Skid mark and coefficient of friction are usually utilized to calculate the velocity and behavior of vehicles. For a critical case such as traffic accident reconstruction, however, the initial velocity of the car should be calculated precisely. In this study, in order to estimate the speed at the brake onset, rapid braking tests were executed on the proving ground. We compared with a skid length and wheel locking time of an expert driver and a general person. We verified that the skid mark of expert driver occurs longer than general person's. A new method is proposed to determine the speed of a vehicle at the brake onset of maximum braking, which could be applied to a reconstruction of vehicle with Non-ABS.
The protection of frontal seat passengers in both driver and front seated occupant has been more focused from the auto industries as well as regulatory bodies more than 40 years. Recently, their interests have been extended to rear seat occupants especially children and female occupants. However, the current available safety devices for the rear seat occupants are seat belt only. According to the previous researchers, the injury level of the rear seat passengers tend to be higher than the injury level of the frontal seat passengers. In this study, the optimal location of seat belts anchorages to enhance rear passengers crashworthiness are studied. FEM models are designed in accordance with regulation of KMVSS102, UN R44, UN R16, and UN R14. and three point belts are fitted on the HybridIII 5th percentile dummy and HybridIII 50th percentile dummy. The combined injury value used HIC15, Nij, Chest deflection, Femur force are used to evaluate rear seat belt anchorage optimal locations.
As the regulation and assessment program for safety of passengers become stringent, automakers are required to develop lighter and safer vehicles. In order to fulfill both requirements which conflict with each other, automobile and steel companies have proposed the application of AHSS(Advance High Strength Steel) such as DP, TRIP and martensite steel. ULSAB-AVC model is one of the most remarkable reactions to offer solutions with the use of steel for the challenge to improve simultaneously the fuel efficiency, passenger safety, vehicle performance and affordability. This paper is concerned with the crash analysis of ULSAB-AVC model according to the US-SINCAP in order to compare the effectiveness between the model with AHSS and that with conventional steels. The crashworthiness is investigated by comparing the deformed shape of the cabin room, the energy absorption characteristics and the intrusion velocity of a car.
Appropriate friction model usage is important for impact analysis because the relative motions between parts that are in contact for very short durations can vary greatly depending on the friction model. Vehicle seat components that have significant effects on impact analysis are also considered. This paper presents an experimental investigation of various material contact pairs to obtain the friction parameters of the Benson exponential friction model for impact simulation. The Coulomb friction model has limitations for impact analysis because of singularity at zero velocity. Metal/nonmetal materials are prepared, and friction tests are conducted for various sliding speeds, loads, and lubrication conditions. The obtained data are used in the friction model to implement finite element analysis. The parameters of the friction model are obtained by the curve-fitting method. The experimental results show that the friction coefficient with metal/nonmetal contact pairs is stable regardless of the working conditions. The friction model used in this study can also be applied for finite element analysis of the crash conditions, where the friction changes abruptly at the contact interface; the obtained friction parameters are also expected to be more accurate with more precise tests under different working conditions. These results can help improve the accuracy of the finite element analysis.
With the recent issuance of a dynamic side impact test regulation in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard in the United States of America, many aspects of occupant protection in side impact crashes have been under investigation. Many investigations of real world accidents, crash test results and simulation studies have established that in side impact crashes of passenger cars, thoracic and pelvic injuries of occupant are, large part, caused by occupants' impact against the interior side of the vehicle, primarily the door. This paper is concerned with the development of a lumped mass computer model, which simulates the interaction of a struck car door and an adjacent seated occupant in side impacr, based CTP code which has been successfully used in vehicle and occupant simulation. New model developments include elimination of influence of vehicle side structure stiffness in the occupant injury responses. The model was used to investigated the effect of various door padding characteristics on occupant responses to improve vehicle safety performance. The evaluation of different crush properties of door padding have also focused to understand of behavior of impacted occupant. Results from simulations, The effects of both material coefficients $C_{f}$ and p were illustrated in terms of occupant injury criteria TTI and pelvis.
The plastics are widely utilized in the inside of vehicles. The dynamic tensile characteristics of auto-body plastics are important in a prediction of deformation mode of the plastic component which undergoes the high speed deformation during car crash. This paper is concerned with the dynamic tensile characteristics of the auto-body plastics at intermediate strain rates. Quasi-static tensile tests were carried out at the strain rate ranged from 0.001/sec to 0.01/sec using the static tensile machine(Instron 5583). Dynamic tensile tests were carried out at the strain rate ranged from 0.1/sec to 100/sec using the high speed material testing machine developed. Conventional extensometry method is no longer available for plastics, since the deformation of plastic is accompanied with localized deformation. In this paper, quasi-static and dynamic tensile tests were performed using ASTM IV standard specimens with grids and images from a high speed camera were analyzed for strain measurement. True stress-strain relations and the actual strain rates at each deformation step were obtained by processing load data and deformation images, assuming the plastics to deform uniformly in each grid.
The automotive manufactures increase their use of lightweight materials to improve fuel economy and energy usage has a significant influence on the choice of developing materials. To meet this requirements manufacturers are replacing individual body parts with lightweight metals, for these the process treating and painting surfaces is changing. The pre-coated steels are newly developed to avoid the conventional complex and non-environmental painting process in the body-in-white car manufacturing. The development of new joining techniques is critically needed for pre-coated steel sheets, which are electrically non-conductive materials. In the present study, dissimilar combination of pre-coated steel and galvanized steel sheets were joined by the self-piercing rivet, adhesive bonding and hybrid joining techniques. The tensile shear test and free falling high speed crash test were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of the joints. The highest tensile peak load with large deformation was observed for the hybrid joining process which has attained 48% higher than the self-piercing rivet. Moreover, the hybrid and adhesive joints were observed better strain energy compared to self-piercing rivet. The fractography analyses were revealed that the mixed mode of cohesive and interfacial fracture for both the hybrid and adhesive bonding joints.
