'Mansoo' is a late-season pear cultivar with extra large and high quality fruit of long storability, which was released by National Horticultural Research Institute in 1995. The cultivar originated from the cross between 'Danbae' and 'Okusankichi' at Suwon in 1978, had been under regional adaptability test at nine areas in the name of 'Wonkyo Na-15' for 4 years since 1992. It was vigorous in tree growth and upright in tree shape. Its flower bud is easily maintained, resulting in higher productivity than 'Danbae' and 'Okusankichi'. It bloomed a day later than 'Niitaka', and showed cross-compatibility with 'Niitaka', 'Chojuro' and some other varieties. Harvesting time of 'Mansoo' is late October in Suwon. The fruit shape is oblate and skin color is light yellowish brown. The fruit weighed 600-700 g and has 12-13% soluble solids content. The flesh is soft, juicy, and has negligible grit. It is resistant to black leaf rot (Alternaria kikuchiana Tanaka).
This study was conducted to find out the scientific maize breeding protocol for developing high performing single cross hybrid using introduced U.S. elite inbred lines; the pattern of inheritance, heterosis and heritabilities of six agronomic traits were studied in the progenies derived from five crosses (Mo17/B14A, Va85/B73, C103/ND203, FR35/Oh43, Wf9/A632). Among the five cross combinations, the cross combination of Mo17/B14A showed the highest heterosis for the most agronomic traits. Among 6 agronomic traits, the grain yield showed the highest heterosis effect in most cross combinations. Most of the agronomic traits in this study showed more than 50% heritability for six cross combinations, with an exception of the ear length trait. In conclusion, since Mo17/B14A showed excellent performance for most of the agronomic traits, these inbred lines were desirable combination and regarded as superior germ plasm sources for F1 hybrid development. The results of current studies will be utilized for developing high performing single cross hybrid from maize inbred lines, and will be used for the further genetic analysis of agronomic traits and maize breeding programs.
To acquaint correct information about the fertilizability and analyze S-allele based genetic diversity among Korean apples, we investigated self-incompatibility genotypes by PCR and cross-pollination tests in field. As a consequence, S-genotypes of Korean apples were distributed within narrow genetic diversity as $S_1S_3$ for 'Hongro' and 'Saenara'; $S_1S_9$ for 'Gamhong' and 'Manbok'; $S_3S_5$ for 'Seokwang'; $S_3S_9$ for 'Sunhong', 'Seohong', 'Chukwang', and 'Hwahong'. Coupled with cross-pollination experiments in field, our results provide support for the view that apples are fully compatible when both of their S-loci differ and semi-compatible when they carry one different and one identical S-locus. Furthermore, the results of this study indicate that S-alleles have to be extended to various genotypes for Korean apple breeding.
The data on milk yield of 1837 healthy dairy cows of different genetic groups raised in Central Cattle Breeding and Dairy farms, Savar, Dhaka for the period from 1978 to 1992 were analyzed from first to 6th lactation. The mean (SE) milk yields of 100 days, 305 days, total lactation and total life time ($928{\pm}48.6kg$, $2,188{\pm}201.81kg$, $2,661{\pm}385.46kg$ and $11,134{\pm}2,916kg$) respectively, were in pure bred Friesian found to be highest among all genetic groups. The corresponding means in indigenous cows, $334{\pm}12.92kg$, $946{\pm}64.44kg$, $635{\pm}16.31kg$ and $3,934{\pm}402.21kg$ were the lowest. Among the $F_1$, $F_2$ and $F_3$ cross-breds, the $F_1$ half bred Friesian showed the highest performance in milk yield. The half bred Friesian in successive generations yielded low milk. Similar trend was obtained incase of cross-bred with other breeds such as Jersey, Sindhi and Sahiwal. From the over all results, it can be concluded that the performance in respect to milk yield of pure bred Friesian and their $F_1$ half bred with indigenous and Sahiwal were superior over the $F_2$ or $F_3$ cross-breds between Fresian and any other breed irrespective of proportion of blood. The performance in respect to production of indigenous local cow was found to be almost similar with that of Sahiwal breed.
In a previous study, we mapped 12 QTLs for 1,000 grain weight (TGW) in the 172 $BC_2F_2$ lines derived from a cross between Oryza sativa ssp. Japonica cv. Hwaseongbyeo and O. rufipogon. These QTLs explained 5.4 - 11.4% of the phenotypic variance for TGW. Marker-aided selection combined with backcrosses was employed to develop QTL-NILs for each QTL. $BC_2F_2$ lines with each target QTL were backcrossed to Hwaseongbyeo twice and then allowed to self to produce $BC_4F_5$ populations. SSR markers linked to TGW were employed to select QTL-NILs with the respective target QTL. Six QTL-NILs with the recurrent parent, Hwaseongbyeo were evaluated for nine traits for three years from 2007 and 2009. Differences were observed between each of the 6 QTL-NILs and Hwaseongbyeo in TGW. In addition to TGW, these QTL-NILs displayed differences in other agronomic traits possibly indicating a tight linkage of genes controlling these traits. The direction of the QTL for TGW in 6 QTL-NILs was consistent as in the $BC_2F_2$ lines from the same cross. Difference in TGW between each of the QTL-NILs and Hwaseongbyeo was associated with the difference in one or two grain shape traits; grain length, grain width, and grain thickness. SSR markers linked to the QTL for TGW will facilitate selection of the grain shape character in a breeding program to diversify grain shape and provide the foundation for map-based gene isolation. Also, the QTL-NILs developed in this report and the progenies from crosses between the QTL-NILs will be useful in clarifying epistatic interactions among QTLs for TGW.
To develop clubroot resistant Chinese cabbage inbreds, IT 033820, a clubroot resistant turnip, was cross pollinated with a Chinese cabbage inbred of BP 079. From 2005, conventional breeding and microspore culture method performed using these F1 plants as parental materials. In 2007, conventional breeding method resulted in 21 F3 inbreds. After inoculation of clubroot race 4, one inbred showing 83% resistant was selected and registered as 'onkyo 20036ho' in 2008. From 2005, we scanned hybrid cultivars using micro spore culture and developed many doubled haploid (DH) lines in Chinese cabbage. Using Chinese cultivar of 'oong-baek 2ho' we developed 26 DH inbreds in 2007. After inoculation of clubroot race 4, one DH inbred showing 77% resistant and yellow inner leaf color was selected and registered as 'onkyo 20034'in 2008. We found conventional breeding method was effective using introduced germplasm showing low germination. However, when using hybrid cultivar as starting material, microspore culture method was powerful for developing various inbred in short time.
Selection procedures for breeding genic male sterile lines for resistance to both Phytophthora blight caused by Phytophthora capsici and bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas euvesicatoria were executed to $F_3$ and $F_4$ generations derived from a cross between a Phytophthora resistant genic male sterile (GMS) breeding line and a bacterial spot and Phytophthora resistant breeding line. Resistance to P. capsici was originally introduced from KC294(CM334) and KC263(AC2258), the well-known sources of resistance to P. capsici. Resistance to bacterial spot was introduced from KC47(PI244670). GMS lines with high resistance to P. capsici were obtained and the selected lines are expected to be quantitatively resistant also to bacterial spot.
A set of rice recombinant inbred lines was developed from a cross between a Tongil type variety, Nonganbyeo, and an indica variety, BG276, by the single seed descent method. The number of the lines in the population was 272. All the agronomic characters studied except ADV (alkali-digestion value) showed continuous variation among the RILs, implying that their inheritance mode should be quantitative. The patterns of the variation in the RILs were either normal or skewed distribution. ADVs of RILs were segregated into two groups with 1:1 ratio, indicating that ADVs in this KIL population might be controlled by one major gene. Transgressive variations were also observed in all characters. Heritability values of the characters varied from 0.488 in brown/rough rice ratio to 0.895 in alkali-digestion value. In the analysis of genotypic and phenotypic correlations, the character of yield was positively correlated with 8 different agronomic characters. The number of panicles per hill was negatively correlated with culm length, panicle length, and number of spikelets per panicle. Grain length was positively correlated with grain width, grain thickness, grain length/width ratio, white belly, ADV, and amylose. However, grain length/width ratio was negatively correlated with grain width. White core was also negatively correlated with white belly and ADV.

A new standard rose cultivar "Peach Pudding" was bred from the cross between deep red standard cultivar 'Red Sandra' and light pink standard cultivar 'Dolores' at the National Horticulture Research Institute. The cross was made in 2000 and "Peach Pudding" was finally selected in 2006 after investigating characteristics for three years from 2002 to 2006. 'Peach Pudding', a pink standard cultivar has good flower shape and fashionable flower color. The major characteristics of this cultivar are 113.1 stems/$m^2$/year in yield, 60.6 cm in length of cut flower, 8.7 cm in flower diameter, 38.6 in petal number, and 12.8 days in vase life. This cultivar can be propagated by both cutting and grafting. The consumer's preference of this cultivar is relatively higher than that of control cultivar, 'New Miracle'.
