  • VA-LCDs is widely used for recent LCD productions owing to good viewing angle and high contrast. To apply for VA-LCDs, we have synthesized novel homeotropic alignment materials, which all generated high pretilt angles ($9^{\circ}$). The thermal stabilities of them were observed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Transmittances of the NLC cell used the new alignment material were not changed before and after thermal annealing at $120^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. In this work, the synthesis and alignment properties of new homeotropic alignment materials will be reported.

  • Here we report a photo polymerization-induced hybrid alignment of a nematic liquid crystal cell which can be applied for a roll to roll fabrication process. Predominant polymerization in the vicinity of UV incident front induced a diffusion of monomers toward front slide and anisotropic polymer network was formed parallel to the polarization direction of the UV light. This induced planar alignment of liquid crystals at the front slide. Simultaneously, homeotropic alignment was induced at the bottom slide as the polymers are phase-separated from a bottom slide.

  • We propose a soft-lithographic patterning method for producing a multi-domain liquid crystal (LC) alignment. The LC alignment polyimide layers are periodically patterned in the pixel boundaries by a micromolding-in-capillaries method. In our structure, the initially homeotropic LC orientations in the pixel areas are changed to axially symmetric LC domains due to the symmetric pretilt of LC molecules on the pixel boundaries.

  • This paper reports our observation that the addition of nanoparticles in the negative dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal (LC) cell can exhibit the properties of vertical alignment without using alignment layers. The electro-optical properties of this nanoparticles-induced vertical alignment in the LC cell are very similar to the conventional homeotropic LC cell with alignment layers. This technique can be used to fabricate a flexible LC display demanding low temperature process

  • In this paper, we investigated the liquid crystal(LC) alignment and generation of pretilt angle by using photo-alignment techniques on two kinds of polyimide(Pl) surface. It was found that the uniform alignment for nematic(N) LC is obtained in a cell with slanted UV light irradiation on PI surface without side-chain. We successfully observed that the pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 3.3 degrees in a cell with an incidence angle of 70 degrees on PI surface without side chain. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecular and the polymer.

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. It was found that monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The NLC pretilt angles generated are about $3^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates, However, the pretilt angle are at about $1.7^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. Also, EO characteristics of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer are almost the same as that of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on glass. However, the transmittances of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer is less than that with a rubbed PI surface based on glass.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a-C:H thin film by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system for 30 sec under 30W rf power at a gas pressure of 1.4*10$\^$-1/ torr. A high pretilt angle of about 5 by ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the ion beam alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of 250$^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of NLC was observed above annealing temperature of 300$^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high LC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the ion beam alignment method on the a-C:H thin film by PECVD method as working gas at 30W rf bias condition can be achieved.

  • We demonstrate the vertical alignment of liquid crystal on $a-SiO_x$ film surface using the ion beam exposure. Liquid crystal can be aligned vertically by the rotational oblique evaporation of $a-SiO_x$ film. However, the electro-optic switching behavior of liquid crystal along random directions results in disclination lines. We found that we can achieve highly uniform alignment of liquid crystal without disclination lines by using the ion beam exposure. We found from XRD and XPS data that the vertical alignment can be achieved when x approaches 1.5 at the $a-SiO_x$ film surface. We have shown that the pretilt angle can be controlled by changing ion beam parameters, such as the ion beam energy, the angle of incidence, and the exposure time. We found that whether liquid crystals can be aligned vertically or homogeneously on $a-SiO_x$ film can be predicted simply by measuring the change in optical transmittance by deposition of $a-SiO_x$ thin film layers. We also have shown that a liquid crystal cell aligned vertically by the ion beam exposure exhibits the voltage-transmittance curve similar to that of a rubbed polyimide cell.

  • The display that provides information to us through the visual sense is a very important information transmission means by intuitively transmitting information, and the liquid crystal display (LCD) is the most widely used information transmission display. In this paper, we studied solvent assisted micromolding as an alternative for the rubbing that is essential to align the liquid crystals in LCD and successfully aligned the liquid crystal molecules by constructing the nanostructures on conventional polyimide alignment layer. When generating the nanostructures on the polyimide film, there was a competitive correlation between the dissolution effect of the polymer by the solvent and the capillary effect of the polyimide molecules into the nanostructures of the mold depending on the process temperature. It was possible to form nanostructures with high step by deriving the optimum temperature. These nanostructures were able to align the liquid crystal molecules uniformly and demonstrated that they could form a desirable pretilt angle.

  • Injection time of liquid crystal (LC) by capillary action in a vertically aligned (VA) nematic LC cell takes longer than that in a homogeneously aligned (HA) LC cell because Miesowicz viscosity in the former is bigger than that in the latter. To reduce liquid crystal injection time in the VA cell, we applied vertical electric field while injecting so that the orientation of LC molecules is changed from vertical alignment to homogeneous alignment. Consequently, the injection speed is improved by 25 % when compared with the cell without an applied field.
