Hart Crane′s Aberrant English

  • When Hart Crane′s poem cycle The Bridge was published in 1930, a group of influential reviewers accused Crane of immaturity, sentimentality, and lack of focus. They condemned crane′s wayward, fuzzy mysticism as backwards-looking and self-defeating. Even sympathetic critics, such as Harold Bloom, have consistently portrayed Crane′s poetry as the pyrotechnic final fizzle of late romanticism. These persistent, public reservations, however, have not prevented an impressive proliferation in secondary literature concerning Crane since the late 1960s. His promiscuity, alcoholism, erratic behavior, relative poverty, tragic death, and total commitment to art have since earned him the labels of New World Rimbaud and proto-Beat. His colorful career thus explains in part his retrospective fame. Nevertheless, living hard and dying young do not guarantee artistic immortality. This article poses questions as to why Crane has mattered so much to subsequent generations of U.S. readers and what these readers find so compelling in his poetry. The answer, I would argue, lies in Crane′s idiosyncratic use of language. Far from striving for transparency, he writes in an inimitably obstructive, artificial manner. There is something seductive and absurd in his wild use of words here, I would further argue, we discover the reason behind both Crane′s enduring appeal and his supposed inadequacy as a writer. Crane did "torture" syntax, semantics, and conventional associations, not because he saw his unusual language as an eccentric mannerism but because he saw it as a tool in the service of constructing a "myth of America" and reintegrating the human and divine. Understanding thy he considered this to be the case clarifies Crane′s achievement and illuminates why his work still seems so relevant today.

대형 해상크레인의 구조 기본 설계 (A Basic Structural Design for large Floating Crane)

  • This paper describes basic structural design for the large floating crane barge of fixed undulation type. Structural analysis is performed to divide two parts because crane barge is composed two parts, crane part of jib boom back stay and back tower and barge part to support crane part. The structural strength for jib boom structure members are in compliance with JIS B 8821 and scantling of all barge structural members are in compliance with the requirement of KR (Korean Register of Shipping) Steel Barges and Rules for Classification of Steel Ships. For the structural analysis of large floating crane, MSC/NASTRAN & MSC/PATRAN software is used.

산업현장의 천장크레인 조작장치 사용 현황과 인간공학적 문제점 (Overhead Crane Controllers and Ergonomic Problems in Industrial Field)

  • Overhead cranes are the most widely used and have been identified as one of the main causes of fatal accidents. Although structural, mechanical and electrical safety standards for overhead cranes have been established to some extent, ergonomic standards related to crane controllers are rarely established. As a result, many crane accidents are reported to be caused by operator's error. To investigate the actual use of crane controllers in the industrial field, we surveyed 82 overhead cranes in 15 workplace and interviewed workers operating them. This study has presented the ergonomic problems related to the crane controllers in the field. As a result of investigation, it was found that the direction control signs, the sign language, and the button layout on the pendant switches and remote controllers are not standardized, which can cause a human error. To reduce human errors in overhead crane operation, ergonomic standards for controllers should be reflected on the government legislation or standards.

한강하구에 도래하는 재두루미(Grus vipio) 서식지이용과 토지피복도 상관관계 연구 (Comparison of White-naped Crane Habitat Use Pattern with Land-coverage Map in the Han-River Estuary and DMZ)

  • For the Han-river estuary and DMZ where white-naped crane (Grus vipio; endangered migratory bird) stopover or spend winter, the habitat composition and the habitat use pattern of white-naped crane were analyzed with the position data obtained by the satellite tracking method. By the use of geographic information system (GIS), the percent composition of seven habitat categories of white naped-crane data points (n=228) was analyzed. The chi-square test showed that the white-naped crane habitat use pattern was significantly different (p<0.05) from that of random points (n=228). It means that white-naped crane select and use particular habitat area in the Han-river estuary and DMZ.

  • The hydraulic excavators are mainly applied for excavating, public works, quarrying, etc. In some of the construction site, however, they are used for crane works of relatively light materials, although the crane works by the hydraulic excavators are forbidden by law due to the safety reasons. The major construction equipment companies in forward countries have been developing the new systems, e.g. crane works by the hydraulic excavators, and they are working in the construction site. Therefore, the new system of crane works by the hydraulic excavators should be developed for the domestic construction site in order to prevent the accident. In this paper, the fundamental study and experiment are accomplished for the crane system application on the hydraulic excavators.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of wind load on the structural stability of a container crane according to the increase of the lifting capacity using wind tunnel test and provided a container crane designer with data which can be used in a wind resistance design of a container crane assuming that a wind load at 75m/s wind velocity is applied on a container crane. Data acquisition conditions for this experiment were established in accordance with the similarity. The scale of a container crane dimension, wind velocity and time were chosen as 1/200, 1/13.3 and 1/15. And this experiment was implemented in an Eiffel type atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel with $11.52m^{2}$ cross-section area. Each directional drag and overturning moment coefficients were investigated.

크레인 구동부의 Lateral Motion에 관한 연구 (The Study on Lateral Motion of Crane Driving Mechanism)

  • This paper studied on the lateral motion of the gantry crane which is used for the automated container terminal. Though several problems are occurred in driving of gantry crane, they are solved by the motion by the operator. But, if the gantry crane is unmanned, it is automatically controlled without any human operation. Especially, the collision between wheel-flange and rail is a very critical problem in driving of unmanned gantry crane. To bring a solution to these problems, the lateral and yaw dynamic equations of the driving mechanism of gantry crane are derived. And this study used PD(Proportional-Derivative) Controller to control the lateral displacement and the yaw angle. The simulation result of the driving mechanism using the Runge-Kutta method is presented in this paper.

러핑각도에 따른 선박용 지브크레인의 구조 안정성 평가 (Evaluation of Structural Stability of JIB Crane for a Feed Vessel According to the Luffing Angle)

  • It expects demand of ships which equipped with JIB crane growth to continue. However, demand of JIB crane is increased, domestic shipment company imitated the design of Europe and Japan. And we need to develop the functional system of the JIB crane and modernize it. We need to find the optimum luffing angle for saving energy when JIB crane works. This study analyzed buckling load of JIB and reaction force of support point and stress of JIB according to the luffing angle through finite element analysis when JIB crane loads 40 ton weight. And this study considered the safety factor 1.8 of material. Every design condition was KS A1627 standard. This study used ANSYS 10.0.

  • A provision crane is generally installed on the upper deck to the rear of the accommodation of the ship in order to load and unload engine part or something heavy. There are two types of provision cranes: one is jib-type and the other is monorail-type. So the natural frequency of the jib-type crane equipment is low, therefore, there are some possibility of resonance between crane structure and the main excitation sources of the ship in normal operating range. This study describe a vibration reduction technique for provision crane by applying a proper countermeasure through finite element analysis and modal test. In order to find out weak point in design of provision crane, a sensitive analysis has been performed.

  • This paper studied on the yaw motion of the gantry crane which is used for the automated container terminal. Though several problems are occurred in driving of gantry crane, they are solved by the motion by the operator. But if the gantry crane is unmanned, it is automatically controlled without any human operation. There are two types, cone and flat typo in driving wheel shape. In cone type, lateral vibration and yaw motion of crane are issued. To bring a solution to these problems, the dynamic equation of the gantry crane driving mechanism is derived and it used PD(Proportional-Derivative) controller to control the lateral vibration. The simulation result of the driving mechanism using the Runge-Kutta method is presented in this paper.
