In this study, we propose a distance metric learning approach called discriminant metric learning (DML) for face verification, which addresses a binary-class problem for classifying whether or not two input images are of the same subject. The critical issue for solving this problem is determining the method to be used for measuring the distance between two images. Among various methods, the large margin nearest neighbor (LMNN) method is a state-of-the-art algorithm. However, to compensate the LMNN's entangled data distribution due to high levels of appearance variations in unconstrained environments, DML's goal is to penalize violations of the negative pair distance relationship, i.e., the images with different labels, while being integrated with LMNN to model the distance relation between positive pairs, i.e., the images with the same label. The likelihoods of the input images, estimated using DML and LMNN metrics, are then weighted and combined for further analysis. Additionally, rather than using the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) classification mechanism, we propose a verification mechanism that measures the correlation of the class label distribution of neighbors to reduce the false negative rate of positive pairs. From the experimental results, we see that DML can modify the relation of negative pairs in the original LMNN space and compensate for LMNN's performance on faces with large variances, such as pose and expression.

In this study, a state of art review of existing residual stress analysis techniques and representative solutions is presented in order to develope the residual stress analysis procedure for fitness-for-service (FFS) assessment of welded structure. Critical issues associated with existing residual stress solutions and their treatments in performing FFS are discussed. It should be recognized that detailed residual stress evolution is an extremely complicated phenomenon that typically involves material-specific ther-momechanical/metallurgical response, welding process physics, and structural interactions within a component being welded. As a result, computational procedures can vary significantly from highly complicated numerical techniques intended only to elucidate a small part of the process physics to cost-effective procedures that are deemed adequate for capturing some of the important features in a final residual stress distribution. Residual stress analysis procedure for FFS purposes belongs to the latter category. With this in mind, both residual stress analysis techniques and their adequacy for FFS are assessed based on both literature data and analyses performed in this investigation.
The purpose of this paper, followed by 'Nature$\cdot$Human, and Golden Section I ', is to study aesthetic consciousness, mentality model and body proportion of human, and the golden section applied to architecture and hand axe of stone age. In particular, handaxes of one million years ago have shown that they had critical competency to the basis of art and mathematics in the future. Furthermore, without pen, paper and ruler, the existence of mentality model made fundamental conversion of mathematics possible. Different sizes of handaxes were made by maintaining the equal golden section. This was the first example in relation to the principle mentioned in 'Stoicheia' by Euclid which was published hundred thousands of years later.
Early generations of products had little to no inherent capability to test themselves. The technologies involved often required only visual inspection and limited probing to troubleshoot the system once it was turned over to maintenance personnel. However, as the complexity of military and commercial systems grew, symptoms of failure became less noticeable to the operator. Therefore, the procedure to access, inspect, repair and replace a component became complicated, the requirements for personnel skill and testing equipment increased. and it took too long of a time to maintain a system. Meanwhile, the need for availability became more mission-critical and maintenance become very expensive. The obvious solution was to design in-system circuits or devices to self-test the primary system, the Built-In-Test(BIT) was born. This approach has continued right on up through present systems and is an integral part of systems now being designed. The object of this paper is to present a state-of-the-art research for filtering out the BIT diagnosis mistakes using Bayesian analysis and develop the algorithm for Redundant systems with BIT to improve BIT diagnosis.

Current progress in the development of semiconductor technology in applications involving high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) and power devices is hindered by the lack of adequate ways todissipate heat generated during device operation. Concurrently, electronic devices that use gallium nitride (GaN) substrates do not perform well, because of the poor heat dissipation of the substrate. Suggested alternatives for overcoming these limitations include integration of high thermal conductivity material like diamond near the active device areas. This study will address a critical development in the art of GaN on diamond (GOD) structure by designing for ideal heat dissipation, in order to create apathway with the least thermal resistance and to improve the overall ease of integrating diamond heat spreaders into future electronic devices. This research has been carried out by means of heat transfer simulation, which has been successfully demonstrated by a finite-element method.
This study has been started by the trendy analysis of parody in post-modern dance. Creative parody is not an imitative work but provides new originality of a work of art and serves as the criticism. Since the 1960s the trend and characteristics of using parody in post-modern dance can be classified into five concepts which are the cultural diversity, the autonomous thinking ability, the aesthetic perception, the use of the mass media and the cultural relations of the critical process. In conclusion, the parody elements in post-modern dance are due to the cultural diversity, and the experimental values which are divided into the beauty of content and mode has been acted as the important factors to achieve the parody elements to new dimension.
Recent projects of Japanese architect, Ito Toyo have been evolved into innovative and experimental stages that are unique and different from other contemporary architects. Since Ito established his own office in 1971, there were several critical changes and developments in terms of architectural philosophy as well as design methods. Particularly, after Sendai Mediatheque, Ito has tended to focus on creating three-dimensional organic body in which architectural form, space, structure, facilities, images are merged all together. With this new type of three-dimensional structure, Ito aims to generate a new notion of architecture as 'living organism'. This paper tried to analyze Ito's new concept of architecture, design process of three-dimensional organic body and its ultimate characteristics and meanings. For the analysis, three projects were selected: Taichung Metropolitan Opera House(2005), Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive(2007), The New Deichman Library in Oslo(2008). These projects clearly represent several types of three-dimensional organic body. After the comparative studies, it is found that, in Ito's design process and method, there are unique characters: ambivalent relationship between plan and three-dimensional form, aiming new/hyper reality through complicated collaboration of analogue and digital design tools, and contradictory relationship with surrounding urban context. Although there are some limitations and restrictions, ever-evolving Ito's design concept and methods are very much valid and meaningful in contemporary spatial design in various perspectives.
This study was jointly conducted by the department of nursing science in a college of natural sciences and the furniture design department in the art and physical education to research the critical factors for the furniture development for the Elderly in consideration of the surging number of senior citizens not only in Korea but also globally. On the basis of the Elderly's physical and mental characteristics investigated by the department of nursing science, the furniture design guideline for the Elderly was presented. The following points should be considered at designing the furniture for the Elderly. First, multiple functions like chair with removable toilet bowl and part lighting in bed are advantageous. Second, the dimension of furniture such as chair, bed and sofa should be ergonomically thought in terms of structure for the Elderly's convenience. Third, the bright and vivid color of furniture should be chosen from the aspect of the design, while the different kinds of blue should be avoided. Small patterns and high glossy are not recommendable, but various kinds of feelings in different shapes are suggested. Forth, the material should contribute to the fracture prevention and for that sponge, fabric and leather smoothing the surface of furniture are recommendable as the finishing treatment in a wide variety of colors.

Energy efficiency is critical for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) since sensor nodes usually have very limited energy supply from battery. Sleep scheduling and nodes cooperation are two of the most efficient methods to achieve energy conservation in WSNs. In this paper, we propose an adaptive energy optimization approach for target tracking applications, called Energy-Efficient Node Coordination (EENC), which is based on the grid structure. EENC provides an unambiguous calculation and analysis for optimal the nodes cooperation theoretically. In EENC, the sleep schedule of sensor nodes is locally synchronized and globally unsynchronized. Locally in each grid, the sleep schedule of all nodes is synchronized by the grid head, while globally the sleep schedule of each grid is independent and is determined by the proposed scheme. For dynamic sleep scheduling in tracking state we propose a multi-level coordination algorithm to find an optimal nodes cooperation of the network to maximize the energy conservation while preserving the tracking performance. Experimental results show that EENC can achieve energy saving of at least 38.2% compared to state-of-the-art approaches.
This paper describes an experience on the equipment qualification of CRCS(control rod control system) that has been developed for nuclear power plants. A very high level criteria should be satisfied for the equipment to be used for nuclear power plants. We have developed a CRCS that is aimed to be applied to commercial plants. This system adopts a duplex system structure that is based on the state-of-the-art digital technology so that it has higher reliability than the existing systems. The CRCS has been tested at a licensed testing organization and finally qualified. In this paper, the procedures and some trial-and-errors we have been through in the qualification process are explained. It is expected that our experience will be a helpful tips to the industry that are developing various systems for safety-critical plants.
