Most of plastic film house plots in Korea have salinity problems caused by salt accumulations associated with continuous cropping including the heavy applications of chemical fertilizers, and high evapotranspiration. The objective of this study was to investigate soil properties and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thunb.) productivity in plastic film houses as influenced by the short-term crop rotation in the continuous watermelon-cultivated soils. The short-term rotational crops selected were corn, Chinese cabbage, radish, young radish, lettuce, spinach, and onion. Soil pH increased in most plots where a short-term crop was added to the crop rotation, except where radish was added. The content of soil organic matter significantly decreased in the lettuce-cultivated plot. The available phosphorus content in the soils increased with the cultivations of spinach and onion. Exchangeable Ca and Mg tended to increase in most of plots where a short-term rotational crop was grown, whereas the exchangeable K was clearly reduced by more than 50% in the same plots. Cultivation of rotational crops during the post-harvest season significantly decreased the electrical conductivity (EC) and the concentrations of soluble anions, such as chloride ($Cl^-$), nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$), and sulfate ($SO{_4}^{2-}$) in the soils. In particular, the EC decrease was related with the decrease in soil $K^+$ to $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ratio. In all plots cultivated with the shot-term rotational crops, the ratios of bacteria to fungi (B/F) increased. However, the improvement in soil properties after adding a rotational crop did not result in a clear improvement in watermelon quantity or quality as measured by fruit weight and sugar content. Therefore, the addition of short-term rotational crops to a continuous watermelon cropping system would be beneficial to improve target soil properties in plastic film house plots studied.
An accurate analysis of nutrient balance in different cropping systems is necessary for improving soil fertilities, causing higher crop yields and quality. This study was carried out to investigate the nutrient balance, changes in soil properties, and their effects on crop yield in long-term field cultivation under mono- and rotation-cropping systems (MCS and RCS, respectively). The analytical results of the soil properties showed that the application of mineral fertilizers alone in the MCS leads the reduction of soil CEC, exchangeable Ca, and microbial biomass C and N. Compared with the MCS of soybean, the RCS of soybean and barley significantly improved the soil properties, which increased crop yield. It might be due to the barley residue added to the RCS soil. Mean nutrient balances for 4 years were -55.9 kg N, +34.7 kg $P_2O_5$, and -0.3 kg $K_2O$$ha^{-1}$ for the MCS and +19.7 kg N, +107.4 kg $P_2O_5$, and -48.6 kg $K_2O$$ha^{-1}$ for the RCS, respectively. These nutrient imbalances mean that conventional fertilizer recommendations were inadequate for maintaining soil nutrient balance. From these results, we can conclude that the crop rotation may change comprehensive physical, chemical, and biological soil properties. These changes could affect the nutrient balance and then the crop yield.

This experiment was carried out to increase the utility and productivity of forage crop as to investigate the rotation system which is suitable to cultivat at the alpine area. The treatments were 9 crops combinations including corn - rye treatment. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Rye can be cultivated satisfactorily at cold and high altitude areas such as Tae Kwan Ryong. 2. Corn, to be raised as a second crop after rye in the same year, does not have to be early (short) or medium maturity varieties in the high alpine area. 3. It is possible to increase the harvest by 30% in terms of dry melter or green crop yield through raising two crops, rye and corn, in the same year. 4. Maturity period or growth conditions of corn. as a tropical crop and the best forage crop, can improve or worsen acording to the external circumstance, such as low temperature resulting from high atitude.

Within the paper, an overview of organic farming in Europe countries is given and the Principle and skills of organic agriculture is shortly reported with special regard to Germany. Our self-sufficiency of food has become less than $30{\%}$ and our nation is highly dependant on world's grain market for food. which is unstable in long term due to the world population growth faster than food production. Therefore, it is a great possibility that food might become a political weapon by way of its global shortage. its purchasing difficulty in international free trade market. and the resultant price rising. Our maximal capability of food production has become the most outstanding problem in the dimension of future food security. It would be the utmost scheme for maximal production of food to realize the maximal utilization of arable land through the enlargement of sufficient farming land and the conversion of rotation system for the more grain production. Extensional enlargement of arable land can be positively executed through the development of farming land in domestic and abroad countries. The readjustment of arable land and the installation or irrigation and drainage system can enforce the farming basement for maximal utilization of arable land through the improved rotation between paddy and upland. The prevention policy against farming land encroachment should be strictly executed through grain production encouragement on resting or marginal lands and regulation of utilization conversion for the other than food production on high grade farming lands. It is also required urgently to develope high yielding and high quality varieties through advanced genetic technology for the improvement of unit area yield, especially of wheat, corn. and soybean we import in large quantity The maximal utilization of arable land for the highest production of food can be realized through rational rotation system, the most adaptable crop cultivation on the suitable land, and the most optimal fertilization through the GIS analysis of agricultural environment information on the basis of the computerized soil resource data on super detailed soil maps(1:5000) surveyed plot by plot of whole nation.

In 2006, the effect of soil pH adjustment on control of common scab of potato caused by Streptomyces spp. was evaluated in the field. Soil with an original pH 5.7 was treated with sulfur of 42 kg/10a and calcium hydroxide of 81.6 kg/10a and 184.5 kg/10a to adjust pH 5.0, 6.0 and 6.5, respectively. Additionally, the effect of gypsum (522 kg/10a) on soil pH and disease severity was examined. The soil pH of sulfur treatment plot was continuously declined from 5.13 at tuber initiation time to 5.01 at harvest. The disease severity of sulfur treatment plot was relatively low (22.8%) and the marketable yield of that was high (90.5%). By contrast, the soil pHs treated with calcium hydroxide (81.6 kg/10a and 184.5 kg/10a) were increased (pH 6.06 and 6.49, respectively) at harvest. In addition, calcium hydroxide treatment plots showed higher disease severities (51.0% and 61.1%), and lower marketable yields (55.7% and 37.0%). Meanwhile, the soil pH of gypsum treatment plot was not changed until harvest, and the disease severity and the marketable yield were not significantly different from those of control. The effect of crop rotation was also evaluated with four crops such as welsh onion, soybean, corn and Chinese cabbage. These crops were planted in the infested field from 2005 to 2007, and potatoes were planted in the same field in 2008. The disease severities of potatoes produced after rotations with welsh onion, soybean, corn and Chinese cabbage for 3 years were 13.1%, 16.7%, 28.9% and 30.2%, respectively. However, the disease severity of 73.1% was shown in continuous cropping of potato for 3 years. In addition, similar effects were exhibited in the marketable yield. These results demonstrate that the adjustment of soil pH and crop rotation might be very useful tools to control common scab of potato.
'Hwawang' is an early maturing and short statured rice cultivar adaptable to the rice-cash crop rotation system that was developed by the rice breeding team of the Department of Southern Crop, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea, in 2012. This cultivar was derived from the cross of YR25867 (Hitomebore//YR21247-B-B-B-49-1/Sasanishiki BL4) and YR25866 (Akidagomachi//YR21247-B-B-B-49-1/Sasanishiki BL4) during the 2005/2006 winter season and was fixed as a homozygous line by a doubled haploid breeding system. In the replicated yield trial in 2009, a promising line (YR26253Acp26-1) showed a good phenotype and high yield potential, and so it was selected and designated as 'Milyang256'. The local adaptability test of 'Milyang256' was carried out at three locations from 2010 to 2012. It was named 'Hwawang' and had a high head rice ratio and good eating quality. The culm length of 'Hwawang' averaged 62 cm during the yield trials and was 10 cm shorter than that of 'Keumo'. The number of spikelets per panicle of 'Hwawang' was significantly lower than that of 'Keumo', but the number of tillers per hill was higher. This variety showed resistance to bacterial blight disease but was moderately susceptible to both leaf and neck blast. The milled rice yield of 'Hwawang' was 452 kg/10 a at the late transplanting stage of the local adaptability test. Thus, 'Hwawang' is well adapted to the rice-cash crop rotation system in the southern plain area. (Registration No. 5106)
BACKGROUND: Crop rotation is often used as a solution to eradicate nematodes in soils used in plastic film houses for long-term cultivation of oriental melon. However, it is not clear if the double-cropping is effective in reducing nematode populations in soils. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nematode population in plastic film house soil was measured during oriental melon cultivation from April to July in short term crop rotation systems of oriental melon. Double-cropping of chinese cabbage in open-field for 3-4 months following oriental melon in plastic film houses could not prevent the build-up of high population density of nematodes. However, double-cropping of dropwort in flooded soil for 3-4 months following oriental melon in plastic film houses could effectively reduce the nematode population during the successive year of oriental melon cultivation. The reduced nematode population in soils of oriental melon-dropwort double-cropping system was continued until the mid season of progressive year oriental melon cultivation. Application of nematicide to soil before growing oriental melon in the oriental melon-dropwort double-cropping was very effective in preventing the build-up of high population density of nematode in plastic film house soils. CONCLUSION: Short-term introduction of crop rotation was not effective in suppression of high population density of nematodes in plastic film house soils of long-term year-to-year production of oriental melon. For securing the soil productivity and sustainability of plastic film house, various physical, chemical, and agronomic practices should be properly combined together.

Reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from upland crop field as well as paddy field is being required, but little information on GHG emissions according to cultivation practices in upland field is available. Soil GHG emissions during the growing season were investigated in the field of three decades rotation and tillage treatments which were consisted of plow, chiesl tillage and no tillage in west central Indiana, USA in 2006. Seasonal cumulative $CO_2$ emissions were not different among treatments. $CH_4$ emission increased a little in plow tillage during early soybean growing season. Most of $N_2O$ emission occurred during early corn growing season after N-fertilizer application from mid June to mid July, and was significantly affected by tillage practices in which seasonal cumulative $N_2O$ emission was significantly higher under chisel tillage. $N_2O$ emission under no-tillage was lower about 64% and 39% than that under chisel tillage and plow tillage, respectively. No-tillage practice with rotation of corn and soybean seems to be promising in point of less GHG emission and less labor for cultivation without grain yield reduction.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of organic farmland soil and nutrient management on soil properties depending on organic (animal manure compost and green manure [hairy vetch]) and chemical fertilization, tillage and no-tillage, and crop rotation (corn-wheat, corn-.hairy vetch). It was found that the application of organic matter such as animal manure compost and hairy vetch, increased the soil organic matter content, the soil microbial density and microbial biomass C content as compared with the chemical fertilizer treatment. It was also confirmed that the functional diversity of soil microbial community was increased. As a result of the comparison with the crop rotation and single cropping, the soil chemistry showed no significant difference between the treatments, but the corn-wheat and corn-hairy vetch rotation treatments tended to have higher microbial biomass C content and shannon's diversity index than the single cropping. Soil chemical properties of tillage and no-tillage treatments showed no significant difference between treatments. There was no statistically significant difference in substrate utilization of soil microbial community between tillage and no-tillage treatment. Correlation analysis between soil chemical properties and soil microbial activity revealed that soil organic matter content and exchangeable potassium content were positively correlated, with statistical significance, with substrate utilization, and substrate richness. To conclude, organic fertilization had positive effects on the short-term improvement of soil chemical properties and diversity of microbial communities.
