Homeotropic Alignment Effect of a Nematic Liquid Crystal on Oblique Deposited SiOx Thin-film with e-beam Evaporation

  • In this study, liquid crystal(LC) aligning capabilities for homeotropic alignment on the $SiO_x$ thin film by electron beam evaporation method were investigated. Also, the control of pretilt angles and thermal stabilities of the nematic liquid crystal(NLC) treated on $SiO_x$ thin film were investigated. A high pretilt angle of about $86.5^{\circ}$ was obtained, and also the suitable pretilt angle of the NLC on the $SiO_x$ thin film at $10{\sim}50nm$ thickness with e-beam evaporation can be achieved. The uniform LC alignment and good thermal stabilities on the $SiO_x$ thin film surfaces with electron beam evaporation can be achieved. It is considered that the LC alignment on the $SiO_x$ thin film by electron beam evaporation is attributed to elastic interaction between LC molecules and micro-grooves at the $SiO_x$ thin film surface created by evaporation.

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on two kinds of polyimide (PI) surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The generated NLC pretilt angles on the pre-imidized type PI are about $3.8^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method with thin plastic substrates, However, the pretilt angle measured at about $2.8^{\circ}$ lower on the polyamic acid type PI than by pre-imidized type PI surface with thin polymer film. The tilt angle increases as increasing curring temperature for making polyimide layer using polyamic acid type PI. It was concluded that pretilt angle in the polyimide surface is attributable to the increasing of imide rato.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment capability by the Ultraviolet (UV) alignment method on a a-C:H thin -film , and investigated electro-optical performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic (TN)- liquid crystal display (LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. A good LC alignment by UV irradiation on a a-C:H thin -film surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. The good electro-optical (EO)characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface for 1min.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of the SiC (Silicon Carbide) thin film. The SiC thin film exhibits good chemical and thermal stability. The good thermal and chemical stability makes SiC an attractive candidate for electronic applications. A vertical alignment of nematic liquid crystal by ion beam exposure on the SiC thin film surface was achieved. The about $87^{\circ}$ of stable pretilt angle was achieved at the range from $30^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$ of incident angle. The good LC alignment is main-tained by the ion beam alignment method on the SiC thin film surface at high annealing temperatures up to 300.

  • We studied nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film deposited $45^{\circ}$ oblique by rf magnetic sputtering system. Pretilt angle and thermal stability characteristic as well as NLC alignment effect were investigated. A uniform liquid crystal alignment effect on the $SiO_x$ thin film was achieved and pretilt angle was about $90^{\circ}$. The thermal stability of the $SiO_x$ thin film was sustained by $200^{\circ}$.

  • Recently, it is widely studied to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using ion-beam exposure. Because conventional rubbing method has some problems such as defects from dust and electrostatic charges during rubbing process. Therefore rubbing-free techniques like ion-beam method are strongly required. We studied LC alignment by controlling ion-beam energy density and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic LC on the polyimide surface. In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) on PI surface.

  • We present the structural, optical, and electrical properties of amorphous silicon suboxide (a-$SiO_x$) films grown on indium tin oxide glass substrates with a radio frequency magnetron technique from a polycrystalline silicon oxide target using ambient Ar. For different substrate-target distances (d = 8 cm and 10 cm), the deposition temperature effects were systematically studied. For d = 8cm, oxygen content in a-$SiO_x$ decreased with dissociation of oxygen onto the silicon oxide matrix; temperature increased due to enlargement of kinetic energy. For d = 10 cm, however, the oxygen content had a minimum between $150^{\circ}\;and\;200^{\circ}$. Using simple optical measurements, we can predict a preferred orientation of liquid crystal molecules on a-$SiO_x$ thin film. At higher oxygen content (x > 1.6), liquid crystal molecules on an inorganic liquid crystal alignment layer of a-$SiO_x$ showed homogeneous alignment; however, in the lower case (x < 1.6), liquid crystals showed homeotropic alignment.

  • LCD 배향막으로 응용하기 위하여 광반응성 polyvinylcinnamate 필름 위에서 액정 분자들의 배향에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 선편광 UV를 polyvinylcinnamate 필름에 노광하면 선택적인 광반응에 의하여 필름 내에 이방성이 형성되고, 필름 표면에 인접한 액정 분자는 고분자와 분자간 상호작용으로 고분자 배향 방향과 동일한 방향으로 늘어선다. 광배향막을 사용한 액정 셀의 열 및 빛에 대한 안정성은 배향막에 UV를 다시 노광하고 열을 가한 후 유도된 액정 배향 변화를 측정하여 조사하였다. 선편광 UV를 여러번 노광한 필름의 경우 처음 노광 방향에 관계없이 최종으로 노광한 편광 UV의 방향에 따라 액정 배향이 유도되었다.

  • The effect of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on a homeotropic polyimide (PI) surface induced by ion beam (IB) irradiation and rubbing process was studied. LC alignment was not affected by IB irradiation with an exposure time of 10 s, and an IB irradiation with an exposure time of 60 s more effectively oriented the LCs on the PI layer than the rubbing process. It was assumed that the LC alignment depended on the C-O bonds created from the C=O bonds on the PI surface broken by IB irradiation after an exposure time of 60 s, which resulted in a strong surface energy that transformed the homeotropic LC alignment to homogeneous states.

  • In this study, we investigated the Pretilt ang1e generation in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) by using the transcription, alignment on polyimide(Pl) surfaces. That the uniform alignment of NLC is observed by microphotograph textures in LC cells on Pl surface. We obtained that the pretilt angle of NLC are generated about 3.6$^{\circ}$on Pl surface. It is considered that the LC alignment by transcription alignment method is attributed to memory effect of LC on Pl surface.
