  • Theoretical expressions were dcrived for the numher of fibers per unit cross-sectional area in fiber reinforced concrete, with due consideration given to the effects of the surrounding boundaries. The number of fibers per unit cross-sectional area in steel fiber reinforced concrete was also measured experimentally for the specimens incorporating various volume fractions of fibers of different types. Statistical evaluation of the measured value was then performed in order to assess the differences in fiber concentration at different location on tbe cross section. Degree of reorientation of steel fibers in concrete occuring during vibration was examined by com¬paring the differences in the computed and measur'ed values of the number of fibers per unit cross-sectional area.

  • The risk of collapse in hydraulic structures has become more elevated, due to the increased probability and scale of flooding caused by global warming and the resulting abnormal climatic conditions. When a levee, a typical hydraulic structure, breaks, an enormous breach flow pours into the floodplain and much flood damage then occurs. It is important to accurately calculate the breach discharge in order to predict this damage. In this study, the variation of the breach discharge with the asymmetry in the cross-section of the levee breach was analyzed. Through hydraulic experiments, the cross-section of the breach was analyzed during the collapse using the BASD (Bilateral ASymmetry Degree), which was developed to measure the degree of asymmetry. The relationship of the breach discharge was identified using the BASD. Additionally, the variation of the breach flow measured by the BASD was investigated through a 3-D numerical analysis under the same flow conditions as those in the experiment. It was found that the assumption of a rectangular breach cross-section, which is generally used for the estimation of the inundation area, can cause the breach discharge to be overestimated. According to the BASD, the breach flow is decreased by the interference effect in the breach section of the levee. If the breach flow is calculated while considering the BASD in the numerical analysis of the flooding, it is expected that the predicted inundation area can be estimated accurately.

  • Resistivity Image Profiling has been applied to a geological survey in the Keoje-do area. Survey lines are located near the KD-02 and KD-06 wells in the area, where we have already sampled all rock cores and carried out several kinds of geophysical logs. In each site a resistivity cross-section is obtained by inverting pole-pole apparent resistivities. Comparing the reconstructed resistivity section with the rock cores and logging data obtained in the well provides a detailed picture of subsurface geology. The geology of KD-02 site is composed of conglomerate, sandstone and shale with fractures. The reconstructed resistivity image is useful for assessing the grade of weathering of these rocks. The KD-06 site is mainly underlain by granitic rocks, and its fresh basement can be delineated by resistivities over $1000{\Omega}{\cdot}m$.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of various nickel-titanium (NiTi) files with similar tapers and cross-sectional areas depending on whether they were surface-treated. Materials and Methods: Three NiTi file systems with a similar convex triangular cross-section and the same ISO #25 tip size were selected for this study: G6 (G6), ProTaper Universal (PTU), and Dia-PT (DPT). To test torsional resistance, 5 mm of the straightened file's tip was fixed between polycarbonate blocks (n = 15/group) and continuous clockwise rotation until fracture was conducted using a customized device. To evaluate cyclic fatigue resistance, files were rotated in an artificial curved canal until fracture in a dynamic mode (n = 15/group). The torsional data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey post-hoc comparison test, while the cyclic fatigue data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test at a significance level of 95%. Results: PTU showed significantly greater toughness, followed by DPT and G6 (p < 0.05). G6 showed the lowest resistance in ultimate torsional strength, while it showed a higher fracture angle than the other files (p < 0.05). In the cyclic fatigue test, DPT showed a significantly higher number of cycles to failure than PTU or G6 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the torsional resistance of NiTi files was affected by the cross-sectional area, while the cyclic fatigue resistance of NiTi files was influenced by the surface treatment.

  • Process design for elliptically shaped deep drawing products is various according to size shape and specification of products. This study presents two approaches to design the preform that is a key process for elliptically shaped products, One of these is that cross-section of punch is circular. Another is that for the improvement of characteristics for final products the cross-section of the punch is similar to rectangular shape. After forming the preform process design of top-part drawing is the same. In the study blank shape and dimension are obtained by applying a numerical formula and surface area constancy.

  • We studied the plating properties of Sn-Pb solder according to the shape of the Cu wire's cross-section for photovoltaic ribbon. The thickness of the Sn-Pb layer largely decreased to 29% on a curved Cu surface, compared to a flat Cu surface. This phenomenon is caused by the geometrical decrease in the contact angle of the liquid Sn-Pb solder and an increase in the surface energy of the solid/vapor on the curved Cu surface. We suggest a new ribbon's design where the Cu wire's cross-section is a semi-ellipse. These semi-ellipse ribbons can decrease the use of Sn-Pb solder to 64% and increase the photovoltaic efficiency, by reducing the contact area between the ribbon and cell, to 84%. We also see an improvement of reflectivity in the curved surface.

  • One vertical (medianus) and six horizontal (chest, bust, below bust, waist, abdomen and hip) sections of nine healthy pregnant women were examined every month by siliding gauge method during the period from 3rd to loth monthes of pregnancy. In the body changes along the passing months of pregnancy, which were observed by a follow·up measurement, there was little change on the posterior line when viewed using a vertical cross section. On the contrary, there was a great deal of increase on the anterior median line. Particularly, the degree of protrusion was great in the waist and ubilicus area due to pregnancy. At early pregnancy the distance from front to back is much shorter than side to side, however, as pregnancy progressed the front to back distance, on a horizontal cross section, is almost equal to the side to side distance.

  • Modified structure of copper pillar bump which has trapezoidal cross section on the top region is suggested with simulation results and concept of fabrication process. Due to the large surface area of joint region between bump and solder in suggested structure, electro-migration effect can be reduced. Reduction of electro-migration is related with current density and joule heating in bump and investigated with finite element methods with variation of dimensional parameters. Mechanical characteristics are also investigated with comparing modified copper pillar bump and conventional copper pillar bump.

  • Flow pulsation in the gap connecting with two parallel channels is investigated by RANS and URANS approaches. The two parallel channels are connected by a small channel called for a gap. The parallel channels are designed to have different cross section area with its ratio of 0.5. Computations are conducted using a CFX 11.0 code. The bulk Reynolds number is 60,000. Predicted results are compared with the previous experimental data. Mean velocity profile at the center of gap region are compared with experiments for its validation. Spectral analysis on the lateral velocity in the center of the gap was performed. Auto correlation for the axial-flow velocity pattern was presented. The unsteady structure of the flow pulsation was visualized in the region of the gap in the parallel channel.

  • Separating a reentry vehicle into warhead and body is a conventional and efficient means of producing a huge decoy and increasing the kinetic energy of the warhead. This procedure causes the radar to track the body, whose radar cross section is larger, and ignore the warhead, which is the most important part of the reentry vehicle. However, the procedure is difficult to perform using standard tracking criteria. This study presents a novel tracking algorithm by integrating input estimation and modified probabilistic data association filter to solve this difficulty in a clear environment. The proposed algorithm with a new defined association probability in this filter provides a good tracking capability for the warhead ignoring the radar cross section. The simulation results indicate that the errors between the estimated and the warhead trajectories are reduced to a small interval in a short time. Therefore, the radar can produce a beam to illuminate to the right area and keep tracking the warhead all the way. In conclusion, this algorithm is worthy of further study and application.
