Effects of Activation of Gluteus Maximus and Abdominal Muscle using EMG Biofeedback on Lumbosacral and Tibiocalcaneal Angles in Standing Position

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of activation of gluteus maximus (Gmax) and abdominal muscle using EMG biofeedback on lumbosacral and tibiocalcaneal angles in standing position. Methods: Fourteen healthy subjects with normal feet participated in the present study. Electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback using visual cue was used to activate the external oblique (EO) and Gmax. The lumbosacral and tibiocalcalcaneal angles were measured by electronic goniometers. All the subjects were instructed to activate the Gmax and EO monitoring increasing amounts of the muscle activities in each muscle. The lumbosacral and tibiocalcaneal angles were collected in three trials during resting and activation of each muscle using EMG biofeedback in standing position. The mean value of three trials was used in the data analysis. A paired-t test was used to compare the lumbosacral and tibiocalcaneal angles between resting and activation of the Gmax and EO using EMG biofeedback. Results: The lumbosacral and tibiocalcaneal angles were significantly less in the resting compared to activation using EMG biofeedback (p<0.05). Conclusion: The activaition of Gmax and abdominal muscles using EMG biofeedback play role to control the pronation of subtalar joint during the weight-bearing.

Efficient Individualization Method of HRTFs Using Critical-band Based Spectral Cue Control

  • Recently, 3-D audio technologies are commonly implemented through headphones. A major problem of the headphone-based 3-D audio is in-the-head localization, which occurs due to the inaccurate Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF). Since the individual measurements of HRTFs are impractical, there have been several researches for HRTF customization. In this paper, an efficient method of customizing HRTFs for the sound externalization is proposed. Firstly, it is determined which part will be customized in HRTF through psychoacoustical experiments. Then, the method controlling spectral notches and envelopes to provide individual localization cues are described. Since the proposed method is based on a critical-band rate, the structure is much simpler than that of previous studies, but still effective. The performance was evaluated through a series of subjective tests, and the results confirmed that the customized HRTF using proposed method could replace the measured individual HRTF successfully.

Acoustic analysis of English lexical stress produced by Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese-Chinese speakers

  • Stressed vowels in English are usually produced using longer duration, higher pitch, and greater intensity than unstressed vowels. However, many English as a foreign language (EFL) learners have difficulty producing English lexical stress because their mother tongues do not have such features. In order to investigate if certain non-native English speakers (Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese-Chinese native speakers) are able to produce English lexical stress in a native-like manner, speech samples were extracted from the L2 learners' corpus known as AESOP (the Asian English Speech cOrpus Project). Sixteen disyllabic words were analyzed in terms of the ratio of duration, pitch, and intensity. The results demonstrate that non-native English speakers are able to produce English stress in a similar way to native English speakers, and all speakers (both native and non-native) show a tendency to use duration as the strongest cue in producing stress. The results also show that the duration ratio of native English speakers was significantly higher than that of non-native speakers, indicating that native speakers produce a bigger difference in duration between stressed and unstressed vowels.

Automatic Directional-gain Control for Binaural Hearing Aids using Geomagnetic Sensors (지자기 센서를 이용한 양이 보청기의 방향성 이득 조절 연구)

  • Binaural hearing aids with a voice transmitter have been widely used to enhance sound quality in noisy environment. However, this system has a limitation on sound-source localization. In this study, we investigated automatic directional-gain control method using geomagnetic sensors to provide directional information to binaural hearing aid user. The loudness gains of two hearing aids were differently controlled based on the directional information between a speaker position and a viewing direction of hearing aids user. This relative directional information was measured by two geomagnetic sensors on hearing aids user and a speaker. The results showed that the loudness gains were accurately controlled and could provide directional information based on the cue of interaural level differences.

  • Ubiquitination is a post translational modification which mostly links with proteasome dependent protein degradation. This process has been known to play pivotal roles in the number of biological events including apoptosis, cell signaling, transcription and translation. Although the process of ubiquitination has been studied extensively, the mechanism of polyubiquitination by multi protein E3 ubiquitin ligase, SCF complex remains elusive. In the present study, we identified UbcH5a as a novel stimulating factor for poly-ubiquitination catalyzed by $SCF^{hFBH1}$ using biochemical fractionations and MALDI-TOF. Moreover, we showed that recombinant UbcH5a and Cdc34 synergistically stimulate $SCF^{hFBH1}$ catalyzed polyubiquitination in vitro. These data may provide an important cue to understand the mechanism how the SCF complex efficiently polyubiquitinates target substrates.

Relationship of the Ambiguous Idiom Comprehension between Language Ability and Perspective-taking Ability in School-aged Children (학령기 아동의 언어 및 조망수용능력과 중의적 관용어 이해 간 관계)

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the difference across children's grades in the ambiguous idiom comprehension, the relation with the ambiguous idiom comprehension and language, perspective-taking ability, and what the factors which can influence to comprehend the ambiguous idioms is. 70 elementary school students from 1st grade to 6th grade participated in this study. They were classified with 3 groups, A(1st-2nd grade), B(3rd-4th), C(5th-6th) group and tested in the ambiguous idiom comprehension, receptive vocabulary, problem-solving and perspective-taking. Results of this study are followed. First, there was a significant difference in three groups in the ambiguous idiom comprehension task. And there was significant difference between A group and B, C but not between B and C. Second, in relation with the ambiguous idiom and language ability, perspective-taking ability, there was positive relation with the ambiguous idiom comprehension and them. Finally, the factors which can influence to comprehend the ambiguous idioms is the receptive vocabulary ability, cue-assumption and resolution-inference ability in problem-solving. And the 3 factors explain 65.3% of ambiguous idiom comprehension ability.

Content Analysis of Fashion Magazine Advertisement (패션잡지광고의 내용분석)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the information cues in fashion magazine advertisement in 2008. A total of 368 ads executed in fashion magazine in 2008 were analyzed by number of cues, type of information, magazine type and ad size. The results show that information cues in magazine ads were remarkably decreased compare to the previous studies. Only 36.1% of the advertisements include more than 1 information cues. The results of the study also demonstrate that the advertisements in Woman Sense has the most much information cues. Interestingly, the smaller ad size includes the more information cues in all of ads.

Causal Relation Extraction Using Cue Phrases and Lexical Pair Probabilities (단서 구문과 어휘 쌍 확률을 이용한 인과관계 추출)

  • 현재의 질의응답 시스템은 TREC(Text Retrieval Conference) 질의집합에 대해 최대 80% 정도의 응답 성공률을 보이고 있다. 하지만 질의 유형에 다라 성능의 많은 차이가 있으며, 인과관계에 대한 질의에 대해서는 매우 낮은 응답 성공률을 보이고 있다. 본 연구는 인접한 두 문장 혹은 두 문장 혹은 두 명사구 사이에 존재하는 인과관계를 추출하고자 한다. 기존의 명사구 간 인과관계 추출 연구에서는 인과관계 단서구문과 두 명사구의 의미를 주요한 정보로 사용하였으나, 사전 미등록어가 사용되었을 때 올바른 선택을 하기 어려웠다. 또한, 학습 코퍼스에 대한 인과관계 부착과정이 선행되어야 하며, 다량의 학습자료를 사용하기가 어려웠다. 본 연구에서는 인과관계 명사구 쌍에서 추출된 어휘 쌍을 기존의 단서구문과 같이 사용하는 방법을 제안한다. 인과관계 분류를 위해 나이브 베이즈 분류기를 사용하였으며, 비지도식 학습과정을 사용하였다. 제안된 분류 모델은 기존의 분류 모델과 달리 사전 미등록어에 의한 성능 저하가 없으며, 학습 코퍼스의 인과관계 분류 작업이 선행될 필요 없다. 문장 내 명사구간의 인과관계 추출 실험 결과 79.07%의 정확도를 얻었다. 이러한 결과는 단서구문과 명사구 의미를 이용한 방법에 비해 6.32% 향상된 결과이며, 지도식 학습방식을 통해 얻은 방법과 유사한 결과이다. 또한 제안된 학습 및 분류 모델은 문장간의 인과관계 추출에도 적용가능하며, 한국어에서 인접한 두 문장간의 인과관계 추출 실험에서 74.68%의 정확도를 보였다.

Intonational Characteristics of Korean Focus Realization by American Learners of Korean

  • The informative or important entities in utterances are focused and the focused items are usually accompanied by changes in phonetic manifestation. Phonetic realizations triggered by focus include changes of tonal contours as well as segmental strengthening. Focus in Korean is characterized by new phrase initiation, dephrasing, and initial tone contour with an enlarged pitch range in addition to segmentally lengthened initial segment. Focusing on the prosodic cues which play an important role in delivering the speakers' intention, this study aims to find out what intonational characteristics of Korean focus are realized by English learners of Korean. The English learners are divided into two groups according to their fluency in Korean, and the differences in focus realization between each group are discussed. Furthermore, the phonological and phonetic realizations of focus by English learners of Korean are compared to those by Korean native speakers. The results of this study yields two suggestions for Korean intonation education of L2 learners. First, the comparison between the two speaker groups can give better understanding in how and why the Korean intonation of English speakers is different from that of Koreans. Second, each phonological and phonetic characteristic of focus realization can weigh differently and its realization provides a criterion for evaluation of L2 Korean proficiency.

The Effects of the Congruence between Cosmetic Advertising Image and Self-Image on Consumer Attitudes (화장품 광고이미지와 자아이미지의 일치성이 소비자 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • For the highly involved and emotional product, such as cosmetic product, the consumer focuses on the information about the symbolic meaning of a product. As a continuum, cosmetic advertising frequently requires a celebrity and/or cue since it provides identification between customer and cosmetic. Although many studies have examined the effectiveness of the congruence between brand image and self-image, there are little research regarding the congruence between advertising image and self image. The objective of this study is to examine the attitudinal effectiveness of the congruence between cosmetic advertising image and self-image. For the experiment, 2(ad type: rational vs emotional) factorial designs were performed. A total of 240 undergraduate female students participated in the experiment. The results of the study are as follows. First, the congruence had a significantly positive influence on advertising attitude, but not on brand attitude. Second, the type of cosmetic advertising caused differences in attitudinal persuasiveness affected by the congruence.
