We report strong exciton transition and exciton-phonon couplings in photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO thin films grown on MgO/sapphire (buffer/substrate) by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The PL spectra at 10 K showed the intensity of the dominant emission, donor-bound exciton transition of front surface (top surface, the latter part in growth) is found to be about 100 times higher than that of back surface (in-depth bottom area, the initial part), while the room temperature PL spectra showed dominant contributions from the free exciton emissions and phonon-replicas of free excitons for front surface and back surface, respectively, It could be attributed to the strong contributions of exciton-phonon coupling. Time resolved PL spectra reveal that the life time of exciton recombination from the front surface are longer than those from back surface. This is most probably due to the fact that reduction of non-radiative recombination in the front surface. This investigation indicates that the existence of native defects or trap centers which can be reduced by the proper initial condition in growth and the exciton-phonon interaction couplings play an important role in optical properties and crystal quality of ZnO thin films.
Putting emphasis on the effect of existence of porosity in the functionally graded materials (FGMs) on the dynamic responses of waves scattered in FG nanobeams resulted in implementation of a novel porosity-based homogenization method for FGMs and show its applicability in a wave propagation problem in the presence of axial pre-load for the first time. In the employed porosity-dependent method, the coupling between density and Young's moduli is included to consider for the effective moduli of the FG nanobeam by the means of a more reliable homogenization technique. The beam-type element will be modeled via the classical theory of beams, namely Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Also, the dynamic form of the principle of virtual work will be extended for such nanobeams to derive the motion equations. Applying the nonlocal constitutive equations of Eringen on the obtained motion equations will be resulted in derivation of the nanobeam's governing equations. Depicted results reveal that the dispersion responses of FG nanobeams will be decreased as the porosity volume fraction is increased which must be noticed by the designers of advanced nanosize devices who are interested in employment of wave dispersion approach in continuous systems for specific goals.

This paper presents the free vibration analysis of damaged beams by means of 1D (beam) advanced finite element models. The present 1D formulation stems from the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), and it leads to a Component-Wise (CW) modelling. By means of the CUF, any order 2D and 1D structural models can be developed in a unified and hierarchical manner, and they provide extremely accurate results with very low computational costs. The computational cost reduction in terms of total amount of DOFs ranges from 10 to 100 times less than shell and solid models, respectively. The CW provides a detailed physical description of the real structure since each component can be modelled with its material characteristics, that is, no homogenization techniques are required. Furthermore, although 1D models are exploited, the problem unknown variables can be placed on the physical surfaces of the real 3D model. No artificial surfaces or lines have to be defined to build the structural model. Global and local damages are introduced by decreasing the stiffness properties of the material in the damaged regions. The results show that the proposed 1D models can deal with damaged structures as accurately as a shell or a solid model, but with far lower computational costs. Furthermore, it is shown how the presence of damages can lead to shell-like modal shapes and torsional/bending coupling.
An accurate and highly efficient inverse element labelled iPCB is developed based on the inverse finite element method (iFEM) for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures (such as arch bridges) utilizing onboard strain data. This inverse problem, named shape sensing, is vital for the design of smart structures and structural health monitoring (SHM) procedures. The iPCB formulation is defined based on a least-squares variational principle that employs curved Timoshenko beam theory as its baseline. The accurate strain-displacement relationship considering tension-bending coupling is used to establish theoretical and measured section strains. The displacement fields of the isoparametric element iPCB are interpolated utilizing nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) basis functions, enabling exact geometric modelling even with a very coarse mesh density. The present formulation is completely free from membrane and shear locking. Numerical validation examples for different curved structures subjected to different loading conditions have been performed and have demonstrated the excellent prediction capability of iPCBs. The present formulation has also been shown to be practical and robust since relatively accurate predictions can be obtained even omitting the shear deformation contributions and considering polluted strain measures. The current element offers a promising tool for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures.
The silane coupling agent, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (${\gamma}$-MPTS), was grafted on the surface of alumina nanoparticles. We used the surface modified nanoparticles in the hard coating layer for in-mold decoration (IMD) foils and evaluated the coating properties such as hardness and anti-abrasion property. The effects of electron beam (EB) irradiation on color layer and anchor layer of IMD foils were observed through the difference in color and the cross-cut tape test, respectively. Also, cure kinetics as studied quantitatively under various reaction temperatures by analysis of surface properties and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. From these results, we constructed database for the commercial exploitation of EB curing system.
A post-tensioned slab bridge is analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. Both the geometry and the material of the cross section of the slab are considered symmetrical with respect to the mid-surface so that the bending extension coupling stiffness, $B_{ij}=0$, and $D_{16}=D_{26}=0$. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of rule of mixture. This bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical and axial loads. In this paper, the finite difference method and the beam theory are used for analysis. The result of beam analysis is modified to obtain the solution of the plate analysis. The result of this paper can be used for post-tensioned slab bridge analysis by the engineers with undergraduate study in near future.
The aeroelastic stability analysis of composite bearingless rotors is investigated using a large deflection beam theory in hover. The bearingless rotor configuration consists of a single flexbeam with a wrap-around type torque tube and the pitch links located at the leading edge and trailing edge of the torque tube. The outboard main blade, flexbeam and torque tube are all assumed to be an elastic beam undergoing flap bending, lead-lag bending, elastic twist and axial deflections, which are discretized into beam finite elements. For the analysis of composite bearingless rotors, flexbeam is assumed to be a rectangular section made of laminate. Two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory is used for aerodynamic computation. The finite element equations of motion for beams are obtained from Hamilton's principle. The p-k method is used to determine aeroelastic stability boundary. Numerical results are presented for selected bearingless rotor configurations based on the lay-up of laminae in the flexbeam and pitch links location. A systematic study is made to identify the importance of the stiffness coupling terms on aeroelastic stability for various fiber orientation and for different configuration.

In this article, we propose a near field microwave scanning probe structure in which two short conducting rods are attached to the center of the ridged(H-type) aperture, thereby reducing significantly the beam spot area while maintaining the high transmission efficiency through the output coupling H-type(ridged) aperture. Here the two short parallel conducting rods seem to play an important role of concentrating the transmitted electromagnetic energy through the H-type aperture and so reducing the beam area for high resolution. For validation of the proposed theory, the near field waveguide probe is fabricated according to the simulated results and its return loss characteristics versus frequencies are measured. The comparison between theory and experiment is seen to be in good agreements.

In this paper, the frequency sharing issue between cellular time division duplex-orthogonal frequency division multiple access (TDD-OFDMA) Systems and terrestrial Fixed Systems has been studied. The conventional advanced minimum coupling loss (A-MCL) includes only the formulation to calculate the interference from one interfering system. Therefore, A-MCL must be modified to assess the aggregated interference from base stations(BS) and mobile stations(MS). By applying the modified model, the coexistence analysis are done according to the average number of MS per sector, BS-to-BS distance, and the main beam direction of the terrestrial fixed system. In the case of 20 MS per sector, the BS-to-BS distance and the minimum distance between a terrestrial fixed system and BS are 5.8 km and 2.5 km, respectively. It is about 25dB that the difference between maximum and minimum interference signal power which varies with the main beam direction of the terrestrial fixed system. Moreover, for 40% of the main beam direction of the terrestrial fixed system, interference signal power is less than the maximum permissible interference.

Recently, in newly constructed apartment buildings, the exterior wall structures have been characterized by thinness, having various openings, and a significantly low reinforcement ratio. In this study, a nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to investigate the crack damage characteristics of the exterior wall structure. The limited analysis models for a 10-story exterior wall were constructed based on the prototype apartment building, and nonlinear static analysis (push-over analysis) was performed. Based on the finite element (FE) analysis model, the parametric study was conducted to investigate the effects of various design parameters on the strength and crack width of the exterior walls. As the parameters, the vertical reinforcement ratio and horizontal reinforcement ratio of the wall, as well as the uniformly distributed longitudinal reinforcement ratio and shear reinforcement ratio of the connection beam, were addressed. The analysis results showed that the strength and deformation capacity of the prototype exterior walls were limited by the failure of the connection beam prior to the flexural yielding of the walls. Thus, the increase of wall reinforcement limitedly affected the failure modes, peak strengths, and crack damages. On the other hand, when the reinforcement ratio of the connection beams was increased, the peak strength was increased due to the increase in the load-carrying capacity of the connection beams. Further, the crack damage index decreased as the reinforcement ratio of the connection beam increased. In particular, it was more effective to increase the uniformly distributed longitudinal reinforcement ratio in the connection beams to decrease the crack damage of the coupling beams, regardless of the type of the prototype exterior walls.
