The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of the location and the layout of Donghwa temple(桐華寺) in Kyungbuk Province from feng-shui perspective. Feng-shui is a traditional geographic thought in China and Korea. It is necessary to understand feng-shui in order to understand Korean landscape and cultural geography. Feng-shui had had a tremendous impact on Korean landscape through selective buildings of cities, settlements, houses, monuments, temples, pagodas, and so on. In this study, I interpret the geomantic characteristics of Dinghwa temple in Kyungbuk Province. The results of this study are as follow. 1) Donghwa temple is carrying the mountain on the back and belting the water in front. The mountains which encircle the auspicious place are accordance with the feng-shui theory. The watercourse which flows the temple is suitable. The feng-shui spot is located at the foot of the mountain with surrounding mountains and a watercourse in front. 2) Many feng-shui texts discuss the types of surrounding mountain in detail and morphologically describe them with certain auspicious objects. In case of Donghwa temple, it can be compared to a phoenix carrying eggs in the bosom. This is a morphological marker for the description of configulation features of Donghwa temple. In the case of Donghwa temple, we can observe geomantic landscape for the purpose of fulfilling the geomantic harmony of the temple. Also the impact of feng-shui on vegetation is identified in Donghwa temple. 3) For the management of good feng-shui condition, and for the maintaining the harmony between the building layout and surrounding landform, some proposals are suggested.
This study is re-creational experiment of Goryeo gold-painted decoration based on the research of the gold remaining and gold painting technique on the two pieces of Goryeo gold-painted celadon and the three pieces of Chinese gold-painted porcelain on North Song period which ones have been owned by National Museum of Korea since 2007. For the observation of glue state and color developing ability, four kinds of agglutinative agent and gold powder were mixed over the porcelain sherds, then gradually fired from $100^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. Visual effect and ideal temperature were measured. Among of them, oil and glue showed the best results in glue state and color developing ability. Through those results, the entire Goryeo engraved celadon were reproduced in modern facilities. Oil and glue were gold-painted over the glaze then it was fired at the ideal temperature 700 to $800^{\circ}C$. For observation the binding condition, the gold-painting cross section was looked by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). As the result, oil and glue did not make much difference in Agglutinative agent, but gold was good, the color developing ability, however, in the case of oil, the edge of gold is curled because of its interfacial tension, and it is not dried well at room temperature so the working property is not as good as the glue. Glue more effective in terms of work efficiency, but color developing ability to fall slightly in this experiment were able to see through.
The purpose of this study is to find the reasonable plan for the restoration method through the practical repair of excavated costume. The minimal repair only without adding the physical force as far as possible after investigating the state of excavated costume has been progressed in case of excavated costume since it is already degraded and weak due to the characteristics of organic matter at the moment when it is excavated. Moreover, it has been restored as the following course; The restoration has been applied according to the state of excavated costume with the maximum stability by classifying items capable of being restored considering the fabric state of excavated costume. The drawn thread from the weak in strength and the refined thread of the Juasa(simple gauze) or the light degraded silk thread has been used in case of thread for restoration. The cotton fabrics has been used in the fabric of cellulose system, the Juasa or the silk has been used in the silk depending on the kind of fabric in connection with the support fabric, some parts have been dyed with Alnus firma fruit and the persimmon, has been repaired by using the dyed fabric with the clove for the purpose of mothproof-antibacterial treatment. The method to repair has been carried out by classifying according to the state of damage and the way of formation of costume. The needlework method suitable for the part and state of damage by using the basting, the broad-stitching, backstitch, the blind stitch and the hemming stitch in connection with the needlework method for restoration.
Volcanic eruptions alone may lead to serious natural disasters, but the associated release of water from a caldera lake may be equally damaging. There is both historical and geological evidence of the past eruptions of Mt. Baekdusan, and the volcano, which has not erupted for over 100 years, has recently shown signs of reawakening. Action is required if we are to limit the social, political, cultural, and economic damage of any future eruption. This study aims to identify the area that would be inundated following a volcanic flood from the Cheon-Ji caldera lake that lies within Mt. Baekdusan. A scenario-based numerical analysis was performed to generate a flood hydrograph, and the parameters required were selected following a consideration of historical records from other volcanoes. The amount of water at the outer rim as a function of time was used as an upper boundary condition for the downstream routing process for a period of 10 days. Data from the USGS were used to generate a DEM with a resolution of 100 m, and remotely sensed satellite data from the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) were used to show land cover and use. The simulation was generated using the software FLO-2D and was superposed on the remotely sensed map. The results show that the inundation area would cover about 80% of the urban area near Erdaobaihezhen assuming a 10 m/hr collapse rate, and 98% of the area would be flooded assuming a 100 m/hr collapse rate.
Narrative has broad domains. So it is related to the everything man faces in his daily life and also performed in various modes. Narrative is revealed through all media including a character, which is also applied to plastic art. And narrative objects formed beyond the differences in media aid forms of expression are commonly based on a language. The study on such objects which created a new conceit of narratology can be said to be a spiritual trend by which to understand the world and man from the viewpoint of a 'story'. Plastic art took high interest in narrative in the same period as the rise of postmodernist art in the latter half of the 20th century, which was also applied to sculpture. The researcher, therefore, investigated through the history of sculpture in the 20th century the process in which narrative was denied under the value system of modernism and reappeared with the quickening of postmodernism. And as a result this period could be briefly characterized by 'return to figure' and 'reappearance of narrative'. The is, such flow means that late sculpture converted its center of interest from simple geometric abstract forms to irregular, figurative images. The researcher chose as the subject of his study the work of Louise Bourgeois, who was judged to have performed narrative positively and successfully among a great number of performed narrative positively and successfully among a great number of postmodernist sculptors who adopted it as their own strategy of expression. It has independent domain and characteristics and clearly reveals narrative and content-centered characteristics, which are commonly discovered in postmodernist sculpture. The researcher could more concretely and definitely understand the characteristics of narrative through figurative images by analyzing the sample work. The researcher wanted to call your attention to the fact that the sculpture in the late 20th century contained narrative commonly and uniformly despite being characterized by various expressions and modes. And the focused on highlighting the fact that the narrative was more effectively revealed through figurative images of human body and simultaneously analyzing the formalizing process and structure for narrative. Besides he wanted to argue that the position of narrative defining the characteristics of sculpture should be valued more justly. Also, such acceptance of narrative, which is discovered in the sculpture, will have to be understood as the characteristics of the period reflecting the cultural aspect of the present time.
This study examined the condition of degraded plastic artifacts and conducted materials assessments for conservation treatment. The properties and bond characteristics of five types of adhesives(EVA, PVAc, Cyanoacrylate) were evaluated to select the adhesive most suitable for conservation treatment. The degradation of plastic artifacts caused cracks, peelings, and surface warping. According to the FT-IR analysis, the synthetic resin used in the artifact was estimated to EVA type. The properties of the adhesives were evaluated through acidity, and hardness measurements. The results showed that acidity varies with the type of adhesive, and that the hardness of PVAc was higher than those of EVA. On comparing the bond characteristics of the samples after artificial degradation, it was found that PVAc and Cyanoacrylate increased the chromaticity and hardness of the samples, while EVA was the most stable with relatively little change. Thus, EVA was confirmed to be the most suitable materials for conservation treatment of degraded plastic artifacts. In this study, as the experiment of treatment materials based on actual artifact, it is expected that it could be used a basis research for conservation treatment of plastic artifacts.
The removal efficiency of COD and the production of ${\delta}-aminolevulinic$ acid (ALA) were concurrently investigated for both purifying the soybean curd wastewater of high BOD and utilizing the wastewater as a renewable substrate of ALA production using Rhodobacter capsulatus KK-10. Its wastewater was a favorable media for the growth of photosynthetic bacteria in terms of its environmental characteristics having COD/BOD rate of 0.98, ratio of BOD : N : P=100 : 6 : 4, BOD/N ratio of 17.2, lactic acid of 1,080 ppm. Its COD value wastewater was decreased to 94% and dry cell weight was approached to about 1.2 g/l after cultivation of the photosynthetic bacteria for 4 days. By the addition of 15 mM levulinic acid (LA) into the wastewater at the middle log phase of cell growth, the amount of ALA secreted was 55 mg/l. The ALA production was considerably increased to 114 mg/l under the cultural condition of 15 mM supplementations of glycine and succinate with LA at the same period. Furthermore the maximum ALA production of 120 mg/l and COD removal efficiency of 92% were accomplished in the soybean curd wastewater enriched with one addition of 15 mM LA and three serial additions 15 mM ALA precursors.
Growth characteristics and aromatic constituents of wild and domesticated Codonopsis lanceolata grown in different regions were investigated to find the best cultural condition for quality improvement. The results were as followings: Air temperature of wild region was lower to 4~8 and soil temperature was also lower to 3 compared with domesticated region. Soil of wild region had about three times richer organic matter with lower pH. Chromosome number of wild and domestcated species was 2n=16, ovary number was 3, but seed number of wild species was 132 vs domesticated showing 62. Recovery yield of wild species grown wild region had 0.55%, besides that, the wild species grown in domesticated region had 0.34. But the domesticated species in wild and domesticated regions was the same as 0.28. Inorganic element contents of domesticated region showed much higher than that of wild region. Major aromatic constituents were specified in wild Codonopsis lanceolata as dimethyl benzene, 3-ethyl-5-2-(ethylbutyl)-octadecane, benzaldehyde, 14, 14-dimethyl-hexadecanoate, methylhexadecenoate of which was not detected in domesticated species.
To identify the differences on plant growth and yield of two rice cultivars among direct water-seeding methods broadcasting on flooded paddy surface(BF), drilling on flooded paddy surface(DF), and puddled-soil drill seeding(PD) under markedly different weather condition between 1995 and 1996. The mean air temperature for duration from May to June, early growth stage of rice in 1995 was lower $1{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ than that in normal or 1996. In 1995 the respiratory consumption index during panicle formation stage and early ripening stage was higher than those of in 1996 or normal year. Number of seedling stand among the methods of direct seeding rice appeared slightly higher in order of BF>DF>PD. Properly in Nonganbyeo, the number of seedling stand was much low in 1995 compared with in 1996. The leaf area index and shoot dry weight at early growth stage of rice plant and culm length at mature in 1995 were larger in direct water seeding rice than those of machanical transplanting rice, but in 1996. Faster ripening speed and shorter ripening period of rice crop appeared in 1996 compared to in 1995. It was due to higher growing degree-days, sunshine hours and solar radiation during rice growing season in 1996. Dongjinbyeo rice showed higher yield than Nonganbyeo which had lower ripened grains especially in 1995.
