A FEM-based analytical approach was used to evaluate the multiaxial high cycle fatigue damage of an automotive sub-frame. Elastic Multi Body Simulation (MBS) has been applied in order to determine the multiaxial load histories. The stresses due to these loads have been given by FE computation. These results have been used as the input for the multiaxial fatigue analysis. For the assessment of multiaxial high cycle fatigue damage, the signed von Mises, the signed Tresca, the absolute maximum principal stress and critical plane methods have been employed. In addition, the biaxiality ratio, a$\sub$e/, the absolute maximum principal stress, $\sigma$$\sub$p/ and the angle, $\phi$$\sub$P/, between $\sigma$$\sub$1/ and the local x-axis, have been calculated to evaluate the stress state at each node.
Biaxial low cycle fatigue test was carried out to predict fatigue life under combined axial-torsional-loading condition which is that of in-phase and out-of-phase for CF8M cast stainless steels. Fatemi-Socie(FS) parameter which is based on critical plane approach is not only one of methods but also the best method that can predict fatigue life under biaxial loading condition. But the result showed that, biaxial fatigue life prediction by using FS parameter with several different parameters for the CF8M cast stainless steels is not conservative but best results. So in this present research, we proposed new fatigue life prediction parameter considering effective shear stress instead of FS parameter which considers the maximum normal stress acting on maximum shear strain and its effectiveness was verified.
The determination of compressive zone at the critical section of concrete walls under in-plane flexure is important in both assessing the ductility and designing the seismic retrofit. Recognizing this, the once-predominated code approach to determine the compressive zone was advanced by considering concrete rectangular stress block parameters varying with the extreme fiber strain in compression. It is shown that the major factors influencing the magnitude of compressive zone are axial load ratio, concrete strength, longitudinal steel ratio, yield strength and the level of strain at extreme compression fiber of wall sections. The present paper closes with the discussion for the research agenda requiring further study to investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete walls.
The thermal buckling temperature values of the graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite shell structure is explored using higher-order mid-plane kinematics and multiscale constituent modeling under two different thermal fields. The critical values of buckling temperature including the effect of in-plane thermal loading are computed numerically by minimizing the final energy expression through a linear isoparametric finite element technique. The governing equation of the multiscale nanocomposite is derived via the variational principle including the geometrical distortion through Green-Lagrange strain. Additionally, the model includes different grading patterns of nanotube through the panel thickness to improve the structural strength. The reliability and accuracy of the developed finite element model are varified by comparison and convergence studies. Finally, the applicability of present developed model was highlight by enlighten several numerical examples for various type shell geometries and design parameters.
The optimal plastic design of framed structures has been treated as the minimum weight design while satisfying the limit equilibrium condition that the structure may not fail in any of the all possible collapse modes before the specified design ultimate load is reached. Conventional optimum frame designs assume that a continuous spectrum of member size is available. In fact, the vailable sections merely consist of a finite range of discrete member sizes. Optimum frame design using discrete sections has been performed by adopting the plastic collapse theory and using the Complex Method of Box. This study has presented an iterative approach to the optimal plastic design of plane structures that involves the performance of a series of minimum weight design where the limit equilibrium equation pertaining to the critical collapse mode is added to the constraint set for the next design. The critical collapse mode is found by the collapse load analysis that is formulated as a linear programming problem. This area of research is currently being studied. This study would be applied and extended to design the larger and more complex framed structures.
In this work, thermo-elastic stability behavior of laminated cross-ply elliptical cylindrical shells subjected to uniform temperature rise is studied employing the finite element approach based on higher-order theory that accounts for the transverse shear and transverse normal deformations, and nonlinear in-plane displacement approximations through the thickness with slope discontinuity at the layer interfaces. The combined influence of higher-order shear deformation, shell geometry and non-circularity on the prebuckling thermal stress distribution and critical temperature parameter of laminated elliptical cylindrical shells is examined.
Modern systems development becomes more and more complicated due to the need on the ever-increasing capability of the systems. In addition to the complexity issue, safety concern is also increasing since the malfunctions of the systems under development may result in the accidents in both the test and evaluation phase and the operation phase. Those accidents can cause disastrous damages if explosiveness gets involved therein such as in weapon systems development. The subject of this paper is on how to incorporate safety requirements in the design of safety-critical systems. As an approach, a useful system structure using the method of design structure matrix (DSM) is studied while reflecting the need on systems safety. Specifically, the effects of system components failure are analyzed and numerically modeled first. Also, the system components are identified and their interfaces are represented using a component DSM. Combining the results of the failure analysis and the component DSM leads to a modified DSM. By rearranging the resultant DSM, a modular structure is derived with safety requirements incorporated. As a case study, application of the approach is also discussed in the development of a military UAV plane.
The aim of this work is to provide some insights into the elasto-plastic behaviour of plate girder web square and rectangular panels with centred and eccentric holes under both compression and in-plane bending moment. The numerical study was validated comparing the numerical results obtained for one simple steel plate configuration with the corresponding experimental results, obtained at the University of Padova, observing the influence of the initial out-of-plane imperfections on the force vs. displacement relationship and ultimate strength. Once validated the numerical approach, the effect of bending moment on the stability of the plate is studied and some differences with respect to the uniform compression load case are shown. The influence of dimension and position of the hole, the plate aspect ratio and the steel grade on elasto-plastic behaviour is observed. Some indications regarding the critical slenderness (at which transition from elastic to plastic collapse occurs) are given for square and rectangular plates with symmetric and eccentric holes having small, medium and large diameter.
This study evaluates the behavior and strength of an anchorage zone of the prestressed concrete box girder bridge on the Kyungboo highway railroad using the 2D SUB-3D STM approach and a linear elastic finite element analysis. The 2D SUB-3D STM approach utilizes several two-dimensional sub strut-tie models that represent the compressive and tensile stress flows of each projected plane of the three-dimensional structural concrete in the selection of a three dimensional strut-tie model, evaluation of the effective strengths of the concrete struts, and verification of the geometric compatibility condition and bearing capacity of the critical nodal zones in the selected three-dimensional strut-tie model. The finite element analysis uses an 8-node brick element and the longitudinal prestressing force is considered as the equivalent nodal force. Analysis results show that the 2D SUB-3D STM approach and linear elastic finite element method can be effectively applied to the analysis and design of three-dimensional structural concrete including a prestressed concrete box girder anchorage zone.
Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are widely employed in sensors, biomedical devices, optic sectors, and micro-accelerometers. New reinforcement materials such as carbon nanotubes as well as graphene platelets provide stiffer structures with controllable mechanical specifications by changing the graphene platelet features. This paper deals with buckling analyses of functionally graded graphene platelets micro plates with two piezoelectric layers subjected to external applied voltage. Governing equations are based on Kirchhoff plate theory assumptions beside the modified couple stress theory to incorporate the micro scale influences. A uniform temperature change and external electric field are regarded along the micro plate thickness. Moreover, an external in-plane mechanical load is uniformly distributed along the micro plate edges. The Hamilton's principle is employed to extract the governing equations. The material properties of each composite layer reinforced with graphene platelets of the considered micro plate are evaluated by the Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model. The governing equations are solved by the Navier's approach for the case of simply-supported boundary condition. The effects of the external applied voltage, the material length scale parameter, the thickness of the piezoelectric layers, the side, the length and the weight fraction of the graphene platelets as well as the graphene platelets distribution pattern on the critical buckling temperature change and on the critical buckling in-plane load are investigated. The outcomes illustrate the reduction of the thermal buckling strength independent of the graphene platelets distribution pattern while meanwhile the mechanical buckling strength is promoted. Furthermore, a negative voltage, -50 Volt, strengthens the micro plate stability against the thermal buckling occurrence about 9% while a positive voltage, 50 Volt, decreases the critical buckling load about 9% independent of the graphene platelet distribution pattern.
