  • In Katap-ri, South Korea, potteries and roof tiles are excavated with the assumed raw materials. Using NAA, the provenance of these cultural remains was examined among the neighboring others, and the correlation the assumed raw materials with potteries and roof tiles also was examined. From the results of statistics it is concluded that this cultural site is distingushed from others by several trace elements, Ba, Cr, Sc, Yb, Eu, and Rb with 93.2 % accuracy. Also it turned out that the assumed raw materials wasn't raleted to potteries and roof tiles with 96.3% accuracy.

  • The purpose of the present study is to trace the provenance of lead raw materials using the lead isotope ratio of 9 lead glasses excavated from the Sarira hole of Mireuksaji stone pagoda and to determine correlation between them and other lead glasses excavated from the Wanggungri site. The results of chemical analysis of the 9 lead glasses show that they are common lead glass system($PbO-SiO_2$) with respect to the contents of PbO (70 wt.%) and $SiO_2$ (30 wt.%). The lead isotope ratios of them plot to northern Korean peninsula when applied to the distribution map of lead isotopes of East Asia. On the other hand, southern Korean peninsula is verified as the main deposits of the lead ore in the distribution map of lead isotopes of South Korea. With respect to the results, it is notable that the provenance of the 9 lead glasses can be very different depending on the distribution map. In addition, a comparative study between them and the lead glasses excavated from the Wanggungri which was built in the same region and period shows that their lead isotopes are highly correlated.

  • Daejiguksaptapbi (Tapbi) is a memorial stele which is inscribed with personal history of a state preceptor, Daejiguksa Beopkyeong. The Tapbi comprises tortoise-shaped pedestal, dragon top and body stone, and the body stone is remained in 255 pieces by excavation in Samcheonsaji temple site of Seoul. The Tapbi is composed of tuffaceous breccia for the body, coarse-grained pink feldspar granite for the pedestal and fine-grained granite for the top. As a result of geological survey to find a rock provenance of the Tapbi rock, the tuffaceous breccia is found in the banks of Gangwha straits, and the pink feldspar granite and fine-grained granite are found around the temple site in Mt. Bukhansan. Each rock shows similarities to the Tapbi in lithology and mineralogy. Also, geochemical data of major, some trace and rare earth elements verify their cognation in each rock type. It can be interpreted that the provenance of the body stone is distant as Gangwha area, and the provenance of the pedestal and top stones are near the temple site. The results can be utilized to restore the Tapbi by using the same rocks.

  • One piece of Haedong-Tongue(해동통보) minted at 1,102 A.D. was excavated from No.20 wooden coffin, Sinbong-dong, Cheongju. It was analyzed by micro-XRF and ICP and determined the concentrations of ten elements such as Cu, Pb, Sn, Zn, Fe, Mn, Sb, Co, As, Ag and Ni. The measurement of lead isotope ratios was also carried out in order to predict the provenance of raw materials used for minting of Haedong-Tongbo. It was found that Haedong-Tongbo was minted with three compositions of $Cu\;75.5\%,\;Pb\;13.3\%\;and\;Sn\;6.0\%$, which were different from the typical composition of Chosen-Tongbo and Sangpyung-Tongbo used in Chosen dynasty. Lead isotope ratios of Haedong-Tongbo showed that the provenance of lead used for minting of it suggested the possibility to be originated from Southern part of Korea.

  • This study analyze concentration of minor and trace elements on 47 white porcelains excavated from Dudong-ri, Baekryeon-ri, Sachon-ri kilns in Gyeonsangnam-do by NAA(neutron activation analysis) and try to classify the provenance and characteristics according to the analytical result. Each kilns are divided into the group by PCA(principal component analysis) and LDA(linear discrimination analysis) using 17 elements; Ba Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Dy, Eu, Hf, La Lu, Rb, Sc, Sm, Ta, Th, V, Yb. The contribution elements are Dy, Sm, La, Ce, Lu, Sc. And soft and hard white porcelains are similar with the chemical composition of the use materials therefore the difference of the chemical composition not confirmed a cause. The analytical results of the fine(I) and poor(II) quality white porcelains presume the difference of the povenance of clay materials or the poduction process such as difference purify and additive materials.
