The effect of six different curing conditions on compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of volcanic pumice concrete (VPC) and normal concrete (NC) has been studied. The curing conditions include water, air, low temperature ($4^{\circ}C$) and different elevated temperatures of up to $110^{\circ}C$. The curing age varies from 3 days to 91 days. The development in the pulse velocity and the compressive strength is found to be higher in full water curing than the other curing conditions. The reduction of pulse velocity and compressive strength is more in high temperature curing conditions and also more in VPC compared to NC. Curing conditions affect the relationship between pulse velocity and compressive strength of both VPC and NC.
Temperature during concrete curing can be effectively used to predict the early age strength of concrete However, various current methods have limits to provide the temperature data in real time due to harsh working environment including frequent cutting of wires. This paper presents the results of our investigation of an all-in-one Wireless sensor network (WSN) for the management of the curing temperature of in-placed concrete at early curing stages. Also, the network device for transmission can be easily separated from the probe sensor part and reused consistently. The field experiment entailed measuring the curing temperature of concrete using the WSN. After fresh concrete was poured into the formworks, the signals were measured at a 150 m radius from the field office. The signal was acquired for 28 days without any dispersion or interruption at the construction site; therefore, this study confirms the applicability of the proposed system to a construction site.
This study aimed to examine whether heat curing methods of concrete subjected to $-10^{\circ}C$ could be effective by varying the combination of heating cable and surface heat insulations. Three different concrete specimens incorporating 30% fly ash with 50% W/B were fabricated to simulate wall, column and slab members with dimensions of $1600{\times}800{\times}200$ mm for slab, $800{\times}600{\times}200$ mm for wall and $800{\times}800{\times}800$ mm for column. For heat curing combinations, Type-1 specimens applied PE film for slab, plywood for wall and column curing. Type-2 specimens applied double layer bubble sheet (2LB) and heating coil for slab, and 50 mm styrofoam for wall and column curing. Type-3 specimen applied 2LB for slab, electrical heating mat for wall and column inside heating enclosure. The test results revealed that the temperature of Type 1 specimen dropped below $0^{\circ}C$ beginning at 48 hours after placement due to its poor heat insulating capability. Type 2 and 3 specimens maintained a temperature of around $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ after placement due to favorable heat insulating and thermal resistance.
This paper reports the effects of curing temperature and aging on the strength and the modulus of elasticity. In oder to determine the strength and the modulus of elasticity with curing temperature and aging, experimental and analytical methods are adopted. The tests of 480 cylinders are carried out for type I, V and V with 15 percent replacement of fly ash cement concretes, which are cured at isothermal conditions of 10, 23, 35 and 5$0^{\circ}C$. and the concrete cylinders are tested at the ages of 1, 3, 7 and 28 days. According to the experimental results, the concrete subjected to high temperature at early ages attaines higher early-age compressive and splitting tensile strength but eventually attaines lower later-age compressive and splitting tensile strength. Even if modulus of elasticity has the same tendency, the variation of modulus of elasticity with curing temperature is smaller than that of compressive strength. Based on these experimental results, the relationships among compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and splitting tensile strength are proposed considering the effects of curing temperature, aging and cement type.
This study was performed to evaluate the engineering properties of cement mortar brick with loess and fly ash. The unit weight was in the range of $2,068{\sim}2,137\;kgf/m^{3}$ and $1,899{\sim}2,045\;kgf/m^{3}$ in water and dry curing, respectively It was decreased with increasing the loess content. The absorption ratio was in the range of $5.2{\sim}13.1%$ and $8.5{\sim}13.2%$ in water and dry curing, respectively. The compressive strength was decreased with increasing the loess content. The compressive strength of the 193 $kgf/m^{2}$ in water and 188 $kgf/m^{2}$ in dry curing at the curing age 28 days of the binder volume ratio 35% was exceeded in 163 $kgf/m^{2}$ of standard compressive strength about cement bricks. The carbonation depth was in the range of $0.9{\sim}1.4$ mm, $1.2{\sim}3.6$ mm, $1.4{\sim}6.7$ mm and $2.4{\sim}12.5$ mm in dry curing of curing age 14days, 28days, 90days and 360days, respectively.
In this paper, strength development of concrete using blast-furnace slag cement(BSC) and ordinary portland cement(OPC) are discussed under varius W/C and curing temperatures. According to the experimental results, strength development of BSC concrete is lower than that of OPC concrete in low temperature at early age and maturity. In high curing temperature, BSC concrete has higher strength development than that of low temperature regardless of the elapse of age and maturity. BSC has much effect on the strength development of concrete at the condition of mass concrete, hot weather concreting and the concrete products with the steam curing, which is influenced by high temperature.
The maturity concept was adopted to predict the strength of concrete, which was subjected to same temperature conditions and variable curing conditions. Penetration test and compressive test were conducted to measure the initial and final setting time and the compressible strength of concrete specimen, respectively. Also, the temperature and time were recorded at some intervals of time for calculating the maturity. The initial and final setting were delayed as the w/c ratio increased and curing temperature decreased. The activating energy decreased as the w/c ratio increased. The relationships at the relative strength and the maturity were proposed at different w/c ratio for the same temperature curing condition, and these were applied for the variable curing conditions. The results indicated that the difference between the strength of the proposed and the specimen was big at 1 days's age but quite similar after 3 day's age.
After inquiring into physical characteristics of using fly ash and alkali solution, it was found that higher pH density is favorable to strength development at early age and the higher the age is, the higher the compressive strength gets. Also, it was found that when there is more addition of activator, the compressive strength is higher. I was shown that more than atmospheric curing, steam curing was favorable for development of compressive strength. When the temperature of curing temperature was higher, most of the compressive strengths were higher. Thus, based on this study, it was understood that environmental-friendly chemically combined concrete using fly ash and alkali solution can be utilized without using cement.
The production of Portland cement involves maximum use of resources and energy, which leads to destruction of tile ecological environment, raising in serious environmental issues such as acid rain and the greenhouse effect. In order to combat the arising problems associated with Portland cement, it thus is necessary that a non-clinker cement should be developed. In this study, non-clinker cement is produced by blending granulate blast furnace slag with phosphogypsum as main materials, and small amounts of hydrate lime or waste lime as activators. This paper aims to investigate compressive strength according to various condition of mixing ratio, blame, W/C ratio and curing temperature. Compressive strength of non-clinker cement increases continuously according to increase in curing age and blain. Although the compressive strength is fairly comparable to that of OPC in the early curing age, it reaches a higher lever in the later age than that of OPC due to the optimum mixing ratio and the continuous reaction of slag and phosphogypsum. Results obtained from this study have shown that non-clinker cement could be used as a replacement of OPC.
The non-evaporable water and calcium hydroxides were measured by TG/DTA for studying the temperature effect on hydration of concrete mixture. The experimental parameters introduced in this study were the curing temperatures, ages and W/C ratios. The mixing temperature was also controlled to improve the efficiency of experimental work. While the mixture cured at high temperature showed the large quantity of non-evaporable water and calcium hydroxides at early age, the production rate of these hydration products was decreased as increasing the curing age, and the quantity of hydration product became smaller than that of the corresponding mixture cured at lower temperature at later age.
