  • In the present study, the thermal buckling analysis of thick anisotropic laminated composite plates is carried out using the finite strip method based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. Therefore, this theory yields improved results over the Mindlin plate theory and eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. The critical temperatures of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminates are calculated. The effects of several parameters, such as the aspect ratio, the length-to-thickness ratio, the number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence, are investigated.

  • In the present study, a finite strip method for the vibration and stability analyses of anisotropic laminated composite plates is developed according to the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. In comparison with the finite strip method based on the first-order shear deformation theory, the present method gives improved results for very thick plates while using approximately the same number of degrees of freedom. It also eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. A number of numerical examples are presented to show the effect of aspect ratio, length-to-thickness ratio, number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence on the natural frequencies and critical buckling loads of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and arbitrary angle-ply composite laminates.

  • Using the embedded optical fiber sensor of totally-reflected extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer(TR-EFPI), longitudinal strains(Ex) of the core and skin layers in glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) cross-ply composite laminates have been measured. Transmission optical microscopy was employed to study the damage formation around the TR-EFPI sensor. It was observed that values of ex in the interior of the skin layer and the core layer measured by embedded TR-EFPI sensor was significantly higher than that of the specimen surface measured by strain gauges. The experimental results agreed well with those from finite element analysis on the basis of uniform stress model. Large strains in the core layer led to the occurrence of transverse cracks which drastically reduced the strain at failure of optical fiber sensor embedded in the core layer.

  • To determine the natural frequencies and damping ratios of composite laminated plates, we present an officient modal parameter estimation technique by developing residual spectrum based structural system reconstruction. The modal parameters can be estimated from poles and residues of the system transfer functions, derived from the state space system matrices. From vibration tests on cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminates, the natural frequencies and damping ratios can be estimated using the modal coordinates of the structural dynamic system reconstructed from the experimental frequency response functions. These results are compared with those of finite element analysis and single-degree-of-freedom curve fitting.

  • This paper demonstrates the analyses of the interlaminar shear stress of laminated composite plates subjected to transversely impact. For this purpose, a plate finite element model based on the higher order shear deformation plate theory in conjunction with static contact laws is developed. Test materials were CFRP with cross-ply laminate $[O_4/{\theta}_4]_S$, $[90_4/{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking sequences and angle-ply laminate $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$, $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking deguences with $2^t{\times}40^w{\times}100^l(mm)$ dimension. As a result, stacking seguence and fiber orientation were found to have a significant effect on the interlaminar stresses in composite laminates.

  • In this paper, the impact damage behavior of USN-150B carbon/epoxy composite laminates subjected to high velocity impact was studied experimentally and numerically. Square composite laminates stacked with $[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$ quasi-symmetric and $[0/90]_{ns}$ cross-ply stacking sequences and a conical shape projectile with steel core, copper skin and lead filler were considered. First high-velocity impact tests were conducted under various test conditions. Three tests were repeated under the same impact condition. Projectile velocity before and after penetration were measured by infrared ray sensors and magnetic sensors. High-speed camera shots and C-Scan images were also taken to measure the projectile velocities and to obtain the information on the damage shapes of the projectile and the laminate specimens. Next, the numerical simulation was performed using explicit finite element code LS-DYNA. Both the projectile and the composite laminate were modeled using three-dimensional solid elements. Residual velocity history of the impact projectile and the failure shape and extents of the laminates were predicted and systematically examined. The results of this study can provide the understanding on the penetration process of laminated composites during ballistic impact, as well as the damage amount and modes. These were thought to be utilized to predict the decrease of mechanical properties and also to help mitigate impact damage of composite structures.

  • Based on the basic equations of elasticity, free-edge effects on stresses in cross-ply laminated plates are found by using the state space method. The laminates are subjected to uniaxial-uniform extension plate, which is a typical example of general plane strain problem. The study takes into account material constants of all individual material layers and the state equation of a laminate is solved analytically in the through thickness direction. By this approach, a composite plate may be composed of an arbitrary number of orthotropic layers, each of which may have different material properties and thickness. The solution provides a continuous displacement and inter-laminar stress fields across all material interfaces and an approxiamte prediction to the singularity of stresses occurring in the boundary layer region of a free-edge. Numerical solutions are obtained and compared with the results obtained from an alternative numerical method.

  • A 1kW-class horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) rotor blade is taken into account to investigate elastic characteristics in 2-D. The elastic blade field is composed of symmetric cross-ply laminated composite material. Blade element momentum theory is applied to obtain the boundary conditions pressuring the blade, and the plane stress elasticity problem is formulated in terms of two displacement parameters with mixed boundary conditions. For the elastic characteristics a fair of differential equations are derived based on the elastic theory. The domain is divided by triangular and rectangular elements due to the complexity of the blade configuration, and a finite element method is developed for the governing equations to search approximate solutions. The results describe that the elastic behavior is deeply influenced by the layered angle of the middle laminate and the stability of the blade can be improved by controlling the layered angle of laminates, which can be evaluated by the mathematical approach.

  • An apparatus was developed to repetitively apply a -196 $^{\circ}C$ thermal load to coupon-sized mechanical test specimens. Using this device, IM7/5250-4 (carbon / bismaleimide) cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates were submerged in liquid nitrogen (L$N_2$) 400 times. Ply-by-Ply micro-crack density, laminate modulus, and laminate strength were measured as a function of thermal cycles. Quasi-isotropic samples of IM7/977-3 (carbon / epoxy) composite were also manually cycled between liquid nitrogen and an oven set at 120 $^{\circ}C$ for 130 cycles to determine whether including elevated temperature in the thermal cycle significantly altered the degree or location of micro-cracking. In response to thermal cycling, both materials micro-cracked extensively in the surface plies followed by sparse cracking of the inner plies. The tensile modulus of the IM7/5250-4 specimens was unaffected by thermal cycling, but the tensile strength of two of the lay-ups decreased by as much as 8.5 %.
