Alginate-chitosan (anion-cationic polymeric complex) was prepared to control the release rate of silver sulfadiazine (AgSD). Na-alginate (2%) solution containing AgSD was gelled in $CaCl_2$ solution. The gel beads formed were immediately encapsulated with chitosan (CS). The gel matrix and membrane were then reinforced with chondroitin-6-sulfate (Ch6S). Release rate of AgSD from the gel matrix was investigated by placing alginate beads in the sac of cellulose membrane simmered in HEPES-buffer solution. The concentration of AgSD released was analyzed by UV at 264 nm. Incorporation capacity of AgSD in Ca-alginate gel was more than 90%. Alginate-Ch6S-CS could control the release rate of AgSD. The amount of AgSD release was dependent on the AgSD loading dose. Incorporation of tripolyphosphate (polyanionic crosslinker) onto the alginate-Ch6S-CS bead increased the release rate of AgSD. Collagen-coating had no influence on the AgSD release rate. Alginate-Ch6S-CS beads with a sufficiently high AgSD encapsulation were capable of controlling the release of the drug over 10 days. In summary, alginate-Ch6S-CS beads could be used as a sustained delivery for AgSD and provide local targeting with low silver toxicity and patient discomfort.
In this study, ionotropic gelation method was used for the preparation of ibuprofen-loaded calcium alginate (CALG) and ethylenediamine (EDA) treated calcium alginate (EDA-CALG) microspheres. The effect of EDA-treatment on drug entrapment efficiency, particle size, morphology, swelling behavior and in vitro release characteristics of the microspheres was investigated by varying its concentration from 0.5 to 2% (v/v). The reduction in drug entrapment efficiency by a maximum of 44.60% was noted for EDA-CALG microspheres compared to untreated CALG microspheres. The particle size and swelling index of EDA-CALG microspheres were reduced with increasing EDA concentration. All the microspheres were observed to retain their spherical shapes with rough surfaces. EDA-CALG microspheres prepared using 1% and 2% v/v EDA, released almost all of its content within 7 h in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer, however, CALG microspheres were found to release the same within 3 h. The intensity of melting endothermic peak of ibuprofen reduced significantly at lower drug load as experienced from DSC thermograms. The FT-IR spectrum of pure ibuprofen, ibuprofen-loaded CALG and EDA-CALG microspheres showed the characteristic band of C = O stretching vibration of ibuprofen. Hence, this study revealed that EDA can be employed for the preparation of ibuprofen-loaded CALG microspheres to retard the drug release to some extent.
Porcine liver esterase was immobilized in polyacrylamide gel for the enantioselective production of levofloxacin from ofloxacin butyl ester. The initial activity of immobilized esterase was found to be significantly affected by the polyacrylamide gel composition. The optimum concentrations of monomer and crosslinker were determined to be 20% and 8.3%, respectively. The activity of immobilized esterase was 55.4% compared to a free enzyme. Enantiomeric excess was maintained at 60%, almost the same level as that of free enzyme. In addition, the immobilized esterase could be used repeatedly up to 10 times without experiencing any severe loss of activity and enantioselectivity.
The acrylic coating emulsions were prepared by the emulsion polymerization to protect the surface of steel plate from the corrosion chemicals like acid, base and salt water. MMA(methyl methacrylate), styrene, BA(butyl acrylate), and 2-HEMA(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) were used as monomer. KPS(potassium persulfate) and SBS(sodium bisulfite) as redox initiator and SDBS(sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) as emulsifier were used on the emulsion polymerization reaction. The most stable in-situ coating was obtained when 10% of MMA was added. Both particle size and quantity in emulsion were decreased as increasing the mount of SDBS. the most stable prepared coating emulsion with polyisocyanate crosslinker showed very high anticorrosion properties on the coated steel layer to salt water, whereas no significant improvement of anticorrosion property to acdic and basic condition it showed.
A novel, polysaccharide-based, superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized through crosslinking graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) onto kappa-carrageenan ($_{k}C$), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator in the presence of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. A proposed mechanism for $_{k}C$g-polymethacrylic acid ($_{k}C$-g-PMAA) formation was suggested and the hydrogel structure was confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of grafting variables, including MBA, MAA, and APS concentration, was systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with the maximum possible swelling capacity. The swelling kinetics in distilled water and various salt solutions were preliminarily investigated. Absorbency in aqueous salt solutions of lithium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and aluminum chloride indicated that the swelling capacity decreased with increased ionic strength of the swelling medium. This behavior can be attributed to the charge screening effect for monovalent cations, as well as ionic crosslinking for multivalent cations. The swelling of super absorbing hydrogels was measured in solutions with pH ranging from 1 to 13. In addition, the pH reversibility and on-off switching behavior, at pH levels of 3.0 and 8.0, give the synthesized hydrogels great potential as an excellent candidate for the controlled delivery of bioactive agents.

The pH sensitive hydrogels composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and acryloyl phenylalanine (APA) were prepared by redox polymerization using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent, Keterolac Tromethamine (KT), was loaded successfully into poly(NIPA-co-APA) copolymeric hydrogels by swelling equilibrium method. To understand the nature of drug in the polymeric matrix, the newly synthesized drug loaded poly(NIPA-co-APA) copolymeric hydrogels were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique result indicates the spherical smooth surface of the hydrogels. The drug (KT) releasing nature of the poly(NIPA-co-APA) hydrogels was studied in pH 1.2 and 7.4. Effects of drug loading, crosslinking agent, pH and the ionic strength of the external medium on swelling of hydrogels were also investigated.
We developed in the present study molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs), using single templates (pentoxifylline, caffeine and theophylline) and mixed-templates (pentoxifylline-caffeine, pentoxifylline-theophylline and caffeine-theophylline). The MIPs were prepared with methacrylic acid (MAA) as the monomer, ethylene glycol dimetharylate (EGDMA) as the crosslinker and 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as the initiator. The obtained polymer particles (particle size after grinding was about 25-35 ${\mu}$m) were packed into a HPLC column (3.9 mm i.d. ${\times}$ 150 mm). The selectivity and chromatographic characteristics of the MIPs were studied using acetonitrile as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min. UV detector wavelength was set at 270 nm. Different single template MIPs showed different molecular recognitions to the templates and the structurally analogues, according to the rigidity and steric hindrance of the compounds. Recognition was improved on the mixed-template MIPs as a result of the cooperation or sum effect of the templates, whereas on the pentoxifylline-theophylline imprinted polymer, the highest selectivity and affinity were obtained. Separations of the test compounds on different polymers were also investigated.
It has been considered that malic acid, $\alpha$-hydroky succinic acid, could not form crosslinks in the cellulosic materials unless activated by other polycarboxylic acids such as butanetetracarboxylic acid or citric acid because there are only two carboxylic acids per molecule available fur the formation of one anhydride intermediate. However we found that the dicarboxylic malic acid with sodium hypophosphite catalyst without the addition of other crosslinkers was able to improve wrinkle resistance of cotton up to $294^{\circ}$(dry WRA) and $285^{\circ}$ (wet WRA), which is a measure of crosslinking level in cotton. $^1$H FT-NMR, FT-IR and GPC analysis indicated the in-situ formation of an trimeric $\alpha$, $\beta$-rnalic acid with a composition of 1:3 through the esterification between hydroxyl group and one of carboxylic groups in malic acid during curing. The crosslinking of cotton was attributed to the trimeric $\alpha$, $\beta$-malic acid, a tetracarboxylic acid, which can form two anhydride rings during curing. The influence of crosslinking conditions such as concentrations of malic acid and catalyst, pH of the formulation bath, and curing temperature were investigated in terms of imparted wrinkle resistance and whiteness. The addition of reactive polyurethane resin in the formulation slightly increased the mechanical strength retention of crosslinked fabric coupled with additional increase in wrinkle resistance.
