  • Since the centrifugal force acts on the flow in the curved channel, a transverse water surface gradient occurs and the thalweg is biased toward the outer bank. The submerged vanes may be used to solve various engineering problems of the curved channels. In order to analyze the influence of an attack angle and the distance between the vane arrays on the river bed variation and the superelevation in a bend, movable bed hydraulic experiments were conducted in a $90^{\circ}$ curved rectangular channel of a small-size gravel bed. Installing the submerged vanes in the bend increases the maximum scour depth. But if vanes are installed in a uniform obtuse angle, the scour depth may be reduced. If the flow rate in the channel bend with vanes equals to the channel forming discharge, the location of the maximum scour depth moved to the downstream and the superelevation increased. However if the flow rate is smaller than that, the location of the maximum scour depth moved upstream and the superelevation decreased. The channel bed change and the superelevation due to the installation of the submerged vanes have been dependent on the interaction of the attack angle, the flow rate, and the distance between the arrays.

  • The assesment of the safety of ship's transit in a curved narrow channel consists of the maneuvering safety determined by the chance of running aground, the maneuvering difficulty determined by ship's workload, and shiphandler's subjective evaluation. In this study, to examine the correlation between shiphandler's subjective evaluation and the maneuvering safety, the real-time and full-mission shiphandling simulator in the Korea Marine Training & Research Institute(KMTRI) was utilized. On the conning bridge of the shiphandling simulator, 50 experienced masters have conducted the modeled vessel of 60, 000 deadweight tonnage along the designed channel under 3 different environmental conditions. It was possible to assess and analyze theoretically the correlation between the shiphandler's subjective evaluation and maneuvering difficulty under each environmental condition by quantifying the data obtained from the tests. The results are as follows: $\circled1$ As the degree of maneuvering difficulty increases, the shiphandler's subjective evaluation increases in the designed channel under the designed environmental condition. $\circled2$ In the straight area, not the bend of the designed channel, maneuvering difficulty increases sharply under the environmental condition of current and wind coming from the stern.

  • This study investigates the flow characteristics and bed changes with discharge using a two-dimensional numerical model, Nays2DH. The water depth at the outer part of curved channel is formed deeper from the narrow part after passing through the curved part. The point bar is developed in the wide section and water depth is shallow in the inside of the curved section. The flow is concentrated in the outer pater of the meandering section, which leads to the deep water. In the downstream section where the straight line formed, the flow is concentrated at the center of the bed. Alternating deep water and shallow places are generated due to the continuous formation of meandering. These characteristics are formed by the influence of strong two-stream flow in meandering stream. The dimensionless tractive force is also large in the region where the flow velocity is concentrated. However, in the narrow and sharp meandering river reaches, the pattern of bed changes and the spatial distribution patterns of flow velocity and dimensionless tractive force are inconsistent in the narrow and sharp meandered reaches due to the strong secondary flow.

  • Models of cross-sections and channels were made in order to measure seepage losses. Cross-sections were made of sand, sandy clay loam and loam, their thicknesses being 30cm and 40cm, respectively. Flow depths kept in the cross-sections were 4cm, 6cm, 8cm and 10cm. Straight and curved channel models were provided so as to measure seepage losses, when constant water depths maintained at the heads of the channels were 7.3cm and 5.7cm, respectively. The results obtained in this experiment are presented as follows: 1) A cumulative seepage loss per unit length at a point in the channel varies in accordance with time and flow depth. The general equation of cumulative seepage loss may be as follows(Ref. to Table V.25): $$q_{cum}=\int_{o}^aq(a)dt+\int_a^bq(b)dt+\int_b^tq(c)dt$$ 2) In case that the variation of water depth through the channel is slight, the total seepage loss may be computed by applying the following general equation: $$\={q}_{cum}{\cdot}x=\int_o^tq_{cum}\frac{{\partial}x}{{\partial}t}dt$$ 3) Because seepage loss varies considerably according to water depth in case that the variation of flow depth through the channel is great, seepage loss should be computed by taking account of the change of flow depth. 4) The relation between time and traveling distance of water flow may be presented as the following general equation(Ref. to Table V.29): $$x=pt^r$$ 5) The ratios of the seepage losses of the straight channel to the curved channel are 1:1.03 for a flow depth of 7.3cm and 1:1.068 for that of 5.7cm. 6) The ratios of the seepage losses occurring through the bottom to those through the inclined plane in the channel cross-section are 1:2.24 for a water depth of 8cm and 1:2.47 for a depth of 10cm in case that soil-layer is 30cm in thickness. Similarly, those ratios are 1:2.62 and 1:2.93 in case of a soil-layer thickness of 40cm(Ref. to Table V.5).

  • We present an application of the variational multiscale methodology to the computation of concentric annular pipe flow. Isogeometric analysis is utilized for higher order approximation of the solution using Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) functions. The ability of NURBS to exactly represent curved geometries makes NURBS-based isogeometric analysis attractive for the application to the flow through the curved channel.

  • This study sets the goal to improve effectively water quality of stream by complementing the weak points of the gravel contact oxidation process to use the inverted siphon curved channel system in free overfall of serial contact materials. The size of the current system can be diminished by expanding contact time, and the materials' replacement can be made easier when their gap are closed through the filtering boxes of contact materials. This system also has been developed into a construction method in which mixed and serial contact materials can be employed by using just the conventional single contact materials. It was verified the improvement ability of water quality of this system, during the simulation test at Tandong stream in Daejeon. The results of the verification of water quality improvement through several experiments in field were measured as follows : it showed to reduce about the averaged 55~83% higher than 60~75%, the internal planned goal of water quality improvement facilities.

  • Most of the previous models for analysis of shallow water flow assumed the uniform velocity distributions over the flow depth so that they produced incorrect velocity prediction at meandering part due to the ignorance of secondary current. In this study, the vertical velocity profiles in longitudinal and transverse direction were decomposed as the mean and variation components, which resulted in additional dispersion stresses terms in momentum equations. The proposed model were applied at the channels with $30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $270^{\circ}$ bends, and shallow water flow in curved channel was analyzed using dispersion stresses. The dispersion stresses acted as a sink or source in the momentum equations, which caused the transverse convection of momentum to shift from the inner bank to the outer bank.
