  • To better understand the morphological variation for Perilla crop in different areas of China, we studied the morphological variation in 87 accessions (84 cultivated var. frutescens and three cultivated var. crispa) from high latitude (Northeast China) and middle latitude (North and Northwest China) areas of China by examining seven quantitative and 10 qualitative characters. Analysis of the morphological variation determined that there was significant morphological differences in five quantitative traits between cultivated var. frutescens and cultivated var. crispa, including effective number of branches (QN2), number of internodes (QN3), number of branches (QN4), length of the largest inflorescence (QN5), and days from germination to flowering (QN7). However, two quantitative traits-plant height and number of florets of the largest inflorescence-did not show any significant differences between cultivated var. frutescens and cultivated var. crispa. In addition, significant differences for six quantitative traits were found between the accessions of cultivated var. frutescens originating from high and middle latitude areas in China, which included QN2, QN3, QN5, number of florets of the largest inflorescence (QN6), and QN7. Principal components analysis (PCA) identified five quantitative characters [plant height (QN1), QN2, QN3, QN4, QN7] and six qualitative characters [fragrance of plant (QL1), color of reverse side of leaf (QL3), degree of pubescence (QL5), color of flower (QL6), shape of leaf (QL7), and hardness of seed (QL10)] that contributed to the positive direction on the first axis. The other quantitative and qualitative characters contributed to the negative direction on the first axis. Most accessions of cultivated var. frutescens and cultivated var. crispa were clearly separated by the first axis. In addition, most accessions of cultivated var. frutescens are from high latitude and middle latitude areas that were clearly separated by the first axis, except for several accessions. The findings from this study will provide useful information towards understanding the morphological variation of Perilla crop according to geographical distribution in high and middle latitude regions of China.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the economic value of organic wheat production using gelatin·chitin microorganisms in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju city. The soil condition of experiment field was clay loam Jisan series. The organically cultivated fields were sprayed gelatin and chitin degrading bacteria. The test was performed at conventionally cultivated field and organically cultivated field. Emergence of weed on organically cultivated field was significantly higher than conventionally cultivated field which sprayed herbicide before seeding. Weed emergence have a critical impact on grain yield. Occurrence of diseases and insect pests were higher than conventionally cultivated fields. In 2019, the amount of lodging in conventionally cultivated field were higher than conventionally cultivated field. In 2020, lodging and wet injury were occur in both field. Comparing yield element between organically and conventionally cultivated experimental area, grain yield in organically cultivated field was shown slightly higher amount than conventionally cultivated field. However in the actual yield of 2019, organically cultivated field shows 20% deceased yield because of overgrown weed. In 2020, weed emergence and yellow mosaic virus by wet injury cause 30% decease in the grain yield in organically cultivated field. Content of protein, carbohydrates, ash, water and fat in the grain were not different significance. In 2019, net incomes of conventionally cultivated wheat was 461,031 won/0.1 ha while organically cultivated wheat was 443,437 won/0.1 ha. In the rate of income, conventionally cultivated field was 83.0% as against organically cultivated field (73.3%). In 2020, net incomes of organically cultivated wheat was 437,812 won/0.1 ha while conventionally cultivated wheat was 418,281 won/0.1 ha. In the rate of income, conventionally cultivated field was 81.6% as against organically cultivated field (73.0%).

  • Hydroponic cultivation is a technology of raising crops without use of soil. Generally farmers use the method of DFT(deep flow technology)to grow leafy or fruity vegetables; however, systematic and scientific researches are insufficient on this matter. This study investigated the possibility of cultivating Chinese cabbage steadily year long by using the method of DFT. Chinese cabbage was cultivated hydroponically with and without Ge addition, used to prepare kimchi, and the chemical and microbiological characteristics of kimchi were compared. The basic hydroponic cultivation condition was as follows: 30 days after seeding, the raised seeds were moved to a hydroponic bed and given underground water for 3 days so the roots grow normally Standard nutrient solution was provided and the early electric conductivity concentration was maintained between 1.5∼2.5 thickness. The temperature of the solution was maintained between 10 ∼25$^{\circ}C$ to allow the growth of Chinese cabbage. When soil-cultivated, organically cultivated and hydroponically cultivated Chinese cabbages were compared, hydroponically cultivated cabbages were smaller in size and showed less ability to build up and fold leaves into a head, but showed better quality than organically cultivated cabbages. The contents of protein and fat showed no significant differences. The contents of water. Ca, P, Fe, Vitamin A and Niacin were higher in control and Ge-added cabbages compared with soil-grown cabbage. There was no difference between soil-cultivated Chinese cabbage kimchi and hydroponically cultivated Chinese cabbage kimchi.

  • It has been ascertained by a few researchers that soil conditions under which the rice plants were cultivated have some effects upon the root formation of the rice plants. But, much is not known about the root formation of the rice plants cultivated in the saline paddy fields. The goal of the present investigation is to study morphological effects of the soil salinity on the development of the rice root system. The following results were obtained: 1. Under the conditions of higher soil salinity, root systems developed well at surface soil, however, root systems developed well and distributed evenly through surface and sub-soil at the saline fields where soil salinity was lower. 2. The rice plants cultivated in the higher soil salinity form less crown roots than the rice plants which cultivated at the lower soil salinity. 3. As for the formation of the stunted roots, it was found out that relatively rice plant cultivated in higher soil salinity forms more stunted roots than the rice plants cultivated in lower soil salinity. 4. The crown root cultivated in the higher soil salinity forms more lateral roots per unit langth than the root cultivated in lower soil salinity. 5. As for the root hair formation, the crown root cultivated in higher soil salinity bears less haired epidermis and shorter root hairs than the root cultivated in lower soil salinity.

  • Heavy metals may cause trouble(s) in human body. For consideration of the safety of crude drugs cultivated in Korea, we selected some medicinal plants and soils from cultivated site and estimated their heavy metal contents by inductively coupled argon plasma spectrometry (ICAP). Among heavy metals tested, the highest level of Cu and Zn were shown in plants cultivated in Kyung Ki; the highest level of Fe in those in Youngnam and the highest level of Mg and Mn in those in Youngdong. The heavy metal content s were as low as to be permeasible at least for the medicinal plants we selected. There were no significant correlations between heavy metal contents of soils and cultivated medicinal plants.

  • The nutritional quality and physiological activity of cultivated hoelen from 13 months to 24 months were examined to compare with natural hoelen. General compositions of hoelen were as follows re spectively; crude protein 1.80~2.50%, crude fat 0.68~1.23%, crude ash 0.12~0.43%, crude fiber 6.30~7.14%, nitrogen free extract 89.25~90.44%. The major free sugar was glucose, and the content of 13 months cultivated hoelen was higher than any other cultivated hoelen. The major fatty acids of hoelen were linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid. The ratio of unsaturated fatty acids was 62.62~77.96% and the content was higher in cultivated hoelen than in natural hoelen. The contents of amino acid were high in the order of tyrosine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and serine, and increased as the day of cultivation became longer. The contents of mineral components were higher in the order of Ca, K, Mg and the contents of Na and Ca were higher in natural hoelen than in cultivated hoelen. The contents of pachymic acid and dehydropachymic acid was similar in the natural and cultivated hoelen. On the results of antimicrobial test the ethanol extract showed a stronger effect than water extract, and had an excellent antimicrobial activity on Micrococcus luteus and Escherichia coli. The ethanol extract of hoelen showed comparatively strong electron donating ability. The ethanol extract of hoelen showed a high inhibition activity on the growth of lung cancer, ovary cancer, skin cancer, central nerve cancer and rectum cancer, especially the activity of 19 months cultivated hoelen was the highest. On the above results of nutritional quality and physiological activity of hoelen, it is supposed that the picking date of cultivated hoelen was suitable over than 19 months.

  • This research studied the utilization of the bed log wastes as a papermaking grade pulp. Five different bed log samples from shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes (Berk.) Sing) cultivation were collected by the cultivating periods of 1 to 5 years. The wood chemical composition and the characteristics of kraft pulping of each sample were investigated. The results of chemical composition showed that the rate of carbohydrate (glucose and xylose) content in sapwood was decreased as the cultivation period was increased. In heartwood, there was no significant difference. The screening yield of non-cultivated bed log from kraft pulping was higher than that of cultivated one, but the reject of cultivated one, especially for 5 year-cultivated, was lower than non-cultivated bed log. The fiber length and width was continuously decreased as the cultivation period was increased. Therefore, the freeness of the pulp from the cultivated bed log was sharply decreased comparing to non-cultivated due to the fiber cutting and the increased fine content. The dry strengths were increased according to the increasing addition level of bed log kraft pulp to KOCC and non-cultivated wood pulp. From the overall results, the pulp from 5 years cultivated bed log can be reasonably used if it is mixed with long fiber pulp for advantages such as reducing beating time.
