  • Radon, a carcinogenic substance generated from soil or building materials, have to be fundamentally blocked from entering indoors. In this study, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/silicone emulsions with excellent mechanical and thermal properties and effective blocking of radon gas were prepared by using radiation technology. As the electron-beam irradiation does increased, a partially crosslinked structure was formed in EVA molecular chain, increasing tensile properties and adhesive strength. The EVA/silicone film showed excellent thermal stability without deformation. In addition, the non-irradiated EVA/silicone film showed a radon blocking rate of about a 75%, while the EVA/silicone film irradiated with 3 and 5 kGy showed an excellent radon blocking rate of over 90% due to the formation of crosslinked structure in the EVA molecular chain. These results indicated that the radiation technology can effectively block radon by forming a partially crosslinked structure of EVA/silicone emulsion to improve tensile property, adhesive strength, and deformation stability.

  • Non-halogen flame retardants have been the focus of extensive research because of environmental problems. Hexakisp-henoxycyclotriphosphazene was synthesized in order to use as the flame retardant of ABS resin. And using bisphenol A, the polymers containing a cyclotriphosphazene structure were synthesized in order to also use as the flame retardant of ABS resin. All of the synthesized polymers themselves had the excellent flame retardancy. And as their molecular weight and crosslinking density were increased, the thermal stability was increased. But when the synthesized compounds were used as the flame retardant for ABS resin, the lower molecular weight compound in these compounds showed the better flame retardancy and the better physical properties of ABS resin.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites with various graphite oxide (GO) contents (0 to 10 wt%) were prepared by sonicating the mixture of PVA and GO, followed by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. GO was pre-treated with oxyfluorination ($O_2:F_2$ = 8:2) in order to modify the surface of GO to allow it to carry hydrophilic functional groups. PVA/GO composite hydrogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). The morphology of the PVA/GO composite hydrogels and the variations in soluble gel portion were investigated under various GO contents and UV irradiation doses. The variation in the chemical structure of photo degraded PVA/GO composite hydrogels was studied by FT-IR. The photochemical stability of PVA/GO composite hydrogels under UV irradiation was found to improve noticeably with increasing content of uniformly dispersed GO.

  • Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels were prepared by the irradiation and heating. Irradiation and heating processes were carried out to improve the heat resistance of PVA hydrogels at high temperature. The physical properties such as gel content, degree of swelling and gel strength for the synthesized hydrogels were examined. The structure variations were investigated using the following techniques: differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Gel content and gel strength of the hydrogels were higher when the two steps of irradiation followed by heat treatment were used rather than only with the irradiation. The hydrogels prepared by the irradiation and the two steps had good heat resistance at high temperature.

  • Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was fabricated using gelatin as a reductant, and it could be stably dispersed in gelatin solution without aggregation. A series of RGO/gelatin composite films with various RGO contents were prepared by a solution-casting method. The structure and thermal properties of the RGO/gelatin composite films were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The addition of RGO enhances the degree of crosslinking of gelatin films and decreases the swelling ability of the gelatin films in water, indicating that RGO/gelatin composite films have a better wet stability than gelatin films. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of gelatin films is also increased with the incorporation of RGO. The presence of RGO slightly increases the degradation temperature of gelatin films due to the very low content of RGO in the composite films. Since gelatin is a natural and nontoxic biomacromolecule, the RGO/gelatin composite films are expected to have potential applications in the biomedical field.

  • Various silanes, amino silane, vinyl silane, sulfur silane (TESPD), and ZS (TESPD/zinc soap complex), are added into chlorinated isobutylene-isoprene copolymer (CIIR)/soft clay/carbon black (CB) and CIIR/hard clay/CB compounds and they are investigated with respect to the vulcanization characteristics, the processability, and the mechanical properties. Comparing hard clay and soft clay filled compounds, hard clay (Suprex) filled system shows a higher die C tear than the soft clay (GK) filled one. The other properties (Mooney, extrusion torque/pressure, torque rise ($M_H-M_L$), modulus at 300%) are close to each other. Among various silanes, the ZS treated hard clay (Suprex) compound shows the highest mechanical property following hard clay(S)/vinyl silane(V) and soft clay(GK)/vinyl silane(V) compounds. The TESPD and the ZS effectively helps a formation of a strong 3-dimensional network structure between silica and CIIR via coupling reaction due to bifunctional nature of TESPD. In addition to that, the ZS added compounds show both a better processability and mechanical properties compared to the S2 ones at low concentration due to improved compatibility between zinc soap and CIIR matrix. Only the ZS added compound shows both improved processabilities (Mooney, Extrusion torque-& pressure) and improved mechanical properties (degree of crosslinking, elongation modulus, tear, and fatigue to failure counts) on both CIIR/hard clay/CB and CIIR/soft clay/CB compounds.

  • In this study, the colorants of Amur cork tree were extracted with boiling water. Chitosan crosslinked cotton fabrics have been dyed with aqueous extract of Amur cork tree and their dyeabilities on the fabrics were studied. Additionally the fastness to washing and light were also investigated. Cotton fabrics were treated with a crosslinking agent epichlorohydrin in the presence of chitosan to provide the cotton fabrics the dyeing properties of natural dye(Amur cork tree) by the chemical linking of chitosan to the cellulose structure. This process was applied by means of the conventional mercerizing process. The chitosan finishing and durable press finishing of the cotton fabrics occurred simultaneously in the mercerization bath. On the surface color change, the fabric of no-chitosan finished and no-mordanted has greenish yellow. The more crosslinked chitosan on cotton fabrics has the more turned down greenish on the surface color, as increasing the concentration of chitosan, greenish color turn down to the yellow close the 90o hue angle. In all sorts of fabrics, dyeability(K/S) is slightly affected by the number of manufacturing process and the concentration of chitosan. But only mercerized cotton fabric has higher dyeability (K/S) than mordant treated cotton fabrics. Wash fastness has little different results by each condition, but almost similar values. Light fastness was improved with chitosan treatment on cotton fabric.

  • We fabricated the crosslinked films using p-hexadecoxyphenol (p-HP), which is amphiphilic and can form polyion complexes with formaldehyde at the air-water interface. The behavior of polyion complexation at the air-water interface and the surface structure of LB films was investigated by Brewster angle microscope(BAM) and scanning Maxwell-stress microscope (SMM), respectively. Also, the electrical properties for crosslinking in phenol-formaldehyde LB films were investigated by measuring conductivity and dielectric constant. The conductivities of p-HP LB films are as follows: heat-treatment of 1% formaldehyde subphase(3.76$\times$10$^{-15}$ ~4.76$\times$10$^{-1}$5[S/cm])$\times$10$^{-14}$ ~1.74$\times$10$^{-14}$ [S/cm]). Also, relative dielectric constants of p-HP LB films were reduced from 6.76~7.84 (pure water) to 2.97~3.25 (heat-treatment of 1% formaldehyde subphase))

  • In this paper, IGZO thin film transistor (TFT) was fabricated with cross-linked Poly (4-vinylphenol) (PVP) gate dielectric for flexible, transparent display applications. The PVP is one of the candidates for low-temperature gate insulators. MIM structure was fabricated to measure the leakage current and evaluate the insulator properties according to the annealing temperature. Low leakage current ( <0.1nA/cm2 @ 1MV/cm ) was observed at $200^{\circ}C$ annealing condition and decreases much more as the annealing temperature increases. The electrical characteristics of IGZO TFT such as subthreshold swing, mobility and ON/OFF current ratio were also improved, which shows that the performance of IGZO TFTs with PVP can be enhanced by reducing the amount of incomplete crosslinking in PVP.

  • With the goal of enhancing the creep resistance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), we performed gamma irradiation and post-irradiation annealing at a low temperature, and investigated the crystalline structures and mechanical properties of the samples. Electron spin resonance spectra reveal that most of the residual radicals are stabilized by annealing at 100$^{\circ}C$ for 72 h under vacuum. Both the melting temperature and crystallinity increase after increasing the dose and by post-irradiation annealing. When irradiated with the same dose, the quenched sample having a higher amorphous fraction exhibits a lower swell ratio than does the slow-cooled sample. The measured tensile properties correlate well to the crystalline structure of the irradiated and annealed samples. For enhancing creep resistance, high crystallinity appears to be more critical than a high degree of crosslinking.
