This case report presents the case of a 49-year-old man who presented to our level I trauma center after sustaining injuries in an altercation with local law enforcement in which he was shot with a less lethal bean bag and tased. In a primary survey, a penetrating left supraclavicular wound was noted in addition to a taser dart lodged in his flank. No other traumatic findings were noted in a secondary survey. Given hemodynamic stability, completion imaging was obtained, revealing a foreign body in the left lung, a left open clavicle fracture, a C5 tubercle fracture, a possible grade I left vertebral injury, and a left first rib fracture. Soft tissue gas was seen around the left subclavian and axillary arteries, although no definitive arterial injury was identified. The bean bag projectile was embedded in the parenchyma of the left lung on cross-sectional imaging. The patient underwent thoracotomy for removal of the projectile and hemostasis. A thoracotomy was chosen as the operative approach due to concerns about significant bleeding upon foreign body removal. A chest tube was placed and subsequently removed on postoperative day 5. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 7. At a 2-week outpatient follow-up visit, the patient was doing well. This case report is the first to describe this outcome for a drag-stabilized bean bag. Although law enforcement officers utilize bean bag projectiles as a "less lethal" means of crowd control and protection, these ballistics pose significant risk and can result in serious injury.
The KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) located in KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) was recently constructed following the site investigation in 2003. Its dimension is 180 m in length, 6 m in width, and 6 m in height, and it has a horseshoe-like cross-sec-lion and is located in the ground to the depth of 90 m. When the tunnel was dug into the ground with 100 m in length, fresh rocks, weathered rocks and fracture-filling materials were taken and examined by mineralogical and chemical analyses. There are phyllosilicate minerals such as illite, smectite and chlorite including calcite, which are filling some faults and cracks of the KURT rock. The illite and smectite usually coexist in the fracture, where their content ratio is different according to which mineral is predominant. There are high concentrations of U and Th in the rocks coated with iron-oxides and filled with secondary materials as compared with those in the fresh rocks. It seems that the radionuclides, which are slowly leached from the parent rocks or exist as a dissolved form in the groundwater and hydrothermal solution, may have been migrated along the fractures and thereafter selectively sorbed and coprecipitated on the iron-oxides and the fracture-filling materials. These results will be very useful far the evaluation of environmental factors affecting the nuclides migration and retardation when long-term safety is considered to the geological disposal of high-level radioactive wastes in the future.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture strength of porcelain laminate veneer with various lingual extention length when incisal restoring. Sixty recently extracted, intact maxillary incisors were used and stored in a physiologic saline solution from the time of extraction. Seating form was preparation at the labial surface of each tooth with a water-cooled round diamond bur. Standard block was formed with 32 gauge and 24 gauge wax at tooth labial and lingual surface. Lingual extention length differed according to each group. (group I : 0.5mm, group II : 1 mm, group III : 2mm, group IV : 0mm) All tooth specimens were impressioned with examix(GC Inc., Japan). Refractory cast were maked with refractory die material(Ceramco Inc., U.S.A.) Laminate porcelain (Ceramco II Veneer porcelain, Ceramco Inc., U.S.A.) was condensed in refractory die cast and baked according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Each surface was contoured with low speed diamond bur according to guide block. All porcelain specimens were sandblasted and ultrasonically cleaned in distlled water for 3 minutes. Then, all porcelain specimen were etched with 8% hydrofluoric acid for 5 minutes. Sixty specimens were bonded with composite resin cement(Choice Porcelain Veneer System, Bisco Inc., U.S.A.) according to manufacture's directions. The fracture loads of the specimen were measured by Instron universal testing machine. The mean values of fracture loads for the groups were statistically compared by Duncan's multiful range test. The result were as follows : Mean fracture strengths of each group were 86.95Mpa in no lingual extention group, 44.98Mpa in 0.5mm lingual extention group, 27.47Mpa in 1mm lingual extention group, 19.61Mpa in 2mm lingual extention group. There was a statistically significant difference between all group(p<0.01).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acid etching on the surface appearance and fracture toughness of five glass ionomer cements. Five kinds of commercially available glass ionomer cements including chemical curing filling type, chemical curing lining type, chemical curing metal reinforced type, light curing tilling type and light curing lining type were used for this study. The specimens for SEM study were fabricated by treating each glass ionomer cement with either visible light curing or self curing after being inserted into a rubber mold (diameter 4mm, depth 1mm). Some of the specimens were etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 0, 15, 30, 60, go seconds, at 5 minutes, 1 hour and 1 day after mixing of powder and liquid. Unetched ones comprised the control group and the others were the experimental groups. The surface texture was examined by using scanning electron microscope at 20 kV. (S-2300, Hitachi Co., Japan). The specimens for fracture toughness were fabricated by curing of each glass ionomer cement previously inserted into a metal mold for the single edge notch specimen according to the ASTME399. They were subjected to a three-point bend test after etching for 0, 30, 60, and 90 seconds at 5 minutes-, 1 hour-and 1 day-lapse after the fabrication of the specimens. The plane strain fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) was determined by three-point bend test which was conducted with cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min using Instron universal testing machine (Model No. 1122) following seven days storage of the etched specimens under $37^{\circ}C$, 100% humidity condition. Following conclusions were drawn. 1. In unetched control group, crack was present, but the surface was generally smooth. 2. Deterioration of the surface appearance such as serious dissolving of gel matrix and loss of glass particles occured as the etching time was increased beyond 15 s following Immediate etching of chemical curing type of glass ionomer cements. 3. Etching after 1 h, and 1 d reduced surface damage, 15 s, and 30s etch gave rough surface appearance without loss of glass particle of chemical curing type of glass ionomer cements. 4. Light curing type glass ionomer cement was etched by acid, but there was no difference in surface appearances according to various waiting periods. 5. It was found that the value of plane stram fracture toughness of glass ionomer cements was highest in the light curing filling type as $1.79\;MNm^{-1.5}$ followed by the light curing lining type, chemical curing metal reinforced type, chemical curing filling type and chemical curing lining type. 6. The value of plane stram fracture toughness of the chemical curing lining type glass ionomer cement etched after 5 minutes was lower than those of the cement etched after 1 hour or day or unetched (P < 0.05). 7. Light curing glass ionomer cement showed Irregular fractured surface and chemical curing cement showed smooth fractured surface.

Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was shown to be the powerful tool for nano-scale characterization of a fracture surface . AFM was used to study cross sectional profiles and dimensions of fatigue striations in 2017-T351 aluminum alloy. Their widths (SW) and heights (SH) were measured from the cross sectional profiles of three-dimension AFM images. The following results that will be helpful to understand the fatigue crack growth mechanism were obtained. (1) Coincidence of the crack growth rate with the striation width was found down to the growth rate of 10-5 mm/cycle. (2) The relation of SH=0.085(SW)1.2 was obtained. (3) The ratio of the striation height to its width SH/SW did not depend on the stress intensity factor range K and the stress ratio R. (4) Not only the SW but also the SH changed linearly with the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) when plotted in log-log scale. From these results, the applicability of the AFM to nano-fractography is discussed.
Purpose: We evaluate the characteristics of vertebral body fractures in two level flexion-distraction injuries of the thoracolumbar spine Methods: The findings of radiographs, computed tomographs, and MRIs of 43 patients with flexion-distraction injuries combined with vertebral body fractures were retrospectively evaluated. We divided the patients with bursting fractures into two groups, the distractive group (posterior vertebral height ratio >1) and the compressive group (vertebral height ratio <1). Results: There were 23 compression fractures and 20 bursting fractures. In bursting fractures, the distractive group had 5 cases, and the compressive group 15 cases. In 24 cases (55.8%), the interspinous distances were widened. The average of the canal encroachment was 4% in the distractive group and 40% in the compressive group. At last follow-up, the average loss of correction was 2.0 degree in compression fractures and 2.7 degree in bursting fractures. Conclusion: The configurations of vertebral body fractures in flexion-distraction injuries of the thoracolumbar spine were varied as to the location of the axis of flexion. Because bursting fractures in flexion-distraction injuries had distractive or compressive features, one should consider that in establishing operative plan.

The SM45C metallic coupons have been tested under static tensile loading with acoustic emission (AE) as the load-deflection curve mainly. In this study, we used AE to detect the yielding of material and AE techniques was applied to rapidly estimate the mechanical characteristics of a material. First, coupons without an artificial defect were tested at different cross-head speed. For all cases in this analysis, yielding point of SM45C coupons did not appear definitely compared to mild steel, whereas coupons start to generate AE counts upon yielding. So all cases are normalized to know the possibility of accelerated life test of a material. And next, coupons with different from sizes of circular hole defects were tested at the same cross-head speed of 5 mm/min. Results were classified into 3 classes and analyzed by AE amplitude & signal strength as a function of time. Summarizing the specific conclusions, we need to additional research considering plate with width-ratio in order to estimate the fracture mechanism.
In this study, effects of forming angle and friction coefficient on a initiation of the Mannesmann hole defect were analyzed by using a response surface method. The maximum effective plastic strain at center point of specimen is utilized for the prediction of the starting point of crack occurrence, which is suggested by the comparison of integrals of four different ductile fracture models between the histories of the effective plastic strain at center point. It was revealed that the principal stress at the center is the dominant element to the increase of the effective plastic strain. It was also verified by the simulation results from the comparison of experiment and simulation. It is provided that the forming angle of 25 degrees and the spreading angle of 1 degree can be a proper design condition without an occurrence of internal hole defect and an excessive slip.

The corrosion and strength degradation characteristics of 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steels were studied under $650^{\circ}C$ in $76%N_2+6%O_2+16%CO_2+2%SO_2$ gas condition up to 500 hrs. Corroded specimens were characterized by weight gain, scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), and X-ray diffraction(XRD). The tensile test was conducted to evaluate the mechanical strength and fracture mode with corrosion at high temperature. As the results of the experiments, thick Fe-rich oxide layers over $200{\mu}m$ were formed on the surface within 500 hrs. The thick oxide layers are formed with reduction of the cross-sectional area of the specimens. Thus, the strength tended to decrease with reduction of the cross-sectional area.
Effect of silicon infiltration on the bend and tensile strength of 2D cross-ply carbon-carbon composites are studied. It is observed that bend strength higher than tensile strength in both types of composite is due to the different mode of fracture and loading direction. After silicon infiltrations bend and tensile strength suddenly decreases of carbon-carbon composites. This is due to the fact that, after silicon infiltration, silicon in the immediate vicinity of carbon forms the strong bond between carbon and silicon by formation silicon carbide and un-reacted silicon as free silicon. Therefore, these composites consist of three components carbon, silicon carbide and silicon. Due to mismatch between these three components secondary cracks developed and these cracks propagate from $90^{\circ}$ oriented plies to $0^{\circ}$ oriented plies by damaging the fibers (i.e., in-situ fiber damages). Hence, secondary cracks and in-situ fiber damages are responsible for degradation of mechanical properties of carbon-carbon composites after silicon infiltration which is revealed by microstructure investigation study by scanning electron microscope.
