  • Seedless grape (Vitis spp.) cultivars with large berries can be developed from hypo- and hypertetraploid seedlings. The low occurrence of hypo- and hypertetraploid seedlings, however, has impeded the breeding of new hypo- and hypertetraploid grape varieties. In order to establish hypoand hypertetraploid seedlings, we examined the chromosome numbers in seedlings of self-, open-, and cross-pollinated hypotetraploid 'Takao' and hypertetraploid 'RB9127K' grape. Three of the five seedlings (60%) from 'Takao' were aneuploid, including one with 74 chromosomes (2n=4x-2) and two with 75 chromosomes (2n=4x-1). In 'RB9127K', 26 of the 193 seedlings (13.5%) were aneuploid, including three seedlings with 75 chromosomes (2n=4x-1), 18 with 77 chromosomes (2n=4x+1), and five with 78 chromosomes (2n=4x+2). The high frequency of aneuploids from 'Takao' and 'RB9127K' grape indicates that meiosis in hypo- and hypertetraploid female parents is prone to segregation error. These results suggest that various hypo- or hypertetraploid seedlings can be successfully produced using hypo- or hypertetraploid grapes as female parents, which can contribute to the development of new seedless grape varieties with large berries.

  • A new cultivar potted miniature rose (Rosa hybrida) 'Tiny Ball' was selected out of cross combination 1999 and 2002 at Gumi Floricultural Experiment Station. Characteristics trials were conducted three times from 2003 to 2006. 'Tiny Ball' came from the combination that '990905' crossed to 'Manish'. New cultivar has pink and white flower color and the shape of flower is similar to tiny ball. The number of flower petals and flowers per pot are more than those of 'POULra022' as comparison cultivar. This cultivar has low plant height without treatment of plant retardant materials, so the high quality grade ratio of potted rose is higher than that of comparison cultivar.

  • Rice grain shape is one of the key components of grain yield and market value. An understanding of the genetic basis of the variation in grain shape could be used to improve grain shape. In this study, we developed a total of 265 F2 individuals derived from a cross between japonica cultivars (Josaeng-jado and Langi) and used this population for quantitative trait locus (QLT) analysis. Correlation analysis was performed to identify relationships between grain traits (GL: grain length, GW: grain width, L/W: ratio of length to width, TGW: 1,000 grain weight). The grain shape was positively correlated with GL and TGW, and negatively correlated with GW. In QTL analysis associated with grain shape, one QTL for GL, qGL5, detected on chromosome 5, explained 20.3% of the phenotypic variation (PV), while two QTLs, qGW5 (PV=36.1) and qGW7 (PV=26.1), for GW were identified on chromosomes 5 and 7, respectively. Evaluation of the effects of each of the QTLs on the grain shape in the population showed a significant difference in the grain size in positive lines compared with the lines without the QTLs. According to the QTL combination of the allelic-types, the grain shape of the tested lines varied from semi-round type to long spindle-shaped type. The results of this study extend our knowledge about the genetic pool governing the diversity of grain shape in japonica cultivars and could be used to improve the grain shape of this species through marker-assisted selective breeding in Korea.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the variation of growth and quality characteristics in colored rice from 178 accessions and to develop useful, basic rice breeding data by classifying these germplasm characteristics via principal component (PC) analysis. The coefficient of variation of the 178colored rice accessions were the highest for panicle length (PL) and protein contents, followed by length-width ratio (LWR), 1000-grain weight (TGW), culm length (CL), and amylose contents, whereas the lowest was for the number of panicles per hill (NP), which is a yield component. The results from the PC analysis exhibited eigenvalues and contributions respective to each PC as follows: PC1, 2.06 and 29.49%; PC2, 1.31 and 18.75%; PC3, 1.21 and 17.36%; PC4, 1.01 and 14.38%. The eigenvalues of four PCs were over 1.0, and their cumulative contributions were 79.98%, which completes the necessary condition for evaluation of the 178 colored rice accessions. Cluster analysis showed cluster I as the largest, which included 79 accessions, while clusters II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII comprised 46, 19, 13, 4, 8, and 9 accessions, respectively. Moreover, dark brown accessions were dispersed in clusters I and II, and many resources of purple seed coat color were found in clusters V, VI, and VII. Particularly, cluster V had resources of only black and purple seed coat colors. Resources of cluster VII were found to have a relatively small average CL, PL, and LWR; notably, cluster V had the smallest average TGW, and cluster IV the lowest NP but the highest TGW. Finally, considering the yield potential, growth characteristics, heading stage, and color during breeding of colored rice, we obtained the following conclusions: cluster VII is suitable for breeding of colored rice; cross breeding among clusters I, II, and VII has a high yield potential; and it is possible to produce a superior color by cross breeding plants from cluster V and VI.

  • In order to identify the best superior cross combination of breeder stocks for broiler production, combining ability test and analyses of phenotypic performances for parent stocks were examined on records of 1,440 broiler chicken which were produced from 4 parental strains and 3 maternal strains at Hanhyup Poultry Breeding Farm from September 28, 1978 to January 5, 1979. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There was not found heterosis effect in viability but it seems to be desirable to select Hubbard strain in paternal line to improve viability. 2. As the paternal and maternal lines, selection of Ross strain showed the best paternal and maternal performance and the best general combining ability in body weight at 8 weeks of age is expected to be able to improve body weight of it s crossbred And the most superior cross combinations based on the specific combining ability and performance of rack crossbred were identified as Hubbard x Ross ana Ross x Hypeco crossbreds. 3. The best paternal and maternal lines on the smallest feed consumption for 8 weeks were Hubbard and Ross strains, and Hypeco strain, respectively. Especially Hubbard x Hypeco cross combination was proved as the smallest feed consumption compared with other cross combinations. 4. In feed requirement per Kg body weight increase, Hubbard strain for paternal line, Hypeco strain for naternal line, and cross combinations of Hubbard x Hypeco, Hubbard x Ross and Ross x Hypeco were certified as the most superiors. 5. Also superior cross combinations of Hubbard x Hypeco and Hubbard x Ross earned the most profit per bird through economic analysis. According to results as shown above, this experiment seems to be able to reach a such conclusion that production of superior cross combinations Hubbard x Ross, Hubbard x Hypeco and Ross x Hypeco through selection of Ross and Hubbard strains to paternal line and Hypeco and Ross strains for maternal line may become to considerable improvement for important economic characters of broiler; viability, body weight, feed consumption and feed requirement.

  • A new red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivar, "Mihong" which has late bolting and deep red leaf color was developed from a cross of "Danhongongchukmyeon" (deep red but early bolting and low yield) and "Hajicheongchukmyeon" (late bolting and high yield). The selection and breeding of advanced lines were done by pedigree method during 2000-2006. The advanced lines were evaluated for yield and adaptability in Korea (Gangwon, Kyunggi, Chungbuk, Kyungnam, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeju) from 2007 to 2008. The "Mihong" has gray seed color, traverse elliptic leaves and deep red color. Compared to "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon", marketable yield of "Mihong" was higher by 2% (at 291 g per plant) as a 17.3 ton/ha, but with particularly improved good expression of deep red leaf color in high temperature cultivation in the field. The shelf-life of "Mihong" was three weeks longer than "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" at $4^{\circ}C$. The amount of anthocyanin content of "Mihong" were higher than with "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" at 28.9 mg/100 g. Especially the degree of leaf hardness in "Mihong" showed $26.9kg/cm^2$ compared to "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon". therefore, its taste is better, more crispy, and sweeter than "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" This new cultivar "Mihong" can be cultivated in all year around even if summer time cultivation.
