  • In tied-arch bridges, the way the arch and the deck are connected may become crucial. The deck is usually suspended from hangers made out of steel pinned cables capable of resisting axial forces only. However, a proper structural response may be ensured by fixing and stiffening the hangers in order to resist, additionally, shear forces and bending moments. Thus, this paper studies the effect of different pinned and stiffened hanger arrangements on the structural behavior of the tied-arch bridges, with the intention of providing designers with useful tools at the early steps of design. Longitudinally and transversally stiffened hangers (and the effect of hinges at the hangers and their locations) are studied separately because the in-plane and the out-of-plane behavior of the bridge are uncoupled due to its symmetry. As a major conclusion, regarding the in-plane behavior, hangers composed of cables (either with vertical, $Nielsen-L\ddot{o}hse$ or network arrangements) are recommended due to its low cost and ease of erection. Alternatively, longitudinally stiffened hangers, fixed at both ends, can be used. Regarding the out-of-plane behavior, and in addition to three-dimensional arrangements of cables, of limited effectiveness, transversally stiffened hangers fixed at both ends are the most efficient arrangement. A configuration almost as efficient and, additionally, cheaper and easier to build can be achieved by locating a hinge at the end corresponding to the most flexible structural element (normally the arch). Its efficiency is further improved if the cross-section tapers from the fixed end to the pinned end.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the geometrical accuracy of a patient-specific bolus based on a three-dimensional (3D) printed mold and casting method. Materials and Methods: Three breast cancer patients undergoing treatment for a superficial region were scanned using computed tomography (CT) and a designed bolus structure through a treatment planning system (TPS). For the fabrication of patient-specific bolus, we cast harmless certified silicone into 3D printed molds. The produced bolus was also imaged using CT under the same conditions as the patient CT to acquire its geometrical shape. We compared the shapes of the produced bolus with the planned bolus structure from the TPS by measuring the average distance between two structures after a surface registration. Results and Conclusions: The result of the average difference in distance was within 1 mm and, as the worst case, the absolute difference did not exceed ${\pm}2mm$. The result of the geometric difference in the cross-section profile of each bolus was approximately 1 mm, which is a similar property of the average difference in distance. This discrepancy was negligible in affecting the dose reduction. The proposed fabrication of patient-specific bolus is useful for radiation therapy in the treatment of superficial regions, particularly those with an irregular shape.

  • In this study, we investigate the electrochemical performance of lithium terephthalate (LTA) battery using graphite coated metal current collector to overcome the disadvantages of organic batteries which is high interfacial resistance between current collector and electrode. The LTA anode material is synthesized by acid-based ion exchange reaction without impurities. The contact properties between stick-type LTA-based electrode and graphite coated current collector are estimated by the cross-section SEM and EIS. The graphite coated current collector significantly reduced the interfacial resistance of the LTA battery. The second discharge capacities of bare current collector LTA and graphite coated current collector LTA batteries are 107.6 mAh/g and 148.8 mAh/g at 0.1C, respectively. The graphite coated current collector LTA batteries show higher cycle life, higher discharge capacity, and higher rate-capability than bare LTA batteries.

  • A band gap refers to a certain frequency range where the propagation of mechanical waves is prohibited. This work focuses on engineering three-dimensional Kelvin lattices having external band gaps at low audible frequency ranges using a gradient-based design optimization method. Elastic wave propagation in an infinite periodic lattice is investigated by employing the Bloch theorem. We model the ligaments using a shear-deformable beam model obtained by consistent linearization in a geometrically exact beam theory. For a given lattice topology, we enlarge band gap sizes by controlling the configuration of the beam neutral axis and cross-section thickness that are smoothly parameterized by B-spline basis functions within the isogeometric analysis framework.

  • In this study, the strength and stiffness (EI) of wood-concrete composite beams for bridges with T-shaped cross section were evaluated. Two types of connectors were used: connectors bonded with epoxy adhesive and connectors attached to the wood just by pre-drilling (without adhesive). The connectors consisted of common steel bars with a diameter of 12.5 mm. Initially, the strength and stiffness (EI) of the beams were analyzed by bending tests with the load applied at the third point of the beam. Subsequently, the composite beams were evaluated by numerical simulation using ANSYS software with focus on the connection system. To make the composite beams, Eucalyptus citriodora wood and medium strength concrete were used. The slip modulus K and the ultimate strength values of each type of connector were obtained by direct shear tests performed on composite specimens. The results showed that the connector glued with epoxy adhesive resulted in better strength and stiffness (EI) for the composite beams when compared to the connector fixed by pre-drilling. The differences observed were up to 10%. The strength and stiffness (EI) values obtained analytically by $M{\ddot{o}}hler^{\prime}$ model were lower than the values obtained experimentally from the bending tests, and the differences were up to 25%. The numerical simulations allowed, with reasonable approximation, the evaluation of stress distributions in the composite beams tested experimentally.

  • In this study, pin-fin arrays, which are widely used for cooling turbine blades, were studied. The vortex generator in pin-fin arrays is located in front of the circular tube. The cross-section of the vortex generator is NACA-9410. The purpose of this study is to analyze heat transfer performance and flow characteristics of pin-fin arrays. The position of vortex generator is changed with the vertical flow direction on the bottom wall. Pin-fin arrays were calculated with 6000, 10000 and 15000 Reynolds number. The commercial program ANSYS v18.0 CFX and the turbulence model $k-{\omega}$ SST were used. As a result, the heat transfer performance increased up to 5.8% and pressure loss increased less than 1%.

  • Recently, expansion of urban and social infrastructures is planned to go through the transfer of military facilities or crossing the infrastructures via underground tunnels. However, when crossing facilities such as ammunition and explosive storages, a high level of safety assessment is required to prevent an accidental explosion of ground ammunition. In this study, a case study was conducted to evaluate the effect of blasting for the construction of tunnel on the ground ammunition facilities. The design section of Sinansan train operated by the Korea Railroad Authority with agreement of the Ministry of National Defense was selected. For the purpose of this study, the vibration velocity due to explosion was predicted by using GTS-NX, a numerical analysis program. Through literature review, it was confirmed that the vibration velocity of 0.2cm/sec can be a safety evaluation standard. These safety evaluation indicators and procedures used in this study can be utilized as an index of safety evaluation in the planning of social infrastructures that cross the ammunition facilities in the future.

  • As a demand of higher power photovoltaic modules, shingled, multi-busbar, half-cell, and bifacial techniques are developed. Multi-busbar module has advantage for large amount of light havesting. And, half-cell is high power module for reducing resistive losses and higher shade tolerance. Recently, researches on multi-busbar is focused on reliability according to adhesion and intermetallic compound between Sn-Pb solder and Ag electrode. And half-cell module is researched to comparing with full-sized cell module for structure difference. In this study, we investigated the factors affecting to efficiency and adhesion of multi-wires half-cell module according to wire thickness, solder thickness, and flux. The results of solar simulator and peel test was that peel strength and efficiency of soldered cell is not related. But samples with flux including high solid material showed high efficiency. The results of FE-SEM and EDX line scan on cross-section between wire and Ag electrode for different flux showed thickness of solder joint between wire and Ag electrode is increasing through solid material increasing. Flux including high solid material would affect to solder behavior on Ag electrode. Higher solid material occurred lower growth of IMC layer because solder permeate to sider of wire ribbon than Ag electrode. And it increased fill factor for high efficiency. In soldering process, amount of solid material in flux and solder thickness are the factor related with characteristic of soldered photovoltaic cell.

  • Experimental studies have been carried out to investigate characteristics of gas explosion using a multi layered water gel barrier in a vented explosion chamber. The chamber is consisted of 1600 mm in length, with a square cross-section of $100{\times}100mm^2$. The gel concentration of inner layer of MLWGB ranged from 10% to 90% with intervals of 10% by weight of gel. Displacement of the MLWGB was photographed with a measured using a high-speed video camera, and pressure development was measured using a data acquisition system. It was found that MLWGBs with 10 ~ 20% inner layer concentrations were ruptured during the explosions. As the concentrations of inner layer increased from 30% to 90%, the barriers were not ruptured. As the gel concentrations of the inner layer increased, the displacement increased toward the chamber exit and the pressure decreased for the ruptured barriers. It was found that the pressure attenuation obtained from the MLWGB was higher than that of the single water gel barrier. For the cases of non-ruptured barriers, the pressure inside the chamber less increased with increasing gel concentrations of the inner layer. It was also found that the displacement moved back into the chamber for non-ruptured MLWGBs, and it was sensitive to the gel concentrations.

  • Recently, in order to solve the traffic congestion in urban areas and to improve the peripheral environment, research on the design and construction technology development of great depth underground double-deck tunnel is under way by using the underground space in the urban area. The network type double-deck tunnel is in the form of an intersection with a small cross section and a steep slope as per construction at the base of a flatland, so that the fire smoke spreads rapidly in case of fire, which is expected to cause damage of human life. Therefore, this study is analyzed the delay effect of fire smoke diffusion according to the installation and non - installation of delay system for fire smoke diffusion at the intersection. Fire fumes were delayed up to 270 seconds when the delay system for fire smoke diffusion was installed at the intersection and it is analyzed that the greater the operating area of the delay system for fire smoke diffusion, the more preventable the damage of human life of the intersection.
