Recently, the use of fumigants for pest control of paper cultural heritages are limited because of the high toxicity of fumigants and the production of environment-harmfully compounds. Therefore, many non-chemical methods have been discussed and experimented. And it is recently focused on gamma radiation, which is one of non-chemical methods, for pest control of paper cultural heritage in Korea. In this paper, we carried out a gamma ray irradiation of papers including Hanji, copy paper, filter paper and then analyzed a physical properties and optical properties of paper sample to estimate the effect of gamma ray irradiation on paper properties. In result, gamma radiation have adverse effect on a physical properties and optical properties of paper, especially Hanji. Therefore, we have to carefully consider about using of gamma ray for pest control of paper cultural heritages.

This study is about the preservation of wooden buildings as cultural properties. I got the idea for preservation and repair of cultural properties of wooden buildings by watching the process of repairing them in Japan. The Japanese have been endeavored to restoring old wooden buildings to their original forms for more than a hundred years. The idea to change decayed materials into new materials or the new approach to the process of restoration used to be in conflict with the concept of 'Authenticity'--the criteria for evaluation of the value of cultural properties, based on the Western of thinking, established by UNESCO. Since 'Nara Conference on Authenticity', held in 1994 in Nara, however, the concept of 'Authenticity' has changed, and the peculiarity of certain cultural properties of the wooden buildings and their diversity of culture have now begun to be recognized by UNESCO. This is a crucial change for the study of preservation, repair and restoration of cultural properties of wooden buildings. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to look closely at the process of change of the concept 'Authenticity' and find a better method for preservation of cultural properties of wooden buildings.

출토된 매장문화재의 소장관리책임은 문화재보호법 제3644호에 따라 국립박물관에 있다. 이러한 문화재는 연간 10,000여점 씩이나 폭증하고 있고 이 숫자는 앞으로 더욱 증가할 전망이다. 한편 국립박물관의 보관시설은 이미 포화상태를 넘은 상황이며, 따라서 출토문화재는 열악한 시설과 인력이 태부족한 대학박물관 등에 위탁 관리되는 형편이라서 부실보관 등 원초적인 문제가 야기되고 있다. 더 큰 문제점은 이들 문화재가 과학적인 보존처리 및 관리의 보호를 받지 못한다는 점인데 그 이유는 보존과학자가 국립박물관에 5명이며 독립부서조차 없는 실정이고, 전국적으로는 20여명밖에 없기 때문이다. 이러한 출토문화재의 보존관리 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 새로운 제도 및 기구(가칭: 매장문화재 통합보존소)가 시급히 마련되어야 하며, 가장 효과적인 방안으로는 과학적인 수장시설의 설치와 이를 관리할 수 있는 전문인력(보존과학자)으로 구성된 기구의 설립이 절실하므로 이를 제안하는 바이다.

In this paper we examine cultural properties of the North Korea from 'the law of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on Protection of Cultural Property". This law was adopted the Resolution of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of DPR of Korea in 1994. For our study, some other laws or rules established after the end of Japanese colonial occupation (1910-1945) in North Korea were examined. The policy on protection and conservation of cultural property in North Korea seems to have taken place a relatively rapid. The purpose of this law is to carry out the policy with a view to contributing to establishment of strict system and order for protection and management of cultural property, to their preservation in original state, to their proper inheritance and development, and to enhancement of national pride and confidence among the people. This law consists of 6 chapters (52 articles): (1) Fundamentals of the law on protection of cultural property, (2) Archaeological excavation and collection of cultural relics, (3) Evaluation and registration of cultural property, (4) Preservation and management of cultural property, (5) Restoration of cultural property, and (6) Guidance and control of cultural property protection. Nevertheless, it is difficult to find the evidence of efforts to exploit the cultural properties from an academic point of view in North Korea since the late 1980s.

야외 석조문화재는 다른 문화재에 비해 양적인 면에서나 규모 면에서의 한계로 인해 많은 인력을 필요로 하는 작업으로 보존처리 회사가 많은 부분을 담당하고 있다. 이 연구에서는 서울지역 관악구에 위치하는 낙성대 삼층석탑을 대상으로 실시한 보존처리 사례를 소개하고자 한다. 이를 위해 석조문화재의 보존 상태와 훼손 현황을 살펴보고 보존처리 사용 재료 및 방법에 대해서 정리하였다. 낙성대 삼층석탑과 같이 도심에 위치하는 석조문화재의 표면오염은 지역적인 특징이 나타나게 되며 이에 따라 보존처리 기법의 적용이 차별화되어 이루어지게 된다. 향후 박물관 소장 야외 석조문화재 뿐만 아니라 서울지역 석조문화재의 보존처리에 참고자료로써 활용되기를 기대한다.
