In this paper a fracture criterion is proposed for cracked cylindrical samples of high-strength prestressing steels of different yield strength. The surface crack is assumed to be semi-elliptical, a geometry very adequate to model sharp defects produced by any subcritical mechanism of cracking: mechanical fatigue, stress-corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement or corrosion fatigue. Two fracture criteria with different meanings are considered: a global (energetic) criterion based on the energy release rate G, and a local (stress) criterion based on the stress intensity factor $K_I$. The advantages and disadvantages of both criteria for engineering design are discussed in this paper on the basis of many experimental results of fracture tests on cracked wires of high-strength prestressing steels of different yield strength and with different degrees of strength anisotropy.
The larger trends related to cracking in ocean going vessels (primarily tankers and bulk carriers) are reviewed on the basis of available data. The typical interrelated causes of such cracking are: high local stresses, extensive use of higher strength steels, inadequate treatment of dynamic loads, adverse operational factors (harsh weather, improper vessel handling), and controllable structural degradation (corrosion, wear, stevedore damage). Three consequences of cracking are then discussed: structural failure, pollution, and increased maintenance. The first two, while rare, are potentially of high consequence including loss of life. The types of solutions that can be employed to improve the durability of ships in the face of fatigue cracking are then presented. For existing vessels, these solutions range from repairs based on structural analysis or service experience, control of corrosion, and enhanced surveys. For new vessels, the use of advanced design procedures that specifically address dynamic loads and fatigue cracking is necessary. As the preferred solution to the problem of cracking in ships, this paper advocates prevention by explicit design by first principles.
The concrete cracking from the restrained stress caused by the shrinkage may play significant cause of deterioration of concrete structures by allowing the permeation of sulphate and chloride ions which in turn triggers corrosion of steel reinforcement. In particular, the cracking becomes more critical as water binder ratio (W/B) is reduced and concrete strength increases. Therefore, it needs to evaluate correctly the comprehensive shrinkage behavior of concrete with high strength: high-strength concrete (HSC), ultra-highstrength concrete (UHSC). The unrestrained shrinkage tests, however, cannot estimate the net shrinkage effectively which affects cracking after full development of strength and stiffness because it does not consider the degree of restraint, strength development, stress relaxation, and so on. Therefore, in this study, both free and restrained shrinkage tests with variables of W/B (W/B of 30, 25 and 16%) and admixtures (fly ash (FA) and granulated blast-furnace slag (BFS)) for HSC, very-high-strength concrete (VHSC) and UHSC were performed. The test results indicated that the autogenous shrinkage and total shrinkage at drying condition were reduced as W/B increased and FA, BFS were added, and the cracking behavior was suppressed as W/B increased and FA was added.

The objective of this study is an understanding of stress corrosion cracking of metals that is recognized to mostly limit the lifetime of the structural materials by comparing the features of delayed hydride cracking of zirconium alloys with those of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of Ni-based alloys and hydrogen cracking of stainless steels. To this end, we investigated a dependence of delayed hydride cracking (DHC) velocity on the applied stress intensity factor and yield strength, and correlated a temperature dependence of the striation spacing and the DHC velocity. We reviewed a similarity of the features between the DHC of zirconium alloys, the SCC of Ni-based alloys and turbine rotor steels, and the hydrogen cracking of stainless steels and discussed the SCC phenomenon in metals with our DHC mode.
Reinforcement corrosion can cause serious safety deterioration to aging concrete structures exposed in aggressive environments. This paper presents an approach for reliability analyses of deteriorating reinforced concrete structures affected by reinforcement corrosion on the basis of the representative symptoms identified during the deterioration process. The concrete cracking growth and rebar bond strength evolution due to reinforcement corrosion are chosen as key symptoms for the performance deterioration of concrete structures. The crack width at concrete cover surface largely depends on the corrosion penetration of rebar due to the expansive rust layer at the bond interface generated by reinforcement corrosion. The bond strength of rebar in the concrete correlates well with concrete crack width and decays steadily with crack width growth. The estimates of cracking development and bond strength deterioration are examined by experimental data available from various sources, and then matched with symptom-based lifetime Weibull model. The symptom reliability and remaining useful life are predicted from the predictive lifetime Weibull model for deteriorating concrete structures. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach for forecasting the performance of concrete structures subject to reinforcement corrosion. The results show that the corrosion rate has significant impact on the reliability associated with serviceability and load bearing capacity of reinforced concrete structures during their service life.
This paper investigates the parameters that control the design of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete flexural members proportioned following the ACI 440.1R-06. It investigates the critical parameters that control the flexural design, such as the deflection limits, crack limits, flexural capacity, concrete compressive strength, beam span and cross section, and bar diameter, at various Mean-Ambient Temperatures (MAT). The results of this research suggest that the deflection and cracking requirements are the two most controlling limits for FRP reinforced concrete flexural members.

In this panel test, the toughness and post-cracking tensile strength of SFRC(Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete) measured on 24 panels(size; 60cm $\times$ 60cm $\times$ 10cm) which are the basic characteristics than can determine the load bearing capacity of SFRC are investigated. Those values are calculated using load-deflection curves and load-absorbed energy curves. Post-cracking tensile strength of SFRC in this study are determined by yield line theory. From the test results, it is seen that the higher the volume of steel fiber is, the higher the absorbed energy is.

This study is aimed for manufacturing a High performance Concrete(HPC) Pile as using steel fibers, investigation the mechanical properties of HPC Pile and proposition the potential application. At this study. We found that mechanical properties(cracking moment and fracture moment) of Pretensioned spun High strength Concrete (PHC) Pile using steel fibers is much superior to without steel fibers. Therefore. we think that using steel fibers in Concrete Pile is to progress flexural strength energy absorption capacity and post-cracking resistance.

In this paper, experimental studies are performed to find out properties of crack according to the change of curing conditions of flyash concrete. To study the effect of curing conditions on flyash concrete, slump, bleeding, air content and hydration temperature of fresh concrete are measured according to various curing conditions. In addition, the effect of caring conditions on compressive strength, tensile strength and Plastic drying shrinkage cracking of hardened concrete is also considered.
The cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures is generally evaluated by measuring a single parameter (i.e., Tensile strength, Stiffness). However, the use of a single parameter has been questioned in the evaluation of asphalt mixture cracking performance. The focus of this study was to clearly identify the key properties and characteristics associated with the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Results of fracture, creep, and strength tests at multiple loading rates performed on the modified and unmodified mixtures showed that the mixture cracking resistance was primarily affected by the rate of micro-damage accumulation. This was reflected in the m-value, without affecting the fracture energy limit. It was also observed that the short loading time (elastic) stiffness alone could not differentiate the mixture cracking resistance of the mixtures. It was concluded that the key to characterize the cracking resistance of asphalt mixture is in the evaluation of the combined effects of creep and failure limits. It was also found that a residual dissipated energy parameter measured from Superpave IDT strength test gave the quick and useful way to distinguish the difference of cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Failure strain in the longer-term creep test appeared to be a useful parameter for evaluating the combined effects of creep and failure limits of asphalt mixtures.
