  • The effects of immersion time in the liquid nitrogen on the behavior of aluminum alloys used for the hydrogen storage tank of auto-mobile at cryogenic temperature were investigated. With increasing immersion time in the liquid nitrogen, the elongation of AI 5083 alloy at cryogenic temperature decreased because of non-uniform fracture of precipitates on the grain boundary, and the serration also occurred because of discontinuous slip due to rapid decreasing of the specific heat. The mechanical properties of AI 6061 alloy at cryogenic temperature were characterized by uniformed yield strength, tensile strength and elongation regardless of the immersion time in the liquid nitrogen. These mechanical properties of aluminum alloys at cryogenic temperature were interpreted by the strength of grain boundary and the slip deformation behavior.

  • As underground caverns have many advantages such as safety and operation, they can also be used for gas storage purpose. When liquefied gas is stored underground, the cryogenic temperature of the gas affects the stability of the storage cavern. In order to store the liquefied gas successfully, it is essential to estimate the exact temperature distribution of the rock mass around the caverns. The main purpose of this study is the development of theoretical solution to be able to estimate the temperature distribution around storage caverns and the assessment of the solution. In this study, a theoretical solution and a conceptual model for estimating two and three dimensional temperature distribution around the storage caverns are suggested. Based on the multi-dimensional transient heat transfer theory, the theoretical solution is successfully derived by assuming the caverns shape as simplified geometry. In order to assess the theoretical solution, by performing numerical experiments with this multi-dimensional model, the temperature distribution of the theoretical solution is compared with that of numerical analysis. Furthermore, the effects of the caverns size are investigated.

  • Polyurethane foam insulation required for storing and transporting cryogenic liquefied gas is already widely used as a thermal insulation material for commercial LNG carriers and onshore due to its stable price and high insulation performance. These polyurethane foams are reported to have different mechanical performance depending on the density, and the density parameter is determined depending on the amount of the blowing agent. In this study, density-dependent polyurethane foam was fabricated by adjusting the amount of blowing agent. The mechanical properties of polyurethane foam were analyzed in the room temperature and cryogenic temperature range of -163℃ at 1.5 mm/min, which is a quasi-static load range, and the cells were observed through microstructure analysis. The characteristics of linear elasticity, plateau, and densification, which are quasi-static mechanical behaviors of polyurethane foam, were shown, and the correlation between density and mechanical properties in a cryogenic environment was confirmed. The correlation between mechanical behavior and cell size was also analyzed through SEM morphology analysis. Polyurethane foam with a density of 180 kg/m3 had a density about twice as high as that of a polyurethane foam with a density of 96 kg/m3, but yield strength was about 51% higher and cell size was about 9.5% smaller.

  • The demand for research on materials with excellent cryogenic strength and ductility has been increasing, particularly for applications such as liquid hydrogen (20 K) storage tanks. To effectively utilize liquid hydrogen, a system capable of maintaining and operating at 20 K is essential. Therefore, preliminary research and verification of the cooling system are crucial. In this study, a heat transfer analysis was conducted on a cooling system to meet the cryogenic environment requirements for cryogenic hydrogen chamber, which are conducted at liquid helium temperatures (4 K). The cooling mechanism in a helium cooling system was examined using numerical analysis. The numerical cooling trends were compared with experimentally obtained cooling results. The good agreement between numerical and experimental results suggests that the numerical approach developed in this study is applicable over a wide range of cryogenic systems.

  • With the tightening of environmental regulations (i.e., IMO Tier III), natural gas (NG) has been spotlighted as an eco-friendly fuel with few air pollutants other than nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx). For reasons of economic efficiency, it is mainly stored and transported in a liquid state at $-163^{\circ}C$, which is a cryogenic temperature, using a liquefied gas storage tank. Accordingly, it is necessary to reduce the boil-off gas (BOG) occurrence due to the heat flow according to the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the storage tank. Therefore, in this study, a BOG measurement test on an independent-type storage tank made up of SUS304L was carried out. The test results showed the tendency for BOG occurrence according to the temperature under different filling ratios.

  • Korea government is trying to supply liquid hydrogen from another country to domestic The research for liquid hydrogen transportation and liquefaction plant of hydrogen underway for several years, and empirical research is also planned in the future. Along with the development of liquid hydrogen transport ship/liquefaction plant technology, the development of liquid hydrogen reception base technology must be carried out. In this study, a concept level liquid hydrogen receiving terminal is constructed based on the process of the LNG receiving terminal. Based on this, a study is conducted on the development of analysis technology for the amount of BOG (pipe, tank) generated during cooldown and unloading in the liquid hydrogen unloading line (loading arm to storage tank). The research results are intended to be used as basic data for the design and liquid hydrogen receiving terminal in the future.

  • Safety valve used in LNG/LNG-FPSO ships is a high value valve, and it plays an important role in maintaining a fixed level of pressure by emitting LNG gas out of pipes in LNG piping system under the cryogenic and high-pressure condition when the pressure of the system connected with the LNG storage tank and pipes reaches over the set pressure. The structural stability is required for the inner pressure and thermal load because of the cryogenic and high-pressure condition, and a reliability of the safety valve is necessary for impact and deformation by opening the valve. But, the safety valve, which plays a key role for a safety of the transport and storage system, is depended on imports for over 90%, and in domestic production, the design of the valve is performed on the basis of experiences of the works without quantitative analysis for the inner operation characteristics and structural stability of the valve. In this study, impact velocity is calculated by theoretical analysis for obtaining the structural stability of the guide according to the impact load by opening the valve. The shape of the guide and the diaphragm for satisfying the structural stability are suggested and verified by using a thermal-structural analysis.

  • STS304L of membrane structure has been used for a LNG storage tank and has exposed long time under the cryogenic temperature. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the mechanical properties of base and used materials for STS304L of membrane. The tensile and high cycle fatigue tests were investigated for STS304L of membrane used over 20 years at room temperature and $-162^{\circ}C$. In addition, the test of base STS304L was performed in order to compare with used material properties. The chemical composition and phase change were investigated from EDS and XRD. From results of tensile test, yield and ultimate tensile strengths of used STS304L are smaller than those of base STS304L. S-N curves were obtained from fatigue tests at both temperatures. Also, P-S-N curves were presented with statistical method recommend by JSME-S002. Fractography was conducted for analysis of fracture mechanisms.

  • This paper analyzes the behaviors of corrugated membrane under the cryogenic liquid pressure and thermal loading using the FEM analysis program MARC. The FEM calculations were carried out on the basis of measured data of Technigaz membrane. It is very important to know the concentration levels and distributions of stress in the corrugated membrane. A quarter of the membrane sheet in place of the whole membrane was simulated because of its geometric symmetricity. The calculated results of the concentrated stress showed that the maximum stress occurs at the knot parts and at the root corner radius of the corrugations. The FEM calculated results indicated that the ring knot membrane which was developed in this study showed uniformly distributed stress and the lowest stress levels in the cross knot area in comparison with other two membranes. These results are very important to optimize the shape and improve the safety of membrane structure.
