This studies was carried out to investigate a process of formation for the granulomatous lesions in the liver and the haematological variation with the lapse of time after infection of Capillaria hepatica in dogs. Twelve crossbred puppies, about 3 months of age and 2-3 kg of body weight, were administered with 2,000 Capillaria hepatica infective eggs. Every four puppies was sacrificed on 1 week, 3 weeks and 5 weeks after infection, respectively. Although no marked clinical sign was noticed, total leukocyte values were increased peak on 1 week, and then reduced gradually on 3 weeks and 5 weeks after infection. Absolute differential counts of neutrophils and lymphocytes were significantly increased on 1, 3 and 5 weeks after infection. Absolute differential counts of monocytes and eosinophils were trend to increase during the experimental periods. On grossly findings, liver congestions were observed in all infected puppies, and a few white specks were scattered under liver capsule in one puppy on 3 weeks and two puppies on 5 weeks after infection. On microscopic findings, many fresh larvae were observed in the liver tissues in one puppy on 1 week after infection. A worm was decayed and only a portion of cuticle was shown in one puppy on 3 weeks after infection. Around the central necrotic material, the layers of thick macrophages with a few giant cells and lymphocytes with fibrous connective tissues were consisted the granulomatous lesions on 5 weeks after infection.
A dead male Jeju weasel with clinical signs of severe dehydration and moribund was submitted for the necropsy. Grossly, purple-red ecchymoses were scattered in the surface of the entire lungs. Milky-white mucoid materials occupied in the left bronchial lumens. Histopathologically, an adult worm with thick cuticle layer surrounded by chronic inflammatory cells was embedded in the left caudal lung lobe. Numerous oval or barrel-shaped parasitic eggs with muco-purulent exudates were observed in the dilated bronchus of another section of left caudal lobe. Operculate parasitic eggs showed typical morphologic characteristics such as barrel shape with asymmetry bipolar plugs and thick bi-layered wall. Based on the histopathologic findings and morphological characteristics of parasitic eggs in the pulmonary tissue section, this case was diagnosed as verminous pneumonia associated Eucoleus aerophilus infection in Jeju weasel.
The cuticle of spider's exoskeleton is a hydrophobic and non-adhesive material, but the jumping spiders have the distinctive attachment apparatus for adhesion on smooth dry surface without sticky fluids. We have examined the whole tarsal appendages of the jumping spider, Plexippus setipes with using scanning electron microscope to reveal the fine structural characteristics of the dry adhesion system. All eight legs have the scopulae with a pair of claws on the tip of feet. Each scopula is composed of two groups of setae that are capable of dry adhesion on smooth surface, and the hook structure of the claw is advanced to move on the rough surface. The setae toward the bottom of the tarsal segment are densely covered by numerous setules on the underside which broadened from middle to distal portion. It has been revealed by this research that the contact area of the setule is always a triangular shape, and these cuticular surfaces are connected by the elongated stalks from the underlying setae. It is likely that the nano-scale structures including a triangular depression and a longitudinal groove on each setule could functionate when the spider detach its feet from the substrate.
Apple bitter rot caused by Glomerella cingulata has been known to occur annually on the fruits of previously infected twigs and the trunks. This study was carried out to ensure whether the pathogen overwinters in the form of perithecium or not. Since the acervuli of the pathogen were formed in inoculated apple trees, it would be possible that the pathogen could overwinter on the twigs, Ascigerous stage was found both under the cuticle of the infected trunk and in outer layers of rotted fruits. Therefore, it could be concluded that the pathogen overwintered in the form of perithecium is a primary inoculum in next year. Ascigerous stage of the appfe bitter rot organism was observed for the first time in Korea.

Locations of silicon accumulation in rice leaves and its possible association with resistance to rice blast were investigated by analytical electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. A blast-susceptible cultivar, Jinmi, and partially resistant cultivars, Hwaseong and Suwon345, were grown under a hydroponic culture system with modified Yoshida's nutrient solution. Electron-dense silicon layers were frequently found beneath the cuticle in epidermal cell walls of silicon-treated plants. Increasing levels of silicon were detected in the outer regions of epidermal cell walls. Silicon was present mainly in epidermal cell walls, middle lamella, and Intercellular spaces within subepidermal tissues. Furthermore, silicon was prevalent throughout the leaf surface with relatively small deposition on stomatal guard cells in silicon-treated plants. Force-distance curve measurements revealed relative hardness and smaller adhesion force in silicon-treated plants (18.65 uN) than control plants (28.39 uN). Moreover, force modulation microscopy showed higher mean height values of elastic Images In silicon-treated plants(1.26 V) than in control plants (0.44 V), implying the increased leaf hardness by silicon treatment. These results strongly suggest that silicon-induced cell wall fortification of rice leaves may be closely associated with enhanced host resistance to blast.
Microbial digestion of feed in the rumen involves a sequential attack culminating in the formation of fermentation products and microbial cells that can be utilized by the host animal. Most feeds are protected by a cuticular layer which is in effect a microbial barrier that must be penetrated or circumvented for digestion to proceed. Microorganisms gain access to digestible inner plant tissues through damage to the cuticle, or via natural cell openings (e.g., stomata) and commence digestion from within the feed particles. Primary colonizing bacteria adhere to specific substrates, divide to form sister cells and the resultant microcolonies release soluble substrates which attract additional microorganisms to the digestion site. These newly attracted microorganisms associate with primary colonizers to form complex multi-species consortia. Within the consortia, microorganisms combine their metabolic activities to produce the diversity of enzymes required to digest complex substrates (e.g., cellulose, starch, protein) which comprise plant tissues. Feed characteristics that inhibit the microbial processes of penetration, colonization and consortia formation can have a profound effect on the rate and extent of feed digestion in the rumen. Strategies such as feed processing or plant breeding which are aimed at manipulating feed digestion must be based on an understanding of these basic microbial processes and their concerted roles in feed digestion in the rumen.
Cordyceps militaris (CM) occurring from a fruiting body by a host insect is a kind of mushroom, which is composed of animal host and plant fruit body. CM contains large amounts of useful ingredients including polysaccharides, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, etc. The essential amino acids from CM including cystine, lysine, and methionine can be expected to improve damaged hair treatment as effective ingredients. In this study, the improvement effect of the CM extracts on chemical and physical properties for damaged-hair treatment was investigated. The cysteic acid and cystine monooxide produced by oxidation of cystine were analyzed their chemical structure by FT-IR spectroscopy. It was confirmed that the vibration absorption peak ($1,041cm^{-1}$) of cysteic acid was reduced and increased sulfur content considerably which means meaningful improvement effect on damaged-hair treatment. Apparently, the cuticle morphology of the damaged-hair was improved significantly by treatment with CM extracts. Especially, confocal laser scanning microscope images of the damaged-hair treated with the extract showed highly increased fluorescence intensity which means promising effect in hair treatment. The tensile strength of the damaged hair treated also increased by 168% compared with the damaged hair.
This study aims to propose a method to reduce hair damage after investigating the following: the factors which vary depending on hair treatment conditions; the degree of hair damage in the bleached sample; and an analysis of the effects of a perm on wave formation. To determine the effects of these treatment types, hair bleach was mixed with the hair treatment, and hair damage and formation of permanent waves were examined. Using a scanning electron microscope, in addition, morphological changes were analyzed and the following results were obtained: After mixing natural powder(2.5g) and hair cream(2.5g) and bleaching the mixture, it was compared to the scale structure of untreated hair. When 5g of natural powder was mixed and bleached, a clear layer was observed among cuticle scales, showing the effects of hair treatment. Therefore, this confirms that the effects of hair treatment were most notable when grain powder was mixed with hair cream. Once hair is damaged, it is almost impossible to regain its original state. When chemical agents are used, therefore, it is important to consider the possible hair damage they cause.
This study attempted to determine the effects of fermented green tea extracts on hair by using them in a perm. For this, hair is bleached, and then the fermented green tea extracts and water were supplied to the hair using a mist sprayer. Then the hair was permed, and hair damage was tested. Regarding hair moisture levels and wave formation, specifically, the morphological changes of hair were investigated with the Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). The study results found the following. In terms of wave formation, the fermented green tea extract-based perm was much better than the general perm. In addition, hair bleaching was more serious in the latter. According to analysis on hair moisture using SEM, hair damage was more prevalent in the general perm as well. Therefore, it was confirmed that green tea extract-based perms cause less damage to the cuticle. In other words, the potential of fermented green tea extracts as a hair cosmetics material was discovered. Furthermore, it appears that the study results contribute to the development of low-irritating scalp and hair care products using the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of the fermented green tea extracts.
A 43-year-old Korean woman with billary ascariasis accompanied by cholellthiasis is reported. Her chief complaints were abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. She had the past history of several attacks of abdominal pain in her childhood. ciliary stones were recovered from the left hepatic duct after cholecystectomy, which contained degenerated cuticle or body wall, and numerous eggs of Ascaris lumbriooides. It is strongly suggested that the ciliary stones were formed from the dead Ascmis worm(s). This is a rare case of biliary ascariasis during the recent 5 years in Korea.
