In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking of reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the cracked reinforcements lose carrying capacity. This paper deals with elastic stress distributions and load carrying capacity of intact and cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneities. Three dimensional finite element analysis has been carried out on intact and cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneities in an infinite body under uniaxial tension and pure shear. For the intact inhomogeneity, as well known as Eshelbys solution, the stress distribution is uniform in the inhomogeneity and nonuniform in the surrounding matrix. On the other hand, for the cracked inhomogeneity, the stress in the region near the crack surface is considerably released and the stress distribution becomes more complex. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity, and the difference between the average stresses of the intact and cracked inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The load carrying capacity of the cracked inhomogeneity is expressed in to cracking damage. The load carrying capacity of the cracked inhomogeneity is expressed in terms of the average stress of the intact inhomogeneity and some coefficients. It is found that a cracked inhomogeneity with high aspect ratio still maintains higher load carrying capacity.
In this study, 3D Meso-scale finite-element model is presented to study the mechanical behavior of steel microfiber-reinforced polymer concrete considering the random distribution of fibers in the matrix. The composite comprises two separate parts which are the polymer composite and steel microfibers. The polymer composite is assumed to be homogeneous, which its mechanical properties are measured by performing experimental tests. The steel microfiber-polymer bonding is simulated with the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) to offer more-realistic assumptions. The CZM parameters are obtained by calibrating the numerical model using the results of the experimental pullout tests on an individual microfiber. The accuracy of the results is validated by comparing the obtained results with the corresponding values attained from testing the steel microfiber-reinforced polymer concrete incorporating 0, 1 and 2% by volume of microfibers, which indicates the excellent accuracy of the current proposed model. The results show that the microfiber aspect ratio has a considerable effect on the mechanical properties of the reinforced polymer concrete. Applying microfibers with a higher aspect ratio improves the mechanical properties of the composite considerably especially when the first crack appears in the polymer concrete specimens.

In this study, an experimental study was conducted to analyze the hysteresis behavior according to the steel fiber aspect ratio and volume fraction of diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams under to cyclic loading. The aspect ratio and volume fraction of the steel fibers were set as the main variables, and 4 specimens were fabricated in which the amount of transverse reinforcement of the coupling beam suggested in the domestic building structural standard was relaxed by about 53%. In the experiment, cyclic loading experiments were performed in the displacement control method in accordance with ACI 374.2R-13, and as a result of the experiment, it was found that all specimens containing steel fibers exceeded the nominal shear strength suggested by the current structural standards. As the aspect ratio of the steel fibers increased, the steel fibers prevented the buckling of the diagonal reinforcement, and the bridging effect of the steel fibers held the crack surface of the concrete. The shear strength, stiffness reduction and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens containing steel fibers were superior to those of the Vf0 specimens without steel fibers. Therefore, it is judged that the steel fiber reinforced concrete can relieve the details of the transverse reinforced.

In this paper, we developed a new thick photoresist fabrication technology for 3-dimensional microstructures. In general, like as AZ photoresist was coated with thin film thickness about 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$, but photoresist like SU-8 has thickness of several tens $\mu\textrm{m}$ or more and high aspect ratio. When we fabricate a microstructure using the thick photoresist like SU-8, cracks on the SU-8 thick photoresist are appeared by stress which was caused by sudden cooling down during bake of the thick photoresist spun on wafer. Thus, it was hard to fabricate the microstructure using the thick photoresist for electroplating. In this paper, we developed a new process to produce a 3-dimensional microstructure without the crack by stress through a suitable thick photoresist coating, time control of cool down and time control of PEB (Post Expose Bake).

Using the fatigue limit (△σunsm) and residual stress (σr) of the UNSM smooth specimen, the harmless maximum crack depth (αhml) according to the crack aspect ratio (As) was evaluated. αhml evaluated the reliability in the relationship between the minimum crack depth (αNDI1, αNDI2) detectable by nondestructive inspection(NDI) and the crack depth (α25, α50) that reduces the fatigue limit by 25% and 50%. All αhml was determined by the crack depth. The αhml of 80N UNSM with high σr and high △σunsm was found to be large. σr in the depth direction had a much effect on αhml. Since αhml>α50(As=0.6-0.1) and αhml>α25, α25 and α50(some range) can secure the safety and reliability. Since αhml<α50 (As=1. 0-0. 6), it cannot be made harmless by UNSM. So safety and reliability cannot be secured. αNDI1 and αNDI2 are larger than α25, α25 cannot be detected by NDI. αNDI1 and αNDI2 are smaller than α50, α25 can detected by NDI.

A series of unreinforced masonry(URM) walls were analytically investigated by FEM for a limited version of seismic in-plane performance. For this, URM walls were assumed to be continum and modeled as isotropic plane stress elements, within which the nature of cracking was propogated. Accordingly, behavioral mode of cracking in URM was modeled by smeared-crack approach. Total of 70 cases were considered for various parameters such as axial load ratio, aspect ratio and effective section area ratio due to the existence of opening, etc. The analysis results indicate that these parameters significantly and interactively influence over the ultimate strength of URM walls. Finally, it is suggested that the response modification factor for URM adopted in the current Korean Standard should be validated considering various forms of brittleness and probable failure modes in URM.
A probabilistic micromechanical framework is proposed to quantify numerically the self-healing capabilities of polymers containing microcapsules. A two-step self-healing process is designed in this study: A probabilistic micromechanical framework based on the ensemble volume-averaging method is derived for the polymers, and a hitting probability model combined with a crack nucleation model is then utilized for encountering microcapsules and microcracks. Using this framework, a series of parametric investigations are performed to examine the influence of various model parameters (e.g., the volume fraction of microcapsules, microcapsule radius, radius ratio of microcracks to microcapsules, microcrack aspect ratio, and scale parameter) on the self-healing capabilities of the polymers. The proposed framework is also implemented into a finite element code to solve the self-healing behavior of tapered double cantilever beam specimens.

To investigate relevance of the definition of the reference stress to estimate J and $C^{*}$ for surface crack problems, this paper compares FE J and $C^{*}$ results for surface cracked pipes with those estimated according to the reference stress approach using various definitions of the reference stress. Pipes with part circumferential inner surface crack and finite internal axial crack are considered, subject to internal pressure and global bending. The crack depth and aspect ratio are systematically varied. The reference stress is defined in four different ways using (i) the local limit load, (ii) the global limit load, (iii) the global limit load determined from the FE limit analysis, and (iv) the optimized reference load. It is found that the reference stress based on the local limit load gives overall excessively conservative estimates of J and $^{*}$. Use of the global limit load clearly reduces the conservatism, compared to that of the local limit load, although it can provide sometimes non-conservative estimates of J and $^{*}$. The use of the FE global limit load gives overall non-conservative estimates of J and $^{*}$. The reference stress based on the optimised reference load gives overall accurate estimates of J and $^{*}$, compared to other definitions of the reference stress. Based on the present finding, general guidance on the choice of the reference stress for surface crack problems is given.

Corrosion fatigue test was performed by the use of plane bending fatigue tester in marine environment having various specific resistance from 25(natural sea water) to 5000.ohm.cm. It is in order to investigate the effects of marine environmental factor on the corrosion fatigue fracture of SS41 steel. The main results obtained are as follows; 1. The aspect ratio(b/a) of corner crack growing in natural sea water is lower than that in air. 2. The surface crack growth rate(da/dN) in marine environment is faster than that in air and da/dN delaies with the specific resistance increased. 3. The experimental constant m of paris rule [da/dN=C(${\delta}$K)$^m$] decrease with the specific resistance decreased and the effect of corrosion in proportion to the specific resistance is more sensitive than that of stress intensity factor range(${\delta}$K) under region II. 4. The accelerative factor(${\alpha}$) in marine environment is about 1.1-2.7 and .alpha. is increase under the low region of stress intensity factor range(${\delta}$K). 5. The electrode potential($E_0$) gets less noble potential with the specific resistance decreased.

The investigation of delamination growth behavior in hybrid composite material such as FRMLs should be considered delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$ using the delamination shape factor, $f_S$ instead of traditional fracture mechanics parameters. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between delamination element (i. e. delamination width, b, delamination contour, c, delamination shape factor, $f_S$ and delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$) and delamination growth in FRMLs under cyclic bending moment. The delamination shape formed along the fatigue crack between aluminum layer and glass fiber/epoxy layer are measured by scanning method. The details of study are as follow : ⅰ) Relationship between crack length, a and delamination width, b. ⅱ) Variation of delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$ was attendant on delamination shape factors, $f_{S1}$, $f_{S2}$, $f_{S3}$. The test result indicated the delamination growth behavior depends in delamination element such as delamination width, b, delamination shape factors, $f_{S1}$, $f_{S2}$, $f_{S3}$.
