By examining the experimental results, the critical mean velocity which initiates the movement of riprap is increased with the riprap size in mean diameter, the mean diameter over water depth (d/h), Froude number (Fr), and turbulent shear velocity over critical mean velocity (u*/${\nu}$) which have great correlations among them so these parameters are adopted governing hydraulic stability for riprap. The hydraulic stability equation for riprap is developed by regression analysis. The developed equation is expanded from 0.36~0.73 m/s of experimental range to 0~5.0 m/s for the application in engineering discipline. So many useful relations among those parameters including critical mean velocity are derived by expanding to high Reynolds regions. Mean diameter calculation results by expanding to high Reynolds regions coincide with the calculations of ASCE and USBR at the range of 0~3.0 m/s and the calculation result of ASCE at the range of 3.0~5.0 m/s. The results by developed formulae coincide well with the formulae of ASCE in general and also the results by recently developed existing formulae of hydraulic stability for riprap. Thus, the developed equation has the high applicability in engineering discipline to evaluate the hydraulic stability for riprap.
In Geum River of Korea, three multi-purpose weirs were built at the downstream of Daecheong Reservoir during the Four Major River Restoration Project (FMRRP). The weirs have altered the hydraulic characteristics of the river, and consequently transformed the large areas of flowing ecosystem to deep and wide stagnant environment. In every summer, a thermal stratification occurred near the Baekje Weir having mean depth of 4.0 m, and the surface algal blooms dominated by buoyant cyanobacteria have been frequently formed after the FMRRP. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between flow velocity and thermal stability of the waterbody using a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model (EFDC+) after calibration against the thermistor chain data obtained in 2014. A new Sigma-Zed vertical grid system of EFDC+ that minimize the pressure gradient errors was used to better simulate the thermodynamics of the waterbody. The model reasonably simulated the vertical profiles of the observed water temperatures. The vertical mean flow velocity and the Richardson Number (Ri) that represents the stability of waterbody were estimated for various management water levels and flow rates scenarios. The results indicated that the thermal stability of the waterbody is mostly high ($Ri{\gg}0.25$) enough to establish stratification, and largely depend on the flow velocity. The critical flow velocity that can avoid a persistent thermal stratification was found to be approximately 0.1 m/s.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the volume fraction of water and injection pressure on the spray characteristics of water/oil emulsified fuel injected from the pressure swirl atomizer. The mixture of light oil and water by using impeller mixer was performed. The spray characteristics such as SMD and velocity were measured using PDPA. The injection pressures were 7.5, 100, 200 and $300kgt/cm^2$ and volume fractions of water in emulsified fuel were 0, 10, 20 and 30%, respectively. The measurement sections were at 30, 60 and 90mm from injection nozzle tip. SMD and velocity of emulsified fuel were larger gradually by increasing the volume fraction of water in emulsified fuel. The spray angle was decreased and axial velocity was increased with increase in water content. It was found that the relative SMD ratio was increased more greatly than the relative axial velocity ratio in super critical pressure. The relative SMD ratio was increased and the relative axial velocity ratio was decreased with increase injection pressure at spray downstream.

To evaluate the formulae for the stability of riprap, the formulae of Isbash, California division of highway, Netherlands, ASCE, Pilarczk, and Maynord are comparatively analysed with the experimental results. The critical velocity which initiates the motion of riprap is increased with the weight and the size in diameter and the riprap size with water depth, Froude number, shear velocity with mean velocity, Shields parameter have great correlation with them. The results by 6 formulae are overestimated in riprap size in diameter and the result by Maynord formula proposed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates rather correct. The results by Isbash, Netherlands, and Pilarczk are overestimated in riprap weight but the result by California division of highway formula coincides with experimental result. In the experimental results of model riprap artificially made by gypsum with light weight density, the critical velocity is increased with shape factors. The critical velocity appears greater in regular arrangement of model riprap than in random arrangement of it. Therefore the shape factor and the degree of interlocking are an important parameters in riprap stability.
The effect of mean angle of wind attack on the flutter critical wind speed of two generic bridge deck cross-sections, viz, one closed box type streamlined section (deck-1) and closed box trapezoidal bluff type section with extended flanges/overhangs (deck-2) type of section have been studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based forced vibration simulation method. Owing to the importance of the effect of the amplitude of forcing oscillation on the flutter onset, its effect on the flutter derivatives and flutter onset have been studied, especially at non-zero mean angles of wind attack. The flutter derivatives obtained have been used to evaluate flutter critical wind speeds and flutter index of the deck sections at non-zero mean angles of wind attack studied and the same have been validated with those based on experimental results reported in literature. The value of amplitude of forcing oscillation in torsional degree of freedom for CFD based simulations is suggested to be in the range of 0.5° to 2°, especially for bluff bridge deck sections. Early onset of flutter from numerical simulations, thereby conservative estimate of occurrence of instability has been observed from numerical simulations in case of bluff bridge deck section. The study aids in gaining confidence and the extent of applicability of CFD during early stages of bridge design, especially towards carrying out studies on mean incident wind effects.
The distribution of gravel-bed materials in mountainous river is formed by the process of deposition and transportation of sediment responding to stream power of the latest flood that is over the certain scale. The particle size of bed material was surveyed in the longitudinal points of river and detail points of a specific meandering section and used to estimate the critical velocity and stream power. Yang's critical unit stream power and Bagnold's critical stream power for gravel-bed materials increased with the distance from downstream to upstream. Dimensionless shear stress based on the designed flood discharge in Shields diagram was evaluated that the gravel-bed materials in most survey points may be transported as form of bedload. The mean diameter in the meandering section was the biggest size in first water impingement point of inflow water from upstream and the second big size in second water impingement point by reflection flow. The mean diameters were relatively the small sizes in points right after water impingement. The range of mean critical velocity was 0.77~2.60 m/s and critical unit stream power was big greatly in first water impingement point. The distribution of critical stream power, range of 7~171 $W/m^2$, was shown that variation in longitudinal section was more obvious than that of cross section and estimated that critical stream power may be affected greatly in first and second water impingement point.

Turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate was disturbed by installing an elliptic cylinder with an axis ratio of AR=2. For comparison, the same experiment was carried out for a circular cylinder having the same vertical height. The surface pressure and the heat transfer coefficient on the flat plate were measured with varying the gap distance between the elliptic cylinder and the flat plate. The mean velocity and the turbulent intensity profile of the streamwise velocity component were measured using a hot-wire anemometry. As a result, the flow structure and the local heat transfer rate were modified by the interaction between the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer as a function of the critical gap ratio where the regular vortices start to shed. For the elliptic cylinder, the critical gap ratio is increased and the surface pressure on the flat plate is recovered rapidly at downstream location, compared with the equivalent circular cylinder. The maximum heat transfer rate occurs at the gap ratio of G/B = 0.5, where the flow interaction between the lower shear layer of the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer is strong.

Wind tunnel tests of a 1/2200-scale mountainous terrain model have been carried out to investigate local wind characteristics at a bridge location in southeast Tibet, China. Flows at five key locations on the bridge at deck level were measured for 26 directions. It was observed that wind characteristics (including mean wind velocity and overall turbulence intensity) vary significantly depending on the approaching wind direction and measurement position. The wind inclination angle measured in the study fluctuated between $-18^{\circ}$ and $+16^{\circ}$ and the ratio of mean wind velocity to reference wind velocity was small when the wind inclination angles were large, especially for positive wind inclination angles. The design standard wind speed and the minimum critical wind speed for flutter rely on the wind inclination angle and should be determined from the results of such tests. The variation of wind speed with wind inclination angles should be of the asymmetry step type. The turbulence characteristics of the wind were found to be similar to real atmospheric flows.

This paper investigates the noise radiated by a cascade of flat-plate airfoils interacting with homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. At frequencies above the critical frequency, all wavenumber components of turbulence excite propagating cascade modes, and cascade effects are shown to be relatively weak. In this frequency range, acoustic power was shown to be approximately proportional to the number of blades. Based on this finding at high frequencies, an approximate expression is derived for the power spectrum that is valid above the critical frequency and which is in excellent agreement with the exact expression for the broadband power spectrum. The approximate expression shows explicitly that the acoustic Power above the critical frequency is proportional to the blade number, independent of the solidity, and varies with frequency as ${\phi}_{ww}(\omega/W$), where ${\phi}_{ww}$ is the wavenumber spectrum of the turbulence velocity and W is mean-flow speed. The formulation is used to perform a parametric study on the effects on the power spectrum of the blade number stagger angle, gap-chord ratio and Mach number. The theory is also shown to provide a close fit to the measured spectrum of rotor-stator interaction when the mean square turbulence velocity and length-scale are chosen appropriately.

The present study aims to investigate the interaction of a wire-type turbulence stimulator and the laminar boundary layer on a flat plate by flow field measurement. For the towing tank tests, a one-dimensional Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) attached on a two-axis traverse was used to measure the streamwise velocity component of the boundary layer flow in zero pressure gradient, disturbed by a turbulence stimulator. The wire diameter was 0.5 and 1.0 mm according to the recommended procedures and guidelines suggested by the International Towing Tank Conference. Turbulence development by the stimulator was identified by the skin friction coefficient, mean and Root Mean Square (RMS) of the streamwise velocity. The laminar boundary layer with the absence of the wire-type stimulator was similar to the Blasius solution and previous experimental results. By the stimulator, the mean and RMS of the streamwise velocity were increased near the wall, showing typical features of the fully developed turbulent boundary layer. The critical Reynolds number was reduced from 2.7×105 to 1.0×105 by the disturbances caused by the wire. As the wire diameter and the roughness Reynolds number (Rek) increased, the disturbances by the stimulator increased RMS of the streamwise velocity than turbulent boundary layer.
