In this study, the caprolactone modified hydroxy acrylates (CHAs) were synthesized by ring-opening reaction of caprolactone and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA) as initiator. Also, the caprolactone modified urethane acrylate (UA) oligomers were synthesized by condensation reaction of previously synthesized CHAs, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA) and hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer (HDT). Using the hydroxy number of CHAs, the molecular weights of the CHAs were calculated easily and their molecular weight was similar to the theoretical molecular weight of them. The viscosity of UA oligomers decreased as increasing a content of CHA in the UA oligomer. Cure films were prepared from UA oligomer, reactive diluents, and UV initiator to investigate their physical properties. The thermal stability and color difference on high temperature for the cured film were improved as increasing the crosslinking density. Their surface hardness was also increased as increasing crosslinking density of the cured films, but their elongation at break was decreased.
A series of UV-curable powder coatings with different contents of photoinitiator (0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, 2 wt%) were formulated and measured gel content, tensile strength of cured film. Heat-sensitive substrates such as MDF, plywood and PVC were coated UV-curable powder and cured coatings were measured physical properties by pendulum hardness tester, glossmeter, pull-off adhesion tester. With increasing photoinitiator content, adhesion force between coating and substrate decreased because of crosslinking density increasing. The results of pendulum hardness was not significantly changed but gloss was changed according to different substrates. Adhesion of UV-curable coatings was enough to apply for heat-sensitive substrates. From these results, we concluded that contents of photoinitiator was a effective factor in UV-curable powder coatings. UV-curable coatings was a portential candidate for heat-sensitive substrates.
A thiazole type accelerator MBT (2-mercapto benzothiazole) was added into silica filled natural rubber (NR) compound with various concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 phr). The effects of MBT on the cure rate, mechanical property, degree of rubber-filler interaction (${\alpha}_F$), crosslinking density, and viscoelastic property ($tan{\delta}$) were investigated. As accelerator concentration increased, the $t_{s2}$ and $t_{90}$ decreased and the crosslinking density and modulus at 300% elongation increased. The tensile strength and elongation increased up to 3 phr and no further increased at 4 phr. The $tan{\delta}$ value measured at room temperature was higher than that of the $70^{\circ}C$. The ${\alpha}_F$ value was not affected by the addition of MBT. The mechanisms for the vulcanization rate were reviewed.
With a highly functional methyl vinyl silicone rubber (VMQ) matrix and filler materials of $B_4C$, PbO, and benzophenone (BP) and through powder surface modification, silicone rubber mixing, and vulcanized molding, a flexible radiation shielding and resistant composite was prepared in the study. The dispersion property of the powder in the matrix filler was improved by powder surface modification. BP was added into the matrix to enhance the radiation resistance performance of the composites. After irradiation, the tensile strength, elongation, and tear strength of the composites decreased, while the Shore hardness of the composites and the crosslinking density of the VMQ matrix increased. Moreover, the composites with BP showed better mechanical properties and smaller crosslinking density than those without BP after irradiation. The initial degradation temperatures of the composites containing BP before and after irradiation were $323.6^{\circ}C$ and $335.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. The transmission of neutrons for a 2-mm thick sample was only 0.12 for an Am-Be neutron source. The transmission of ${\gamma}$-rays with energies of 0.662, 1.173, and 1.332 MeV for 2-cm thick samples were 0.7, 0.782, and 0.795, respectively.
It is important to analyze crosslink densities of rubber articles because the physical properties are dependent on the crosslink densities. In this paper, analytical techniques for the measurement of crosslink densities of rubber vulcanizates are described. The most widely used method to measure the crosslink density is a swelling method combined with the Flory-Rehner equation. Application of the interaction parameter (${\chi}$) of rubber and swelling solvent is critical because the crosslink density is absolutely dependent on the ${\chi}$ value. Methods for obtaining ${\chi}$ employ not only solubility parameters of the polymer and swelling solvent but also inverse gas chromatography (IGC). The solubilities of rubbers can be obtained using micro differential scanning calorimetry (${\mu}DSC$), intrinsic viscosity measurement, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been also used for the measurement of the crosslink density using the $T_2$ relaxation time, which is determined by spin-spin relaxation in solid-state NMR. For sulfur-cured rubber vulcanizates, crosslink densities according to the crosslink types of mono-, di-, and polysulfides are measured by treating the rubber samples with a chemical probe composed of thiol and amine compounds. Measurement methods of physical crosslinking by filler, crystallization, and ionic bonding have also been introduced.

The crystallization behavior of irradiated polypropylene (PP) and the blend is an important parameter for polymer processing. Blends of PP/low density polyethylene (LDPE) with different LDPE contents were prepared by melt mixing in a twin screw extruder. The effect of the LDPE content on the irradiation effectiveness of the PP/LDPE blend with trimethylolpropane-trimetacrylate (TMPTMA) as a crosslinking co-agent was investigated in conjunction with the LDPE loading in the blend. The non-isothermal crystallization and crystal structure were measured by DSC, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). A decrease in the melting temperature of PP was observed due to irradiation, which may be due to the PP chain scissioning effect of irradiation. The Ozawa component n represents a rod shaped, disc shaped and sphere-shaped geometry of the crystal if the value corresponds to 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Based on Ozawa analysis, the values of n were 3.8 and 2.3 for the pure PP and PP blends with 30 wt% LDPE, respectively. The fact that the crystal geometry of PP changed from spherical to disc and rod shaped was confirmed by Ozawa analysis and POM. The ${\beta}$ form XRD peak of the PP/LDPE blend at $16.1^{\circ}$ disappeared after irradiation due to the crosslinking reaction.

Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was identified to possess good mucoadhesive properties ensuring its application to extend the retention times of the formulations at the oral cavity, intended route of administration using the polymer. In the noncross-linked state, PAA will swell and become eroded owing to the presence of salivary flow from the site of application. The formation of cross-links between the polymer chains will allow swelling but prevents the erosion of the dosage form. In the current study, cross-linking was achieved by esterification of the PAA chains with sucrose. The density of crosslinking was modified by changing sucrose concentration and the duration of cure time. The cross-linking density of the polymer hydrogel was assessed by equilibrium swelling studies. The mucoadhesion testing method allowed a comparative study of the hydrogels prepared. An inverse relationship between equilibrium swelling and peak detachment force showed that increased PAA chain density per unit area enhanced the mucoadhesive interaction.
Proposals were mode on how to differentiate radiation effects in morphological phases of polyethylene and discussions were developed with the results obtained on a low density polyethylene, SOCAREX, specified by number average molecular weight; overbar Mn=5,400, density; 0.92, and degree of branch; 3.4/100 carbon atom, which was irradiated to Co$^{60}$ .gamma. ray at the dose rate of 0.5 Mrad/hr in ambient temperature under the pressure of 10$^{-5}$ Torr. or 1 atm. respectively. The effect to crystalline phase in possibly deduced from dose dependent variation of relative area between (110) and (200) peaks on X ray diffraction spectrum and that, the effects to amorphous phase can be understood through dose dependent relaxation behaviours of .betha. peak on internal friction characteristics of the specimen. The results obtained thus far indicate that, in crystalline phase, relative crystallinity shows a rather rapid decrease up to 20 Mrad with increasing dose, however, little change of crystallinity can be observed in the region between 20-200 Mrad, and degradation appears to be more predominant than crosslinking up to 60 Mrad. While in amorphous phase the indication also shows that degradation is only predominant up to 20 Mrad. Furthermore several correlations can be seen with amenable explanation between dose dependent behaviours observed in both phases.

The permeation properties of plasma polymer membranes were studied for permanent gases such as He, $H_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$ and condensable vapors such as $CO_2$, $C_2H_4$, $C_3H_8$. The plasma polymers were prepared by the discharge of microwave or radiofrequency(RF) wave. Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDS) vapor was used as a monomer for plasma polymerization. In HMDS plasma-polymerized membranes prepared under microwave discharge, the permeability coefficient was dependent of the kinetic molecular diameter of the permeate gases. Additionally the membranes showed higher $O_2/N_2$ permselectivity compared to the plasma polymers from radiofrequency discharge. On the contrary, in the HMDS plasma-polymerized membranes prepared under radiofrequency discharge, the permeability coefficient was dependent of the critical temperature of the permeant gases. The membranes showed high selectivities of $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$ over $N_2$. The permeability coefficient of plasma polymerized membranes prepared under microwave discharge was dependent of the molecular diameter of permeant gases because of high crosslinking density of the membrane. However, the crosslinking density of the plasma polymerized membranes prepared under RF discharge was lower because the energy density of RF wave is weaker than that of microwave. Hence, the permeability of RF plasma polymerized membranes became dependent of the critical temperature rather than molecular diameter of the gases.
As a preceeding work for the study on dielectric characterstics of a kind of low density polyethylene introduced morphological change by mechanical method, glass transition temperature which is regarded as a macroscopic aspect for relaxation of molecular chain segments has been observed by means of temperature dependent dilatometric measurement. The origina specimen clearly shows two knees which correspond to two peaks (.gamma. and .betha. peak) in the intenal friction measurement, suggesting the existence of separated glass transition temperatures at 150.deg.k and 260.deg.k respectively. On the specimen irradiated to 100 Mrad both glass transition temperatures tend to shift towards high temperature sides because of crosslinking by irradiation. furthemore an evidence can be seen that radiation effect, even in amorphous phase, is also slelctive depending on slight morphological differences. The specimen extended to four times in length shows a peculiar nature such as negative linear thermal expansion coefficient increasing with temperature between 220.deg.k and ambient temperature and that this fact is interpreted by considering that c axis of the lattice aligns along the extended direction by drawing, further c axis inherently possesses the characteristics of negative linear thermal expansion coefficient. For the observations that the relatively small positive linear expansion on the specimen extended to ca. two times as well as the part below 220.deg.k of the specimen extended to four times, it is considered for the reason of the facts that the incompletely oriented region indicated as the middle part of Peterlin's model tends to restore partially to orginal arrangement-a kind of phase transition-as increasing with temperature.
