Fatigue Life Estimation of Cruciform Welded Joint Considering Interaction, Coalescence and Growth of Multi-crack (다균열 간섭, 합체, 성장이론을 고려한 십자형 필렛용접 이음부의 피로균열진전수명 평가)

  • Fatigue life of welded joints are governed by the propagation of multiple collinear surface cracks distributed randomly along weld bead. These cracks propagate in mutual interaction and coalescence of them. To estimate the fatigue life, the influences of above two mechanisms on the fatigue life should be taken into account. These two mechanisms appear through the stress intensity factors disturbed mutually. However, it is difficult to calculate the stress intensity factors of multiple surface cracks located in vicinity of weld toe. The stress intensity factors are calculated normally by using the Mk-factors, but such Mk-factors are very rare in literature. In this study, the Mk-factors were obtained from a parametric study on crack length and depth, in which a finite element method is used. A fatigue test for a cruciform welded joint was conducted. The fatigue life of the tested specimen was estimated through present method with the informations obtained from the test, e.g. the number, size and locations of the cracks. The estimated and measured fatigue life showed a good agreement.

Microfracture Mechanism and Fracture Properties of Ni-Mn-Ga-Fe Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys (Ni-Mn-Ga-Fe 강자성 형상기억합금의 미세파괴기구 및 파괴성질)

  • The fracture toughness improvement of Ni-Mn-Ga-Fe ferromagnetic shape memory alloys containing ductile particles was explained by direct observation of microfracture processes using an in situ loading stage installed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) chamber. The Ni-Mn-Ga-Fe alloys contained a considerable amount of ductile particles in the grains after the homogenization treatment at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$. ${\gamma}$ particles were coarsened and distributed homogeneously along {$\beta}$ grain boundaries as well as inside {$\beta}$ grains as the homogenization temperature increased. The in situ microfracture observation results indicated that ${\gamma}$ particles effectively acted as blocking sites of crack propagation, and provided stable crack growth that could be confirmed by the R-curve analysis. This increase in fracture resistance with increasing crack length improved overall fracture properties of the alloys containing ${\gamma}$ particles.

  • Most previous researches for the hybrid composite materials such as FRMLs(Al/AFRP, Al/GFRP) have evaluated the fatigue delamination behavior using the traditional fracture mechanism. However, most previous researches have not generally been firmed yet. Because delamination growth behavior in hybrid composite should be consider delamination growth rate, $dA_D$/da using the delamination shape factors, fs instead of traditional fracture mechanic parameters. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between delamination shape factor, fs and delamination growth rate, $dA_D$ . And a propose parameter on the delamination aspect ratio, b/a. The details of the study are as follow : 1) Relationship between crack length, a and delamination width,b. 2) Relationship between delamination aspect ration, b/a and delamination area rate,($(A_D)_{N}(A_D)_{ALL}$. 3) Variation of delamination growth rate, $dA_D/da$ was attendant on delamination shape factors, $fs_1$, $fs_2$, $fs_3$. The test results indicated the delamination growth rate depends on delamination shape factors.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to reduce of error for source location through acoustic emission(AE) signal, generated elastic wave from crack growth to leak for facility diagnosis. Especially, in order to overcome noise from original signal, this paper proposed enhancement of source location by using noise reduction based on wavelet transform. To evaluate actual performance in experiments, Pencil Lead Break is used crack signal source on the aluminum plate and drain valve of air compressor is used as substitute pressure vessel to generate leak signal. In signal processing, wavelet shrinkage and soft threshold are used to discriminate signal source and then source location techniques have been effectively used with group velocity using material property and time difference between sensor using cross correlation. Source location for crack and leak test have some difference, but the result show that improved 30% with a average length within 10.46mm in crack test and improved 2% compare with average filter in leak test when we applied wavelet transform.

  • Corrosion characteristics on the 12Cr alloy steel of turbine blade was electro-chemically investigated in 3.5wt% NaCI and 12.7wt% Na2S04 solution, respectively. Electro-chemical polarization test, Huey test and Oxalic acid etching test were previously conducted to estimate corrosion susceptibility of the material. And, using the horizontal corrosion fatigue tester, corrosion fatigue characteristics of 12Cr alloy steel in distilled water, 3.5wt% NaCI solution, and 12.7wt%(1M) Na2S04 solution were also fracture-mechanically estimated and compared their results. Parameter considered was room temperature, 60'C and 90'C. Corrosion fatigue crack length was measured by DC potential difference method.Obtained results are as follows,1) 12Cr alloy steel showed high corrosion rate in 3.5wt% NaCI solution and Na2S04 solution at high tempratue.2) Intergranular corrosion sensitivity of 12 Cr alloy was smaller than austenitic stainless steel.3) Corrosion fatigue crack growth rate in 3.5wt% NaCI and 12.7wt%(IM) Na2S04 solution is entirely higher than in the distilled water, and also increased with the temperature increase.

Safety Margin Improvement Against Failure of Zr-2.5Nb Pressure Tube (Zr-2.5Nb압력관 파손에 대한 안전여유도 개선)

  • This study is to assess the effects of increasing wall thickness on the safety margin of pressure tube in operating and of lowering initial hydrogen concentration on the DHC growth in respect to the improvement of the reliability of pressure tube in CANDU reactors. The pressure tube with thicker wall of 5.2 mm shows much higher safety margin for flaw tolerance by 25% than the current 4.2mmm tube. The thicker pressure tubes have a great benefit in LBB assessment including the initial crack depth at which DHC occurs, the crack length at onset of leaking and the available time for action. The resistance for the pressure tube ballooning at LOCA accident is also increased with the thicker tube. The calculations for Heq concentration after 20 years of operation as a function of wall thickness and initial hydrogen concentration show that the 5.2 mm nil thickness tube with 5 ppm initial hydrogen concentration is the most resistant to DHC. with the lower initial hydrogen concentration, TSS temperature for the precipitation or hydride decreases and the crack growth during cooldown reduces.

Development of Computational Evaluation Method for Fatigue Crack Growth Rate based on Viscoplastic-Damage Model (점소성-손상모델 기반 피로균열 진전속도 전산 평가법 개발)

  • In this paper, computational evaluation method for fatigue crack growth rate(FCGR) based on material viscoplastic-damage model is proposed. Viscoplastic-damage model expressing material constitutive behavior of 7% nickel steel is introduced and is implemented into commercial finite element analysis(FEA) code, ABAQUS, as a user defined material subroutine(UMAT) for application in the FEA environments. Verification of developed UMAT and material parameters of material model are carried out by uniaxial tensile test simulations of 7% nickel steel. Moreover, jump-in-cycles procedure and rearrangement of critical damage are employed and also implemented to the ABAQUS UMAT for fatigue damage analysis. Typical FCGR test results such as relationship between crack length and number of cycles and relationship between da/dN and ${\Delta}K$ could be obtained from FCGR test simulation using developed UMAT and these results are compared with experimental results in order to verify of proposed computational method.

  • Using the micro-pulling down method, $Nd_2O_3$ doped crack-free stoichiometric $LiNbO_3$ single crystals were grown in 1 mm diameter and 30∼35 mm length. The homogeneous distributions of $Nd_2O_3$ concentration were confirmed by the electron probe micro analysis. The absorption and photoluminescence spectra were measured with respect to the $Nd_2O_3$ doping.

Effect of normal load on the crack propagation from pre-existing joints using Particle Flow Code (PFC)

  • In this paper, the effect of normal load on the failure mechanism of echelon joint has been studied using PFC2D. In the first step, calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to the data obtained from experimental laboratory tests. Then, six different models consisting various echelon joint were prepared and tested under two low and high normal loads. Furthermore, validation of the simulated models were cross checked with the results of direct shear tests performed on non-persistent jointed physical models. The simulations demonstrated that failure patterns were mostly influenced by normal loading, while the shear strength was linked to failure mechanism. When ligament angle is less than $90^{\circ}$, the stable crack growth length is increased by increasing the normal loading. In this condition, fish eyes failure pattern occur in rock bridge. With higher ligament angles, the rock bridge was broken under high normal loading. Applying higher normal loading increases the number of fracture sets while dilation angle and mean orientations of fracture sets with respect to ligament direction will be decreased.

CO2 Laser Scribing Process of Soda Lime Glass (소다석회유리의 CO2 레이저 스크라이빙 가공)

  • This study reports the CW $CO_2$ laser scribing of soda lime glass. In this study, scribing experiments are carried out at different laser powers, scan speeds, and focal positions to investigate the effect of the process parameters on the interaction characteristics between a laser beam and glass. In particular, the interaction characteristics are analyzed and described with the input laser energy per unit length. According to the experimental results, the damage threshold for the glass surface was found to exist between 0.072 and 0.08 J/mm. The input laser energy in this region induced partial melting of the surface and grain-shaped cracks. These cracks tended to increase as the input laser energy increased. At the laser input energy larger than 1 J/mm, a huge crack propagating along the scan direction was produced, and the volume below the scribed area was fully melted. The growth of this crack finally resulted in the complete cutting of the glass at the input laser energy above 8 J/mm. It was found that both the width and depth of the scribed line increased with increasing input laser energy. For the beam focusing at the rear surface, the width of the scribed line varied irregularly. This could be ascribed to the increased asymmetry of the beam intensity distribution when the laser beam was focused at the rear surface. Under this condition, a large burr was only produced on one side of the scribed line.
