In this paper, a general method for the automatic search for Strut-and-Tie (S&T) models representative of possible resistant mechanisms in reinforced concrete elements is proposed. The representativeness criterion here adopted is inspired to the principle of minimum strain energy and requires the consistency of the model with a reference stress field. In particular, a highly indeterminate pin-jointed framework of a given layout is generated within the assigned geometry of the concrete element and an optimum truss is found by the minimisation of a suitable objective function. Such a function allows us to search the optimum truss according to a reference stress field deduced through a F.E.A. and assumed as representative of the given continuum. The theoretical principles and the mathematical formulation of the method are firstly explained; the search for a S&T model suitable for the design of a deep beam shows the method capability in handling the reference stress path. Finally, since the analysis may consider the structure as linear-elastic or cracked and non-linear in both the component materials, it is shown how the proposed procedure allows us to verify the possibilities of activation of the design model, oriented to the serviceability condition and deduced in the linear elastic field, by following the evolution of the resistant mechanisms in the cracked non-linear field up to the structural failure.

This paper presents the shear strengthening effect of externally post-tensioning (EPT) method using high-strength steel rod in pre-cracked reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Three- and four-point bending tests were performed on a total of 8 specimens by adjusting the strengthening depths in the deviator position of EPT. The effective strengthening depths were 435, 535, and 610 mm. The pre-loading up to about 2/3 of ultimate load capacity measured in unstrengthened RC beam were applied in the beam to be post-tensioned. The EPT method was then applied to the pre-damaged RC beams and re-loading was added until the end of the test. EPT restored deflections of 3 mm or more, which account for about 40% of deflection when the pre-loading was applied. The shear strengthening increases more than 3 times and 36~107% in terms of the stiffness and load-carrying capacity compared to unstrengthening RC beams. The increased load-carrying capacities of the post-tensioned beam with strengthening depths of 435 and 535 mm are almost the same as 36~61%, and those of 610 mm are 84~107%, which shows the greatest shear strengthening effect.

Under sustained loads, the deformation of a structure gradually increase with time and eventually may be much greater than its instantaneous value, This inelastic and time-dependent deformation causes increase in deflection and curvature, redistribution of stress and internal action, In this paper, time-dependent analysis with creep and shrinkage of uncracked and cracked partially prestressed concrete flexural members is presented.

The concrete structures in Metropolitan city are usually exposed to carbonation and corrosion of embedded steel occurs due to the carbonation. In inspection and diagnosis of concrete structures, carbonation depth in sound concrete is mainly evaluated and service life for concrete structure is predicted based on the result. Generally, however, mass concrete structures such as columns have construction joint for suitable placing and also have cracks in early-age. In this study, carbonation depth in RC columns used for 20 years in metropolitan city is evaluated and also analyzed by considering the local conditions like sound, cracked, and joint area. The carbonation depth in cracked and joint area is more rapid than that in sound area, and it is thought to be more desirable to consider this effect in concrete structures with small cover depth. Furthermore, the technique for carbonation prediction in cracked concrete is derived in terms of crack width and the results from this technique are verified by comparing those from previous research.

Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams with openings by using aramid fiber reinforcement polymers (AFRP) on the beams' surfaces offers a useful solution for upgrading concrete structures to carry heavy loads. This paper presents a repairing technique of the AFRP sheets that effectively strengthens RC beams, controls both the failure modes and the stress distribution around the beam chords and enhances the serviceability (deflection produced under working loads be sufficiently small and cracking be controlled) of pre-cracked RC beams with openings. To investigate the possible damage that was caused by the service load and to simulate the structure behavior in the site, a comprehensive experimental study was performed. Two unstrengthened control beams, four beams that were pre-cracked before the application of the AFRP sheets and one beam that was strengthened without pre-cracking were tested. Cracking was first induced, followed by repair using various orientations of AFRP sheets, and then the beams were tested to failure. This load was kept constant during the strengthening process. The results show that both the preexisting damage level and the FRP orientation have a significant effect on strengthening effectiveness and failure mode. All of the strengthened specimens exhibited higher capacities with capacity enhancements ranging from 21.8 to 66.4%, and the crack width reduced by 25.6-82.7% at failure load compared to the control beam. Finally, the authors present a comparison between the experimental results and the predictions using the ACI 440.2R-08 guidelines.

Recently, based on the smart structure concept, optical fiber sensors have been increasingly applied to monitor the various engineering and civil structural components. Repairs based on adhesively bonded fiber reinforce composite patches are more structurally efficient and much less damaging to the parent structure than standard repairs based on mechanically fastened metallic patches. As a result of the high reinforcing efficiency of bonded patches fatigue cracks can be successfully repaired. However, when such repairs are applied to primary structures, it is needed to demonstrate that its loss can be immediately detected. This approach is based on the "smart patch" concept in which the patch system monitors its own health. The objective of this study is to evaluate the potentiality of application of transmission-type extrinsic Fabry-Perot optical fiber sensor (TEFPI) to the monitoring of crack growth behavior of composite patch repaired structures. The sensing system of TEFPI and the data reduction principle for the detection of crack detection are presented. Finally, experimental results from the tests of center-cracked-tension aluminum specimens repaired with bonded composite patch is presented and discussed.

In order to evaluate the integrity of nuclear power plant components, the analysis based on fracture mechanics is crucial. For this purpose, finite element method is popularly used to obtain J-integral. However, it is time consuming to design the finite element model of a cracked structure. Also, the J-integral should be verified by alternative methods since it may differ depending on the calculation method. The objective of this paper is to develop a three-dimensional elastic-plastic J-integral analysis system which is named as EPAS program. The EPAS program consists of an automatic mesh generator for a through-wall crack and a surface crack, a solver based on ABAQUS program, and a J-integral calculation program which provides DI (Domain Integral) and EDI (Equivalent Domain Integral) based J-integral calculation. Using the EPAS program, an optimized finite element model for a cracked structure can be generated and corresponding J-integral can be obtained subsequently.

A comparison of Riveted and bonded repairs, bearing and net tension failures, and Al 6061-T6 plates is presented. The results are then compared with previous papers about bonded repairs on different patch materials and shapes. Aluminum alloys, including Al 6061-T6, have a face-centered-cubic crystal structure. Under normal circumstances, these types of crystal structures do not exhibit cleavage fractures even at very low temperatures. In aluminum-base structures, the cracked plate structures are frequently repaired using mechanical fasteners-either rivets of bolts- even though patch-bonding techniques are applied to repair and reinforce the structure. Static test results indicate that the riveted repairs are affected by the position of the rivers. When using the same size of patch, the bonded repair technique is stronger; the rate of elongation is also increased. Form FEM analysis, it is revealed the origin of patch debonding in patch-bonded structures is the edge of the patch along to the tensile strength.
Composite patch repair of cracked aircraft structures has been accepted as one of improving fatigue life and attaining better structural integrity. Analysis for the stress intensity factor at the skin/stiffener structure with inclined central crack repaired by composite stiffened panels are developed. A numerical investigation was conducted to characterize the fracture behavior and crack growth behavior. In order to investigate the crack growth direction, maximum tangential stress(MTS) criteria is used. The main objective of this research is the validation of the inclined crack patching design. In this paper, the reduction of stress intensity factors at the crack-tip and prediction of crack growth direction are determined to evaluate the effects of various non-dimensional design parameter including; composite patch thickness and stiffener distance. The research on cracked structure subjected to mixed mode loading is accomplished and it is evident that more work using different approaches is necessary.
Offshore platforms have to serve in harsh environments and hence are likely to be damaged due to wave induced fatigue and environmental corrosion. Welded tubular joints in offshore platforms are most vulnerable to fatigue damage. Such damages endanger the integrity of the structure. Therefore it is all the more essential to assess the capacity of damaged structure from the point of view of its safety. Eight internally ring stiffened fatigue damaged tubular joints with nominal chord and brace diameter of 324 mm and 219 mm respectively and thickness 12 mm and 8 mm respectively were tested under axial brace compression loading to evaluate the reserve capacity of the joints. These joints had earlier been tested under fatigue loading under corrosive environments of synthetic sea water and hence they have been cracked. The extent of the damage varied from 35 to 50 per cent. One stiffened joint was also tested under axial brace tension loading. The residual strength of fatigue damaged stiffened joint tested under tension loading was observed to be less than one fourth of that tested under compression loading. It was observed in this experimental investigation that in the damaged condition, the joints possessed an in-built load-transfer mechanism. A bi-linear stress-strain model was developed in this investigation to predict the reserve capacity of the joint. This model considered the strain hardening effect. Close agreement was observed between the experimental and predicted results. The paper presents in detail the experimental investigation and the development of the analytical model to predict the reserve capacity of internally ring stiffened joints.
