  • To obtain epoxy resin with permanently attached flame-retardant groups, phosphorus compound containing di-hydroxyl group [10-(2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phospha phenanthrene-10-oxide, DOPO-HQ] and silicone compound containing di-hydroxyl group (polydimethylsiloxane, hydroxyl terminated, PDMS) were reacted with uncured epoxy prepolymer (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, DGEBA) and then cured using 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as a crosslinking agent. The properties of the resulting epoxy materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) test/vertical burning test (UL 94-V test), tensile properties test and impact test. This study examined the effect of phosphorus/silicone compound contents on the thermal/mechanical properties and flame retardancy of cured epoxy resins containing phosphorus and silicone compounds. It was found that the thermal/mechanical properties of epoxy resins containing phosphorus and silicone components were higher than those of simple epoxy resin. The flame-retardancy (LOI: 29.9 ~ 31.8% and UL 94-V: V-0) of all samples containing phosphorus compound and phosphrous compound/silicone compound was found to be passed the flame-retardant requirements (LOI: > 30%, UL 94-V: V-0) of LOI and vertical burning tests. However, the flame-retardancy (LOI: 21.4% and UL 94-V: no rating) of simple epoxy resin was found to be failed the flame-retardant requirements.

  • The short and variabke transit of drug throught GI tracj and the inter-and intra-subject variations of the transit restrict the sustained drug absorption after oral adminstration. These restrictions may be solved by retaining the dosage forms in the stomach. Then the dosage form will act as a platform which releases the drug slowly and makes the GI absorption occur for a long time. In this study, as the platforms, PVP hydrogels were synthesized by chemical and y-irradiation method in the cylindrical test tube. The chemical method means the synthesis of the hydrogel by heating the mixed solution of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone [monomer], acrylated albumin [crosslinking agent], 2, 2'-agobis(2-methylpropionitrile) [initiator] and proxyphylline [drug] at $65^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr. The $\gamma$-irradiation method means the synthesis of the hydrogel by irradiation with $^{60}$ Co $\gamma$-ray of the mixed solution of the monomer, acrylated albumin, and flurbiprofen [drug] at room temperature with total 0.2 Mrad for 3 hr. Our intention is to design the hydrogel tablet (diameter : 1.20 cm, thickness : 0.60 cm) which swells in the gastric fluid after oral administration to such a size that passing through the pylorus could be inhibited during the period of drug release. After releasing drug, the hydrogel should be degraded by the enzymeatic digestion in the stomach, or by hydrolysis and eventually solubilized. Thus, in votro tests were performed to examine the factors that affect swelling and drug release from the PVP hydrogels. Experimental results show that the hydrogels swell to a size larger than the diameter of the pylorus(l.3$\pm$0.7 cm) and the hydrogel prepared by the chemical method is digested by pepsin. But the hydrogel prepared by the $\gamma$-irradiation method was not digested by the pepsin and just collapsed with time. Thus, the swelling of the hydrogel synthesized by $\gamma$-irradiation was independent albumin acrylation time and pepsin concentration. But drug content and radiation dose affected the swelling and drug release kinetics of the hydrogel. Drug release from the hydrigels was prolonged up to about 24 hr. Therefore, it was concluded that by adjusting these factors, the albumin-crosslinked PVP hydrogel synthesized by $\gamma$-irradiation method is expected to be retained in the stomach for up to 60hr and be a potential platform of drugs for long-term GI absorption.

  • PLA(polylactic acid), one of biodegradable polymers was blended with various amounts of wood pulp powder through solution blending technic to verify the effect of reinforcing pulp amount on the mechanical properties of blend films. Also these blend films were further modified with TDI(toluene diisocyanate) as crosslinking agent to introduce urethane functions by reaction of pulp hydroxyl groups and isocyanate. As a result, the tensile strength of blend film with 0.25 wt% pulp was increased from $565.25kg_f/cm^2$ for PLA film itself to $624.20kg_f/cm^2$. However, elongation of this film was decreased by 50% of that of PLA film itself. Only PLA/pulp blend film further modified with 500% of TDI/0.25 wt% pulp showed the slightly increased tensile strength but decreased elongation. Melting point and glass transition temperature of PLA/pulp blend films were confirmed by using Differential Scanning Calorimeter(DSC). Thermal stability of these blend films measured by TGA showed only a slight increase at temperature lower than $300^{\circ}C$.

  • The thermal expansion coefficient of epoxy/inorganic additives composites was controlled by changing the amount of the inorganic additives such as talc and fused silica. The epoxy resin comprises hydrogenated bisphenol A (HBA)-based epoxide, difunctional polyglycidyl epoxide (DPE) as a diluent and isophorone-diamine (IPDA) as a crosslinking agent, which was subsequently mixed with inorganic additives (talc and fused silica). The thermal expansion coefficient was decreased by increasing amount of inorganic additives, nearly to fresh granite. Fused silica was more effective than talc in lowering the thermal expansion coefficient. Additionally, lexural and tensile strengths of the composites were getting lower and higher with the amount of the inorganic fillers, respectively. It was thus concluded that an epoxy composite containing inorganic fillers was developed to show much lower thermal expansion coefficient, similar to fresh granite, than the neat epoxy resin, and also proper mechanical strengths for applications.

  • To improve the mechanical properties, such as durabilities and antioxidative characteristics, the covalently cross-linked (CL-) SPEEK (sulfonated polyether ether ketone)/Cs-substituted HPA (heteropoly acid) organic-inorganic composite membranes (CL-SPEEK/Cs-HPAs), have been intensively investigated. The composite membrane were prepared by blending cesium-substituted HPAs (Cs-HPAs), including tungstophosphoric acid (TPA), molybdophosphoric acid (MoPA), and tungstosilicic acid (TSiA) with cross-linking agent content of 0.01 mL. And composite electrolytes composed of Cs-HPAs, prepared by immersion (imm.) and titration (titr.) methods to increase the stability of HPAs in water, were applied to polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis (PEME). As a result, the proton conductivity of Cs-substituted composite membranes increased rapidly over $60^{\circ}C$ but mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, decreased in accordance with added Cs content. The bleeding-out of Cs-TPA membranes by titration method (50 vol.% Cs) decreased steadily to 2.15%. In the oxidative stability test by Fenton solution, the durability of membranes with Cs-HPA significantly increased. In case of CL-SPEEK/ Cs-TPA membrane, duration time increased more than 1200 hours. It is expected that even though CL-SPEEK/Cs-MoPA membrane shows the high proton conductivity, electrocatalytic activity and cell voltage of 1.80 V for water electrolysis, the CL-SPEEK/Cs-TPA (imm.) is more suitable as an alternative membrane in real system with the satisfactory proton conductivity, mechanical properties, anti-oxidative stability and cell voltage of 1.89 V.

  • We tried to prepare polystyrene composite particles containing carbon black by suspension polymerization with water as a reaction medium. Hydrophobic silica was selected as a stabilizer and oil-soluble azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), as an initiator. All polymerization reactions were carried out at a fixed temperature of $75^{\circ}C$. Stabilizer concentration was varied from $0.17{\sim}3.33wt%$ compared to water, where particles with $7.96{\mu}m$ in average diameter were obtained at 1.57 wt% of stabilizer. Increase in divinylbenzene concentration, as a crosslinking agent, from $0.1{\sim}1.0 wt%$ compared to monomer exhibited a large increase in average particle diameter Incorporation of 1wt% of carbon black compared to monomer produced an increase in average diameter It is speculated that viscosity lower than that necessary to induce even dispersion of carbon black particles led to poor dispersion, and as a result, large particles. For a styrene mixture containing 3 wt% carton black compared to monomer, enhanced dispersion due to an increase in carbon black concentration reduced average particle diameters. For styrene mixtures containing 1 and 3 wt% carbon black compared to monomer, preparticles before polymerization and polymer composite particles after polymerization showed a similar tendency towards particle formation. When carbon black concentration compared to monomer was increased to 5 and 7 wt%, styrene mixtures exhibited a large increase in viscosity and thus better dispersion of carbon black particles, which led to a decrease in preparticle diameters. However, these particles experienced agglomeration in the polymerization process, and polystyrene composite particles increased in average diameter.

  • Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) had been widely used as a biomaterial without immune rejection responses. SIS sponges prepared by crosslinking with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). SIS powders dissolved in $3\%(v/v)$ acetic acid aqueous solution for 48hrs and freeze-dried. EDC solution ($H_2O$ : ethanol = 5 : 95) as a crosslink agent was used in concentration of 100mM. In vitro, rat-BMSCs seeded in SIS sponges and induced the osteogenesis for 28 days. We have characterized the osteogenic potential of rat-BMSCs in SIS sponges by alkaline phosphatase activity(ALP), n assay, SEM and RT-PCR for osteogenic phenotype. In SEM, all morphology of SIS sponges was regular and showed interconnected pore structure. By RT-PCR analysis, we observed type I collagen expression. These results demonstrate osteogenic differentiation of rat-BMSCs. In conclusion, we confirmed that the morphology of surface, cross-section, and side of SIS sponges were highly porous with good interconnections between each pores, which can support the surface of cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. This result indicates that SIS sponge is useful for osteogenesis of BMSCs.

  • Epoxy resin has the disadvantage of being easily destroyed by instantaneous impact due to its high crosslinking density despite its high glass transition temperature (Tg) and excellent properties. To compensate for this, in this study, polyol was synthesized by ring opening polymerization of propylene glycol (PPG) diamine, Jeffamine D 2000 and propylene carbonate, and urethane modified epoxy was synthesized using this. The properties of the synthesized urethane modified epoxy were confirmed by FT-IR, H-NMR. To confirm the degree of improvement in impact resistance as an adhesive, a urethane modified epoxy adhesive was prepared by mixing a digylcidyl ether bisphenol A (DGEBA) with curing agent and curing accelerator. Properties test of urethane modified epoxy were shear strength, tensile strength and impact strength. As a result, excellent results were obtained in all test when the ratio of DGEBA : urethane modified epoxy was 8:2.

  • In order to improve the durability of the PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells) polymer membrane, a radical scavenger and a support are used. In this study, the durability of membranes containing fucoidan extracted from seaweeds and tannic acid serving as a crosslinking agent is evaluated to improve chemical and physical durability. Physical durability is evaluated by measuring tensile strength, and chemical durability is measured by Fenton experiment. Membrane and electrode assembly (MEA) is prepared and mechanical and chemical durability are measured through accelerated durability evaluation in the cell. The tensile strength measurement showed that fucoidan and tannic acid can improve the mechanical durability of the membrane by improving the strain rate and yield strength. It is shown in Fenton experiment that fucoidan acts as a radical scavenger. As a result of the accelerated durability test in the unit cell, fucoidan improved both chemical and mechanical durability, increasing the accelerated durability evaluation time by 38.1% compared to the additive-free membrane. When tannic acid is added, the durability of the polymer membrane is improved by 13.9% by improving the mechanical durability.

  • There are several methods for shaping foams, but the most commonly used methods involve the use of resin mixed with a foaming agent, which is then foamed under high temperature and pressure in the case of compression foaming, or foamed under high temperature without applying pressure in the case of atmospheric foaming. The polymers used for foaming require design and analysis of optimal foaming conditions in order to achieve foaming under ambient pressure. Environmentally friendly bio-based polymers face challenges when it comes to foaming on their own, which has led to ongoing research in blending them with resins capable of traditional foam production. This study investigates changes in the characteristics of bio-based polymer-EVA blend foams based on variations in the content of bio-based polymers and explores the optimal foaming conditions according to crosslinking. The correlation between foaming characteristics and mechanical properties of the foams was examined. Through this research, we gained insights into how the content of bio-based polymers affects the properties of foams containing bio-based polymers and identified differences between ambient pressure and high-pressure foaming processes. Additionally, the feasibility of commercializing bio-based polymer-EVA composite foams was confirmed.
