneously without the configuration of mesh. A simple ventilation analysis method for network-type tunnels is proposed.
