The Kyongsang Basin is the most representative Cretaceous basin in the Korean Peninsula where extensive crustal deformation and non-marine sedimentation took place in the early Cretaceous period. The lithology of the basement of the basin and adjacent areas is comprised of mainly Precambrian gneiss complex and Mesozoic granite intrusions. We have carried out magnetotelluric (MT) surveys to investigate the deep geoelectric structure around the Kyongsang Basin. The MT data were collected in the frequency range from 0.00042 to 320 Hz at 24 sites along a profile across the northern part of Kyongsang Basin. The results of MT inversion show that the thickness of sediments is estimated about 3 km to 9 km and the depth to base of granite intrusion is about 20 km. A remarkable discovery in this study is the highly conductive layer beneath the basin, having the resistivity of 1 ohm-m to 30 ohm-m and the thickness of about 3 km to 4 km or more. Although we are not able to reveal the nature of this layer, the result of this study could provide some basic information with respect to the formation process and deposit environment of the proto-Kyongsang Basin.

This study analyzed the distribution of fluvial landforms, fault-related geomorphic features and lineaments around the area of Ungchon-Ungsang in the Dongrae Fault, and discusses the charateristics of geomorphic development based on those. As a result, the NE-SW lineaments are predominantly developed in many numbers within the study area, and the NW-SE or N-S secondary lineaments are developed induced by multiple deformation with the Yangsan Fault. Geomorphologically, the early tectonic history of the Ungchon-Ungsang basin is largely divided into three stages ; 1) the Tertiary fault activity and formation of fracture zone, 2) development of erosional basin, 3) local crustal movements and development of fault-related topography. It is assumed that alluvial fans, deflected channel and stream piracy were formed by local tectonic movements related to faultings during the Quaternary.
On November 15, 2017, a Mw 5.4 Pohang Earthquake occurred at about 4 km hypocenter in the Heunghae area, and caused great damage to Pohang city, Korea. In the Heunghae area, which is the central part of the Pohang Basin, the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup and the Late Cretaceous to Early Paleogene Bulguksa igneous rocks as basement rocks and the Neogene Yeonil Group as the fillings of the Pohang Basin, are distributed. In this paper, structural and geological researches on the crustal deformations (folds, faults, joints) in the Pohang Basin and the coseismic ground deformations (sand volcanoes, ground cracks, pup-up structures) of Pohang Earthquake were carried out, and the deformation history of the Pohang Basin and characteristics of the coseismic ground deformations were considered. The crustal deformations were formed through at least five deformation stages before the Quaternary faulting: forming stages of the normal-slip (Gokgang fault) faults which strike (N)NE and dip at high angles, and the high-angle joints of E-W trend regionally recognized in Yeonil Group and the faults (sub)parallel to them, and the conjugate normal-slip faults (Heunghae fault and Hyeongsan fault) which strike E-W and dip at middle or low angles and the accompanying E-W folds, and the conjugate strike-slip faults dipped at high angles in which the (N)NW and E-W (NE) striking fault sets show the (reverse) sinistral and dextral strike-slips, respectively, and the conjugate reverse-slip faults in which the NNE and NNW striking fault sets dip at middle angles and the accompanying N-S folds. Sand volcanoes often exhibit linear arrangements (sub)parallel to ground cracks in the coseismic ground deformations. The N-S or (N)NE trending pop-up structures and ground cracks and E-W or (W)NW trending ground were formed by the reverse-slip movement of the earthquake source fault and the accompanying buckling folding of its hanging wall due to the maximum horizontal stress of the Pohang Earthquake source. These structural activities occurred extensively in the Heunghae area, which is at the hanging wall of the earthquake source fault, and caused enormous property damages here.

Changes of atmospheric pressures cause short- and long-term crustal deformations and thus become error sources in the site positions estimated from space geodesy equipments. In this study, we computed daily displacements due to the atmospheric pressure loading (ATML) at the 14 permanent GPS sites operated by National Geographic Information Institute. And the 10-year GPS data collected at those stations were processed to create a continuous time series of the height estimate. Then, we corrected for the ATML from the GPS height time series to see if the correction changes the site velocity and improves the precision of the time series. While the precision improved by about 4% on average, the velocity change was not significant at all. We also investigated the overall characteristics of the ATML in the southern Korean peninsula by computing the ATML effects at the inland grid points with a $0.5^{\circ}{\times}0.5^{\circ}$ spatial resolution. We found that ATML displacements show annual signals and those signals can be fitted with sinusoidal functions. The amplitudes were in the range of 3-4 mm, and they were higher at higher latitudes and lower at the costal area.
The Miwon-Boeun area in the central and northern part of Okcheon metamorphic zone, Korea, is composed of Okcheon Supergroup and Mesozoic Cheongju and Boeun granitoids which intruded it. The Okcheon Supergroup consists mainly of quartzite (Midongsan Formation), meta-calcareous rocks (Daehyangsan Formation, Hwajeonri Formation), meta-psammitic rocks (Unkyori Formation), meta-politic rocks (Munjuri Formation), meta-conglomeratic rocks (Hwanggangni Formation) in the study area, showing a zonal distribution of NE trend. Its' general trend is locally changed into NS to EW trend in and around high-angle fault of NS or NW trend. This study focused on deformation history of the Okcheon Supergroup, suggesting that the geological structure was formed at least by four phases of deformation. (1) The first phase of deformation occurred under ductile shear deformation of top-to-the southeast movement, forming sheath fold or A-type fold, asymmetric isoclinal fold, NW-SE trending stretching lineation. (2) The second phase of deformation took place under compression of NW-SE direction, forming subhorizontal, tight upright fold of M trend in the earlier phase, and formed semi-brittle thrust fault (Guryongsan Thrust Fault) of top-to-the southeast movement and associated snake-head fold in the later phase. (3) The third phase of deformation formed subhorizontal, open recumbent fold through gravitational or extensional collapses which might be generated from crustal thickening and gravitational instability. (4) The fourth phase of deformation formed moderately plunging, steeply inclined kink fold related to high-angle faulting, being closely connected with the local change of NE-trending regional foliation into NS to EW direction of strike in the vicinity of the high-angle fault.
The Janggunbong area(this study area) at the central-south part in the North Sobaegsan Massif, Korea, consists mainly of Precambrian(Wonnam and Yulri Formations)-Paleozoic [Joseon Supergroup(Jangsan Quarzite, Dueumri Formation and Janggum Limestone) and Pyeongan Group(Jaesan and Dongsugok Formations)] metasedimentary rocks and Mesozoic granitoid(Chunyang granite.) This study is to interpret geological structure of the North Sobaegsan Massif in the Jang-gunbong area by analysing rock-structure and microstructure of the constituent rocks. It indicates that its geological structure was formed at least by four phases of deformation after the formation of gneissosity(S0) in the Wonnam Formation and bedding plane(S0) in the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks. The first phase deformation(D1) formed tight isoclinal fold(F1). Its axial plane(S1) strikes east-west and steeply dips north. Its axis (L1) subhorizontally plunges east-west. The second phase deformation(D2), which was related to ductile shear deformation, formed stretching lineation(L2) and shear foliation(S2). The sense of the shear movement indicates dextral strike-slip shearing(top-to-the east shearing). The third phase deformation(D3) formed open inclined fold(F3). Its axial plane(S3) strikes east-west and moderately or gently dips north. Its axis(L3) subhorizontally plunges east-west. The F3 fold reoriented the original north-dipping S1 foliation and D2 shear sense into south-dipping S1 foliation(top-to-the west shear sense on this foliation) at its a limb. The four phase of deformation(D4) formed asymmetric-type open inclined fold(F4) of NE-vergence with NW striking axial plane(S4) and NW-NNW plunging axis(L4). The F4 fold partly reoriented pre-D4 structural elements with east-west trend into those with north-south trend. Such reorientation is recognized mainly in the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks.

The F4 fold partly reoriented pre-D4 structural elements with east-west trend into those with north-south trend. Such reorientaion is recognized mainly in the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks.
Metamorphic evolution of the Ogcheon metamorphic belt has been studied by many investigators for the past few decades. P-T conditions of the Ogcheon metamorphic belt were estimated as 4.2-9.4 kbar and $490-630^{\circ}C$, corresponding to the medium-pressure type. In addition, the clockwise P-T-t path suggests a crustal-thickening event in association with the formation of thrust nappes. However, some details on deformation and orogeny of the Ogcheon metamorphic belt have been ambiguous yet. Although the metamorphic age has been also equivocal, recent isotopic studies strongly suggest that the peak metamorphism in the Ogcheon metamorphic belt has occurred at ca. 300-280 Ma between Late Carboniferous and Early Permian. It is thus inferred that the Ogcheon metamorphic belt and the Taebaegsan basin have evolved as separate terranes and that both were sutured at ca. 250-220 Ma. These results are partly in contrast with those of previous workers and require a revised framework for tectonic evolution of the Ogcheon belt. In addition, it is likely that the Ogcheon belt is correlative with the Hida marginal belt and the Hida metamorphic belt.

Various space geodetic techniques have been developed for highly precise and cost-efficient positioning solutions. By correcting the physical phenomena near the earth’s surface, the positioning accuracy can be further improved. In this study, the vertical crustal deformation induced by the ocean tide loading was accurately estimated through GNSS absolute and relative positioning, respectively, and the tidal constituents of the results were then analyzed. In order to validate the processing accuracy, we calculated the amplitude of eight major tidal constituents from the results and compared them to the global ocean tide loading model FES2004. The experimental results showed that absolute positioning and positioning done every hour during the observation time of 2 hours, which yielded an outcome similar to the reference ocean tide loading model, were better approaches for extracting tide constituents than relative positioning. As a future study, a long-term GNSS data processing will be required in order to conduct more comprehensive analysis including an extended tidal component analysis.
A maximum of 3 km thickness of sediments were deposited above basement deformed by volcanic activities around the Dok Island. As the geological structure, the tension caused the basement-involved normal faults in the early stage of basin formation, whereas the sediment layers showed normal faults, volcanic domes and sills caused by volcanic activities. From the distribution of volcanics in order of age at the Ulleung Basin, volcanic activities were increased toward the northeastern direction (toward Dok Island). The study area is characterized by extensional crustal deformation before sediment deposition during the Early or Middle Miocene age, After the Late Miocene age, the basin was deformed by deep buried volcanics or subsidence of basin, in consequence, became complex geological structures.
