This study was carried out to estimate the possibility on the removal of phenols and anilines, which were contained in pulp or dye waste water, and the reusability of plant materials, shepherd's purse and turnip. Most of phenols catalyzed with shepherd's purse were removed more than 90% in the presence of $H_2O_2$, and the removal was ranged from 53.1% for 2,6-DMP to more than 99% for 2,4,6-TCP when turnip was used as catalysts. The removal of anilines catalyzed with shepherd's purse was ranged from 42.2% for 2-CA to 78.7% for 3,4-DCA in the presence of $H_2O_2$, and in case of turnip, from 31.5% for 2-CA to 90.0 % for 2,4-DCA. The reuse of plant materials was proved to be possible for not only the batch method but also the continuous method. No decreasing removal was observed during 30 cycles in waster water contaminated with 100ppm of 2,4-DCP. However, it was observed that the removal was decreased with increasing the number of cycles in higher concentration of 2,4-DCP(800ppm). Therefore, it could be suggested that the number of reusable cycles depends on the initial concentration of substrates.
The methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorpha has been extensively studied as a model organism for methanol metabolism and peroxisome biogenesis. Recently, this yeast has also attracted attention as a promising host organism for recombinant protein production. Here, we describe the fabrication and evaluation of a DNA chip spotted with 382 open reading frames (ORFs) of H. polymorpha. Each ORF was PCR-amplified using gene-specific primer sets, of which the forward primers had 5'-aminolink. The PCR products were printed in duplicate onto the aldehyde-coated slide glasses to link only the coding strands to the surface of the slide via covalent coupling between amine and aldehyde groups. With the partial genome DNA chip, we compared efficiency of direct and indirect cDNA target labeling methods, and found that the indirect method, using fluorescent-labeled dendrimers, generated a higher hybridization signal-to-noise ratio than the direct method, using cDNA targets labeled by incorporation of fluorescence-labeled nucIeotides during reverse transcription. In addition, to assess the quality of this DNA chip, we analyzed the expression profiles of H. polymorpha cells grown on different carbon sources, such as glucose and methanol, and also those of cells treated with the superoxidegenerating drug, menadione. The profiles obtained showed a high-level induction of a set of ORFs involved in methanol metabolism and oxidative stress response in the presence of methanol and menadione, respectively. The results demonstrate the sensitivity and reliability of our arrays to analyze global gene expression changes of H. polymorpha under defined environmental conditions.
Limit equilibrium methods of slope stability analysis have been widely adopted mainly due to their simplicity and applicability. However, the conventional methods may not give reliable and convincing results for various geological conditions such as nonhomogeneous and anisotropic soils. Also, they do not take into account soil slope history nor the initial state of stress, for example excavation or fill placement. In contrast to the limit equilibrium analysis, the analysis of deformation and stress distribution by finite element method can deal with the complex loading sequence and the growth of inelastic zone with time. This paper proposes a technique to determine the critical slip surface as well as to calculate the factor of safety for shallow failure on partially saturated soil slope. Based on the effective stress field in finite element analysis, all stresses are estimated at each Gaussian point of elements. The search strategy for a noncircular critical slip surface along weak points is appropriate for rainfall-induced shallow slope failure. The change of unit weight by seepage force has an effect on the horizontal and vertical displacements on the soil slope. The Drucker-Prager failure criterion was adopted for stress-strain relation to calculate coupling hydraulic and mechanical behavior of the partially saturated soil slope.

The effects of inner liquid sloshing on vessel motions are a well-known factor. It was investigated experimentally and numerically. In this regard, the study of many efforts to reduce natural phenomena of vessel motions by adopting special devices especially for roll motions. Among many devices, inserting baffles in the inner liquid tank is very common. In this study, one investigated the vessel motions with inner sloshing tanks with baffles inside. For the numerical simulation, one employed a dynamically coupled program between boundary-element-method-based vessel motion analysis program and a particle-based computational fluid dynamics program. Comparing corresponding experimental results validated the dynamically coupled program. The validated coupled program was used to simulate vessel motions, including sloshing effects with various lengths of inner baffles. The simulation results show that not only the filling ratio of inner liquid, but also the length of clearance due to baffles influenced the vessel motions. The significant point of this study was that the natural frequency of vessel motions can be maintained irrespective of the amount of filling ratio through adjustment of the clearance. In a future study, the effects of various numbers of baffles with various clearances would be conducted to percuss the possibility of vessel motion control with inner liquid sloshing effects.

The spectrophotometric determination of trace selenium(Ⅳ) using its catalytic reaction has been studied in aqueous solutions. The catalytic reaction of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride with selenium(Ⅳ) in an acidic aqueous medium produces benzenediazonium ion which will be converted into a red-coloured azo dye by coupling with H-acid(8-amino-1-naphtol-3,6-disulfonic acid disodium salt). For the reaction, the experimental conditions such as amounts of the reagents and pH of the sample solutions were optimized. After 15 ml of the sample solution was treated with 1 ml of 0.1 M EDTA solution to mask $Fe^{3+}$, etc., 1 ml of 0.06 M phenylhydrazine hydrochloride, 1 ml of 0.02 M H-acid, and 3 ml of 0.3 M-$KClO_3$ were added into the solution, sequentially. The solution was adjusted to pH 1.4 with HCl. After it was heated in a steam bath for 30 minutes, the solution was cooled down to a room temperature and then diluted to 25 ml with deionized distilled water. A blank solution for the absorbance measurement was prepared from the deionized water. The absorbance was measured at 527 nm. Using the above procedure, the trace amount of selenium was determined in natural waters such as tap, river and pond waters by a standard curve method and recoveries of Se spiked to samples were also obtained. From the recoveries of 104 to 111%, it could be concluded that this method was applicable to the quantitative determination of ng/ml level of selenium in natural waters.

This is the study of magnetic properties of transition metal doped diluted magnetic semiconductors(DMSs). The wurtzite structure samples were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The thermodynamic characteristics and magnetic properties of $Zn_{1-x}Co_xO$ single phase was investigated for different doping concentration (x = 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 10%, 15%). The property of diluted magnetic semiconductors has been comfirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) and Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The magnetic properties of pure $Zn_{1-x}Co_xO$ is found to be dominated by the ferromagnetic interaction between doped transition metal ions, where by the ferromagnetic coupling strength is simply increased with the concentration(>5%) of the doped transition metal.

The most commonly used numerical modelling techniques for acoustics and vibration are based on element based techniques, such as the nite element and boundary element method. Due to the huge computational eorts involved, the use of these deterministic techniques is practically restricted to low-frequency applications. For high-frequency modelling, probabilistic techniques such as SEA are well established. However, there is still a wide mid-frequency range, for which no adequate and mature prediction techniques are available. In this frequency range, the computational eorts of conventional element based techniques become prohibitively large, while the basic assumptions of the probabilistic techniques are not yet valid. In recent years, a vast amount of research has been initiated in a quest for an adequate solution for the current midfrequency problem. One family of research methods focuses on novel deterministic approaches with an enhanced convergence rate and computational eciency compared to the conventional element based methods in order to shift the practical frequency limitation towards the mid-frequency range. Amongst those techniques, a wave based prediction technique using an indirect Tretz approach is being developed at the K.U.Leuven - Noise and Vibration Research group. This paper starts with an outline of the major features of the mid-frequency modelling challenge and provides a short overview of the current research activities in response to this challenge. Next, the basic concepts of the wave based technique and its hybrid coupling with nite element schemes are described. Various validations on two- and threedimensional acoustic, elastic, poro-elastic and vibro-acoustic examples are given to illustrate the potential of the method and its benecial performance as compared to conventional element based methods. A closing part shares some views on the open issues and future research directions.

Recently, governmental authority and local government are looking for a method of utilizing location information of smart phone for urgent rescue in fire and kidnap situation. Under this background, in this study, a method of rapidly collecting, constructing location determination based Wi-Fi AP data utilizing location information of smart phone and mobile mapping system was suggested in order to construct precise positioning information that could be utilized under urgent situation. By performing compensation work for GPS/INS/DMI through collected outcome, position of collected vehicle was acquired. In addition, source data integrating Wi-Fi information and collected position by coupling based on Wi-Fi AP collector and GPS time was constructed and Wi-Fi radiomap was constructed by removing Wi-Fi signal noise that reduces precise position performance. As a result of performing location determination performance assess ment by selecting 10 test positions by each local government, result value of 25.46cm for total local government average and 27.76m for SD could be obtained. It is considered that this result could be utilized as a technology of being able to supplement or substituting GPS location determination technology that is impossible in plocation determination of mobile communication company's base station (200m~2km) and indoor being used at present.

The braking system is one of the most important components in vehicles and machines. It must exert a reliable braking force when they are brought to a halt. Generally, frictional heat is generated by converting kinetic energy into heat energy through friction. As the kinetic energy is converted into heat energy, high temperature heat is generated which affects the mechanical behavior of the braking system. Frictional heat affects the thermal expansion and friction coefficient of the brake system. If the temperature is not controlled, the brake performance will be decreased. Therefore, it is important to predict and control the heat generation of the brake. Various numerical analysis studies have been carried out to predict the frictional heat, but they assumed the existence of boundary conditions in the numerical analysis to simulate the frictional heat, because the simulation of frictional heat is difficult and time consuming. The results were based on the assumption that the frictional heat is different from the actual temperature distribution in a rotating brake system. Therefore, the reliability of the cooling effect or thermal stress using the results of these studies is insufficient. In order to overcome these limitations and establish a simulation procedure to predict the frictional heat, this study directly simulates the frictional heat generation by using a thermal-structure coupling element. In this study, we analyzed the thermo-mechanical behavior of a brake model, in order to investigate the thermal characteristics of brake systems by using the Finite Element method (FEM). This study suggests the necessity to directly simulate the frictional heating and it is hoped that it can provide the necessary information for simulations.
The implantable middle ear hearing devices(IMEHDs) have been developed to overcome the conventional hearing aid's problem(ringing effect caused by the acoustic feedback, cosmetic problem, etc.). In the IMEHDs, the vibrating transducer is a key component because its vibration enables to hear for hearing impaired people. The vibrating transducer is implanted on ossicular chain by surgical operation. The coupling status between implanted transducer and ossicular chain has an effect on delivering vibrating force from transducer to stapes. Noninvasive method is required to investigate the output characteristics of IMEHDs after implementation. Recently, emitted sound pressure measuring method of tympanic membrane is proposed to investigate the output characteristics of IMEHDs. However, the relationship between displacement of stapes and sound pressure by tympanic membrane was not cleared. In this paper, displacement of stapes and sound pressure by tympanic membrane were measured using the differential floating mass transducer(DFMT) that implanted on the ossicular chain of the human temporal bone and physical ear model. Through the experiments results, the relationship between displacement of stapes and sound pressure by tympanic membrane was investigated.
